    Rob's Soapbox - Leadership Versus Coaching Jan 30, 2022
    Show notes

Some leaders are great coaches, but certainly not all. Many coaches are great leaders, but too many aren’t. The thing most people don’t realize is how different the two are and how rare it is to find someone who is both.

Just to confuse things even further, might I point out that sometimes the best coaches are the best leaders by recognizing that they don’t need to do any coaching.

For example, take the high school baseball coach who is blessed to have a clear and obvious major league prospect pitcher on his team. A great coach will leave that player alone entirely and recognize that all the pitcher needs to do is throw more…on his own, left to his own devices. The player will learn as he goes, on his own, and doesn’t need to be told how to do things because he’s already better than the coach ever was, will, or could be…just let the pitcher pitch. Meanwhile, that same coach, if he’s truly a great one, will work intensely with his three “worst” pitchers…and if he’s really smart, he’ll tell them to watch what that major league prospect does and try as best they can to emulate it. That’s not just great coaching, that’s leadership.

A lot of amateur golfers decide, after learning the game on their own, to get lessons from a pro. The overwhelming majority of PGA professionals will begin those lessons by completely changing the golfer’s swing in every way, rather than taking what the golfer has created and making it better…these are terrible coaches.

Therapists are the same way…which is why it’s so hard to find a good one. A great therapist takes the patient and speaks to them where they are, hoping to guide them to a new place. A terrible therapist simply commands that you do what they say, the way they tell you to, and it leads to utter failure.

Where is this all coming from, you may ask? We get a consistent amount of emails asking me about adding Queenie and Kyle to the show and how the process works, specifically how I “teach” them to be great broadcasters.

The answer is that I don’t, because I recognize that I don’t need to. I don’t coach them, I lead them.

I have said many times, unapologetically, that one of the very few things that I am good at is that I can recognize talent; I know it when I see it. Once I recognize it, my approach is the same as that high school baseball coach who has a major league prospect on his roster…let them throw. I believe in immersion therapy…throw them into the deep end of the pool and force them to learn to swim. The only time I step in is when they’re drowning.

We live in a society that doesn’t want to feel pain, humiliation, and failure. The problem with that approach is that pain, humiliation, and failure are, no matter how hard we try to make this not true, a part of life. And the more people feel and experience those things, the better they get at not only recovering from them but avoiding them moving forward.

A great leader recognizes great talent, gives them whatever tools they need, and then gets out of their way and allows them to grow and thrive, while also realizing that they are going to screw up, say and do stupid things, and, at times, have no idea what is going on because they’re surrounded by more experienced peers…and all of that is ok. Truly talented people will learn through experience and observation. While coaching plays a role in very specific instances, the best leaders allow their players to fall down and go boom, for that is how we all learn.

I played baseball as a kid and will never forget the moment I was called on to win a game…and failed mightily. I was an infielder and pitcher and on this fateful day, I was called on to relieve our starting pitcher in the top of the 7th (we only played 7 innings at the time) with two runners on base and a lead of 2. The batter was a beast named Pete Gaeckle, who’s brother Chris was already in the minor leagues playing for the Boston Red Sox organization. Pete was a great guy, batted left-handed, and was enormous for his age. My job was simple…get him out.

Our coach didn’t tell us what to throw, he let us decide…at least he let me. So, I decided that on the first pitch I was going to catch Pete off guard with what we call a “back door slider.” This is a pitch that, coming from a right-handed pitcher like myself is designed to appear like it’s right down the middle, a perfect pitch to hit…and then dive down and towards the batter. In a perfect world, the batter swings as the ball breaks down and misses it entirely. But in true Dennis Eckersley/Kirk Gibson fashion my slider didn’t drop like it should have and Pete hit it…hard…I’m pretty sure it’s still in orbit, circling one of Elon Musk’s various space things. It was a 3-run homerun, giving them the lead and we lost the game because the other team’s closer did what I couldn’t…saved the game. It was humiliating…one pitch, and I essentially lost the game for my team, at a time when I was supposed to literally save it. And guess what happened? My team rallied around me, hugged me, and reminded me of all the great things I had done that season. I learned how to fail, how to better evaluate risks, and that in life you’re never really alone if you’re doing it right.

My coach wasn’t much of a coach but he was a hell of a leader. The best leaders recognize the difference.

    Rob's Soapbox - Trans-America and the Hypocrisy Over Women's Sports Jan 23, 2022
    Show notes

    I’m so confused.

It was just a decade ago that we were being told that society needed to evolve and understand that women can compete with men physically in sports. It was time to drop female leagues and just have leagues in which boys and girls, men and women, would all play together and against one another. From golf to football this has been the cry for years.

Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam both played in PGA men’s tournaments (and did terribly) and we were told that they could absolutely go toe-to-toe against men driving the ball more than a hundred yards further than them. We needed to grow up as a society.

As of 2018, there were over 2400 girls in America playing tackle football with and against boys, and of the more than 4 million kids aged 6 to 12 playing baseball this year 100,000 of them are girls. And this, we’re told is how it should be. How dare we exclude girls from “male,” sports and thereby insinuate or, worse, say out loud that females are built differently than males and simply don’t have the same biological makeup and structure and therefore simply cannot compete physically against them. https://operations.nfl.com/gameday/analytics/stats-articles/more-girls-are-playing-tackle-football/

    https://www.ajc.com/sports/girls-play-baseball-boys-world/mtB1sMA8ruRQXS5dEviq0I/

Just last year, Haley Van Voorhis became the first woman to play college football at a position other than kicker when she played Defensive Back At Shenandoah University https://www.su.edu/blog/2021/09/29/shes-got-game-haley-van-voorhis-making-history-as-defensive-back-at-shenandoah-university/

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/02/02/haley-van-voorhis-woman-college-football/

As recently as 2020, articles were aplenty with arguments such as “Girls should be able to play the same sports as boys. No matter how strong or how much tougher boys are it doesn’t mean that girls can’t be the same way,” and “girls are just the same as boys,” and even the argument that “Girls’ learning systems are faster and they care more about what they are working on…that proves that girls are definitely able to learn the sports that boys play.” That last one is a brilliant counter-argument to the “physical differences,” rationalization in that it almost cedes the point that females are not equal to males physically, and instead says that they can overcome that with their intellect and discipline. https://students4sc.org/2020/08/18/why-girls-should-be-allowed-to-play-the-same-sports-as-boys/

So, for more than a decade the case has been made on a variety of levels how and why males and females can and should compete against one another head-to-head when it comes to sports. Many toxically masculine men find this to be an unwarranted and unwanted intrusion and they are told to sit down, shut up, and get with the times.

And yet, when women are the ones who are intruded on, their tune sure changes. Thus, my confusion.

Front and center this week has been the story of Lia Thomas, a collegiate swimmer who is demolishing her competition and shattering NCAA records as she literally swims laps around all of the other women in college swimming.

    This is a problem.

Why, you ask? Is it some silly “woke” thing about how unfair it is that one person is better than another, like when everyone screams if a basketball team beats another by 100 points? Not exactly.

Is it that she’s taking performance-enhancing drugs, giving her an unfair advantage? Not quite.

The problem with Lia Thomas is that she was born a biological male. She’s a transgender female. Thomas previously competed as a man at the University of Pennsylvania for two seasons, but she started her transition in May 2019 with hormone replacement therapy. And then came out to her teammates in the fall of 2019 while competing on the men’s team.

NCAA rules state that transgender players must be on testosterone suppressants for at least one year before they can compete as women. Thomas has been on an ongoing regimen of estrogen and testosterone blockers, and thus is now competing as a woman. In other words, she’s not merely “identifying,” as a female, she’s in the process of changing her body and appearance. Now, this should be a nothing burger based on all of the arguments that we’ve had screamed at us for the past many years. After all, while it’s true that Thomas was born in a male body, it’s already been established that “girls are just the same as boys,” (other than the fact that girls are much better at learning), and thus Thomas’ competitors should welcome her and simply figure out how to outsmart her and/or accept the fact that regardless of how she was born, boys and girls are the same.

Except, that’s not even close to what is happening.

A brief pause; I have no position on this. In fact, I’m quite literally beyond bewildered as to how we should, as a society, be handling sports as it relates to people transitioning from one gender to another. I understand arguments on both sides of the debate and waver back and forth as though I’m one of those wavy guy air dancers at a car lot. My fascination with this particular story, and others like it, is the pure, unadulterated hypocrisy of the arguments being made.

We had this same debate a year ago over a transgender female bodybuilder named Laurel Hubbard being allowed to compete in the Summer Olympics, and the same objections were made then as are being made now…and they completely contradict everything we’ve been told about males competing against females. https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-olympics-live-updates/2021/08/02/1023724506/trans-weightlifter-laurel-hubbard-tokyo-olympics

For example, Cynthia Millen, who officiated USA Swimming meets for three decades, stepped down in protest of Thomas being allowed to swim against girls saying, “the fact is that swimming is a sport in which bodies compete against bodies. Identities do not compete against identities…men are different from women, men swimmers are different from women, and they will always be faster than women.” https://canoe.com/sports/its-horrible-transgender-swimmer-lia-thomas-destroying-sport-says-official/wcm/196f2a1c-403d-4a74-a789-6797fbd823ea

Oh my…imagine if she would have said that were the story to be about a biologically born woman wanting to compete against biologically born men…she would have been canceled! She went even further…

“Boys will always have larger lung capacity, larger hearts, greater circulation, a bigger skeleton, and less fat…and no matter how much testosterone suppression drugs (s)he takes, (s)he will always be a biological male and have the advantage.”

I am not here to debate her on the merits of her argument as it relates to transitioning, nor do I appreciate Millen being so classless that she refuses to even use Thomas’ preferred pronoun. The audacity is in the brazen use of the very same set of arguing points that has been used in reverse to justify females competing against males.

She’s far from alone, too. No less than Caitlyn Jenner has weighed in with essentially the same logic:

“We need to protect women’s sports,” Jenner said, “She was born a biological boy, she was raised as a biological boy. Her cardiovascular system is bigger, her respiratory system is bigger, her hands are bigger, she can swim faster. That’s a known.” https://edmontonsun.com/sports/other-sports/woke-world-not-working-caitlyn-jenner-speaks-out-against-trans-swimmer-lia-thomas

Sorry, ladies…you can’t have it both ways.

Either female bodies can compete equally with male bodies or they cannot. Which, again, is not me weighing in on transgender transitions and how it does or doesn’t alter the body, but rather is a commentary using their premise; people, a lot of people, mostly women, are arguing, as was just demonstrated by Caitlyn Jenner, that transgender females have superior athletic bodies in a variety of ways as a result of having been born biologically male. Anyone who made that argument previously was a misogynist. Yet now that women are losing left and right to a biologically born male swimmer, seemingly everyone is coming out of the woodwork to scream from the rooftops that men are superior physically, even on Thomas’ own team! The father of a UPenn swimmer says his daughter and 'a good number' of teammates are furious and 'crying on the pool deck' because feel they can no longer compete fairly with trans swimmer Lia Thomas on their team. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10427265/Parent-UPenn-swimmer-says-daughter-angry-lost-spots-races-Lia-Thomas.html

It's so bad that a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s swim team claimed that Thomas, her own teammate, deliberately lost a race last week to a transgender competitor, conspiring with Yale swimmer Iszac Henig, a biological female, prior to a meet, to prove men aren’t always stronger. Thus, the very argument that has been shoved down our throats as a justification for women playing tackle football, baseball, and anything else they want with and against men, is ignored and deemed to be part of a grand conspiracy. https://dailycaller.com/2022/01/20/penn-swimmer-alleges-transgender-teammate-purposely-lost-transgender-opponent/

None of this even begins to touch on how stunning it is that somehow, America’s national feminist movement has found a way to actually become more despicable by totally abandoning trans females…but I digress…that’s for a whole other soapbox.

This singular argument over transgender women and women sports has laid bare, yet again, how selfish, vapid, and meaningless almost all of these “causes,” are. Women playing men’s sports under the guise of “equality,” has been destroyed by those who had been advocating for it now arguing against transgender women using the very objections that have been made against them as their reasoning. That’s it…game over. No more of this.

And what of all of these woke supporters of trans people? What does it say about their resolve when the first thing they see upon hearing this debate is the need to “choose a side?” Boy, that’s who you want covering you when you’re heading into battle, isn’t it?

In the end, I don’t have an answer, I have an observation. There’s an absolutely stupid and meaningless piece of symbolism known as The Doomsday Clock which is supposed to represent the likelihood of a man-made global catastrophe. It’s a dopey part of the radical environmentalism movement, but the premise gives me an idea. We need a crumble clock to tell us theoretically how many figurative minutes or seconds we are from completely collapsing as a society. In 2019, I’d have set it to 5 minutes to midnight. After 2020, we were at 2 minutes, and after 2021, 1 minute left. With our reaction to this debate, we just clicked a few seconds closer.

    Rob's Soapbox - Hey Pope Francis: F&*K YOU Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

I’ll start with a few admissions and caveats. I am not, nor have I ever been, a fan of organized religion. I’ve dabbled in most of them, ranging from the modern, mainstream “hip” version of Christianity (where they encourage patrons to wear jeans and play Christian rock music at mass) to the Assembly of God (Pentecostals). I’ve attended Baptist, Mormon, and Episcopalian churches and I’m one of the very few people I know who has actually read the Qur'an.

In the end, spirituality is for me, but not organized religion and believe you me, there is a very stark difference. Religion is the process and practice of humans telling other humans what to believe and how God will react…not to mention the collection of endless amounts of money along the way. I am, instead, like the majority of our founding fathers were, a deist; meaning that I acknowledge the existence of a supreme being and/or creator and who or what that looks like is not of your god damned business (pun intended). Deists also believe that this supreme being does not intervene in the universe…he is the ultimate believer in free will and doesn’t have the time or inclination to actually plan out or interfere in the silly decisions humans are making on a day-to-day level, let alone our long term individual fates.

In other words, everyone hates me in the spiritual world. Atheists think I’m a childish moron who, like others, believes in the man in the moon, and religious believers think I’m gutless and looking for a way to split the difference. I’ve heard it all from both sides. The thing that amazes me is that I am neither threatened nor upset at their beliefs, or lack thereof, but boy are most of them very concerned about mine. It might make one wonder or question their level of faith if one were so inclined.

With all of that said, Pope Francis is a hypocritical moron who, quite frankly, needs to call it a career.

I freely admit that I don’t get the “Pope,” thing. Elevating a human on earth to near god-like status (which is absolutely what the Catholic Church does regardless of their spin) is, in and of itself, both absurd and creepy. That said, Pope Francis was ushered in as a change agent who was going to modernize the church. Despite being now 85 years old, he has been embraced by young believers for his acceptance and/or open-mindedness towards the LGBTQ community, women in the hierarchy, and even birth control. For much of his reign, Francis has shown a desire to move the church forward, while understanding that such changes must be done slowly and methodically to maintain the existing base of followers.

    https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2021/09/23/james-martin-pope-francis-lgbt-241483

    https://www.npr.org/2021/02/08/965261708/pope-francis-latest-moves-to-empower-women-in-roman-catholic-church

    https://www.firstpost.com/world/let-couples-not-the-church-decide-on-contraception-pope-francis-writes-in-the-joy-of-love-2719410.html

But boy, did he miss the mark last week…and people noticed.

Pope Francis, on Wednesday, January 5th, lamented that couples prefer pets to children. He said many “do not have children because they do not want to, or they have just one, but they have two dogs, two cats… dogs and cats take the place of children.”

He said that parenthood provides "something fundamental, something important" in people's lives. He said there is "a form of selfishness" in couples deciding to have just one child (or none) and that this "is a denial of fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity."

This is not a new message by the Pontiff; in 2014 he made sure we all knew that having the audacity to be married and choose to neither have, adopt, nor raise any children would lead to a life of “bitterness and loneliness.”

This is all too rich. Here we have a man who has never had children, never been married, and perhaps most notably, never had a dog, lecturing all of us on all three without being remotely connected with the delicious hypocrisy and vapidness of his comments. (Never mind the fact that we have no shortage of humans on this planet as we’re primed to hit 8 billion this year).

    Let’s start with the hypocrisy:

The church talks the talk on families, but it doesn’t walk the walk. Many of its beliefs and policies are decidedly not pro-family.

Consider, for example, the second-class status married people have had in the church itself for centuries. For close to 900 years, the church has deemed celibacy crucial to a priest’s vocation. By being unmarried, the priest more fully conforms to the life of Christ, and thus his role was more elevated spiritually. So which is it? Is this simply the Pope trying to save the souls of those of us not so spiritually elevated as he and others that we have chosen to instead give in to the temptation of flesh by pointing out that the least we can do is provide more humans who can ultimately tithe? (For, let’s not pretend that in the end, all messages from all religions are motivated by one thing and one thing alone: money).

Is now the time to mention the offspring of not-so-celibate priests? No one knows how many there are, but it appears thousands of children may be in this situation, and some may never have been told who their real father is nor have received sufficient child support as part of the decades-old child molestation scandal that has been beautifully brushed aside by the Church so worried about the precious children.

Meanwhile, the pope endorses more adoption. But many Catholic social service agencies refuse to include gay couples as foster or adoptive parents. In judging loving gay unions as not “even remotely analogous to God's plan for marriage and family,” the church cannot see the potential of gay Catholics as good parents.

There’s also the deep inconsistency between the pope’s push for more children at the same time that he erects barriers to couples actually having them. Though he expresses empathy for couples struggling with infertility, church rules have been very picky about which fertility treatments can be approved. One treatment deemed unacceptable is in vitro fertilization, even if it only uses the husband’s sperm and the wife’s eggs. In part that’s because children are not conceived the way God intended.

IVF is “making children instead of accepting them as a gift,” Francis said in 2014. The church retains its opposition despite the fact that IVF often offers couples their only chance for children after other treatments have failed and has led to thousands of successful pregnancies.

I could fill endless space with the hypocrisy of all religion, let alone on this particular subject, but alas, let’s move on to the more salient point:

In 2022, you can’t expect people to believe we are simply here to breed. We are all individual humans with dreams and desires and goals. They don’t always include having children. I know a lot of people like me who don’t even like children.

Many people, of course, choose to have children. Some have one, some have six. That is a choice they make, and I say more power to them, as long as they own the fact that they made that choice and the challenges that come with having brought lives into this world are theirs to bear and burden on their own, and they created their situation.

And most importantly, people who choose to have children are in no way better or more human than those who choose not to. In many cases, the latter group is better, for we have recognized our own limitations and inabilities and decided not to pass those along to innocent lives who never asked to be brought into this world. As Oprah Winfrey acknowledged in 2013, had she chosen to have children, she would have had to choose the things in her life which had to be given the highest priority, and she knew she wouldn’t have chosen her children. She would have chosen her career, and her kids would have both suffered and learned to quickly hate her. Is this the fate Pope Francis wishes upon all babies?

To be clear, there are quite literally millions of Americans who have both children and thriving careers and interests; but they are motivated and driven by that. Many of us are not, and recognizing that is the least selfish thing a human can do. I’m not aware of any of us who have chosen not to have children who are pining to be rewarded, congratulated, or revered for our decisions, it would just be nice if we weren’t demonized for it. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/the-hot-button/why-oprah-never-had-kids-they-would-hate-me/article15964472/

To the most appalling misstep of the Pope’s comments, let us acknowledge an undeniable truth: dogs make us more human. They make us better. Dogs are, in fact, superior to most people.

The idea that dogs are unlike children is ridiculous.

Custody battles break out over dogs. Short of setting up a college fund, having a dog is as heavy a responsibility — one with an expiration date, with heartbreak for the human built into the deal.

I’ve seen people grieve for their dogs harder and longer than they have for friends and family…dog parents know. To the extent that offends parents, go to hell and stop telling those of us who have chosen who and what to love differently than you that you are somehow better and more enlightened. And while you’re at it, remember once again that you are aligning yourself with someone who we’re being lectured at who happens to be a childless Pope who doesn’t have a dog.

Why begrudge people their dogs? Why such a heartless take on man’s best friend? What a misstep for Pope Francis. Why not take his cue from the late Pope John Paul II, himself an actual beloved global figure, who once comforted a small boy grieving his dog with the reassurance that yes, all dogs go to heaven?

“Animals,” John Paul II said, “are as near to God as men are.”

Or perhaps we look to a potentially even greater spiritual leader, the late Mahatma Gandhi who famously said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

And need I remind all that Dog is God spelled backward? Coincidence or divine intervention? What say you, Pope hypocrite?

Rob's Soapbox - No, For The Last Time, You Don't Kill Baby Hitler Jan 03, 2022
    Show notes

Over the holiday break, while lying around and trying to recover from 2021, I found myself getting caught up on a lot of different shows…some decent, some awful, and, as it turns out, too many obsessed with Baby Hitler for some coincidental (I hope) reason.

In a surprise to no one, most of the Hitler-related references were Covid based because, apparently, we’ve all finally realized that we’re literally living in the worst time in history since Hitler, an uplifting thought to say the least. Shows such as “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” (mediocre at best) and the “South Park Post Covid, the Return of Covid,” special (not as good as the first one), both had lengthy time-travel related dialogues about the pros and cons of going back in time and having the opportunity to kill Hitler as a baby.

Since we live in a time when most grown adults have both the intelligence and attention span of a third-grader, such seemingly obvious assertions almost always come with a reaction of “well duh, of course, I would kill Hitler as a baby.” Because, you know, that would stop the holocaust, World War II, and all of that other horribleness.

    This is all incorrect.

Allow me to rephrase; this is all so infantile, no pun intended. The unknowable truth is that killing Hitler as a baby may, in fact, prevent the holocaust and World War II, but that doesn’t mean it would have led to a better ultimate outcome. Needless suffering, genocide, and life-altering maniacal devastation are, of course, beyond atrocious. The argument against killing Baby Hitler isn’t a pro-Hitler stance; it’s an acknowledgment and understanding of the endless presence of evil and the emergence of a stronger world as a result of confronting it. America never would have become what it did in the second half of the 20th century were it not for Hitler.

Additionally, Hitler was far from the only bad actor in the late 1930’s and early 40’s. He’s the figurehead now credited most commonly, but to suggest that Benito Mussolini wouldn’t have filled the vacuum is as unknowable as anything when you contemplate altering history. And on that note, have we learned nothing from Family Guy and Star Trek about the perils of time travel and creating new timelines?

Ok, ok…no, I’m not really going to spend the entire time explaining why killing Baby Hitler remains a bad idea, but is metaphoric to our times.

When Betty White passed away last week my first thought was “what a terrible way to spend your final two years, she would have been so much better off dying two years ago.” The better thought would be that in a just universe, she would have lived a couple more years to see our way out of the mess we’re in now. And that’s the real message; we will see our way out of this.

This, to be clear, is so much more than just Covid. It’s the pure and simple state of our society en masse. We’re a mess; we’re more isolated from one another than ever, we seek no truths, we don’t disagree with people rather we want them annihilated, we’re tribal politically in dangerous ways, we have lost all ability to critically think, we’re addicted to technology and social media while ignoring the devastating effects that has on our mental health, we’re medicating ourselves with substances more than at any other time in our history, we trust essentially no one, we’re offended by everything, we coddle and cater to the lowest common denominators in our society, we’re humorless, and no one knows how to drive anymore.

As awful as all of this is right now, we need to go through it. We don’t kill Baby Hitler and we don’t go back to summer 2019 and stop Covid. We don’t kill baby Fauci and we don’t alter the outcome of the 2020 election. There is a purpose to all of this, it’s just unknowable to us what that purpose is right now.

Prior to Covid, we had my dad on the air and we were discussing how bad the state of society was. Yes, that was PRIOR to covid. He spoke eloquently and confidently about why he was certain America would get through, recover, and recalibrate. I’ve asked him multiple times over the last two years if he still feels that way; through covid, after the capitol riots, and near the end of 2021, and he has never wavered. He, like I, has no idea exactly how or when there will be a seismic shift back towards a more positive America, but he, unlike I, is certain of it.

Dawn has recently adopted the theory that the reason elderly people tend to sit quietly while the rest of the room, filled with younger people babble on, is that they’ve seen and lived it all and they know how stupid all of us are with the things we worry about, get worked up over, and waste time on. And they also know that it’s our process that we have to go through until we figure it out. So, as 2022 begins, I personally have no faith that this year will be the year that we see a seminal change in the direction of our society, but I do have faith in my 90-year-old father’s long-term prediction. After all, he’s been alive since Hitler was made chancellor, so, like Farmers Insurance, he knows a thing or two because he’s seen a thing or two. In Horace, I shall trust.

    Rob's Soapbox - Playground Politics Dec 12, 2021
    Show notes

I’ll be candid…I’m exhausted; mentally and intellectually exhausted. No doubt the last 21 months have taken their toll on all of us, and I’m painfully aware of what they’ve taken out of me. But it isn’t just covid; it’s seemingly everything and everyone from the bottom up, and nowhere is more exhausting than the political playground and the children who are supposed to be our leaders.

Don’t even start with me about why your tribe isn’t the problem, for you are the problem for being tribal in the first place, as we’ve documented and discussed endlessly here. You’re a god damned lunatic for investing in one of these political parties and I take great joy in knowing that you will live an empty and hollow life as you watch all of your asinine dreams never come true as your party betrays you over and over again, and ultimately changes absolutely nothing about your miserable life.

We have literally reached the tit-for-tat, nana-boo-boo level of politics in America. Whatever one party does that the other doesn’t like, the aggrieved party takes to a whole other level as soon as they can.

It’s hard to tell where exactly it all started, but it was this century for sure. When the 22nd century begins and the days of America being a dominant super power are long behind us, history will record that somewhere around January 20, 2001 is when the beginning of the end of the nation occurred. Prior to the election of 2000, we were able to disagree while being polite. We were able to accept differing views. We even acknowledged aloud that ideas different than ours were a good and healthy thing. A mere legal drinking age later, we now seek to destroy anyone who doesn’t see the world the way we do, and we’ll stop at nothing to achieve our goals.

We’ll invent an entire fallacy that claims a sitting president colluded with Russia and we’ll spend 3 years in an attempt to destroy his presidency based on that lie. We’ll tell people that they aren’t actually black, Hispanic, or even women, unless they agree with our policies, despite the provable color of their skin, ethnic background, and gender. We’ll spend a year claiming that an election was a fraud despite leaders and judges from our own tribe telling us over and over again that it wasn’t. We’ll even storm our own capital in the greatest temper tantrum since the Boston Tea Party, and then stick by our actions.

Over the last two decades, the decay of America has been hastened by watching the other tribe make major mistakes and miscalculations and then repeating them in a far bigger fashion, with no regard for the law or the constitution.

In 2013, Democrats held a majority in the Senate while President Barack Obama occupied the White House.

For four decades, a 60-vote supermajority had been required to advance all federal judicial nominees and executive-office appointments. Then, Senate Republicans attempted to filibuster multiple Obama nominees to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, his pick for Defense secretary, and others. In response, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid orchestrated a move to lower the Senate vote threshold to 51 to confirm most presidential appointments.

By 2017, roles had reversed — Republicans held the majority in the Senate, and President Donald Trump sat in the Oval Office. After Senate Democrats, now in the minority, filibustered the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch — Trump's first nominee to the Supreme Court — New Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell engineered his own "nuclear option." The Republican-controlled Senate voted 52-48 to reduce the vote threshold for confirming nominees to the Supreme Court from 60 to 51, upping the ante. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/10/01/fact-check-gop-ended-senate-filibuster-supreme-court-nominees/3573369001/

In 2019, Trump decided to become a king rather than a president and declared the situation at the southern border a national emergency, thus granting himself broad powers and setting the precedent for any high office holder to do exactly the same thing following. All of you Trump-lovers angry at how Democrats have handled Covid have your lovable orange man to thank for their widely sweeping and broad executive powers they have used to destroy our nation as best they can. And now that Trump has shown them the way, Democrats across the country are already using emergency declare things like “guns” a “disaster,” as was done in New York. On the national level, nut cases Bernie Sanders and Alexandra Ocasio Cortez are pleading with President Biden to declare Climate Change a national emergency, which would give him the ability to almost single-handedly order the coal industry to shut down. If his infrastructure bill known as “Build Back Better,” which is essentially just the groundwork for the Green New Deal, doesn’t pass, don’t be surprised if he does exactly that. https://www.businessinsider.com/cuomo-gun-control-new-laws-disaster-emergency-executive-order-2021-7

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/sanders-ocasio-cortez-seek-climate-emergency-declaration

    https://www.npr.org/2019/02/15/695012728/trump-expected-to-declare-national-emergency-to-help-fund-southern-border-wall

The latest salvo in this childish back and forth came just this weekend on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court refusing to stop the new Texas law on abortion from continuing while lawsuits challenging it are heard. Republican lawmakers in Texas this year passed a law banning abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which normally occurs at about six weeks into pregnancy. The Texas law allows private citizens to enforce the ban, empowering them to sue abortion clinics and anyone else who "aids and abets" with the procedure, a brilliant and disgustingly scary way around the Constitution and rule of law which also set yet another new precedent.

It didn’t take long to see how the Democrats, this time, would up the ante on this one as California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday pledged to empower private citizens to enforce a ban on the manufacture and sale of assault weapons in the state, citing the same authority claimed by conservative lawmakers in Texas to outlaw most abortions once a heartbeat is detected. Bravo, Texas Republicans for coming up with this idea! I’m not sure why (or if) Newsome will stop at “assault weapons,” why not go after all guns? Meanwhile, Oklahoma can empower private citizens to enforce a ban on pornography, Oregon can empower private citizens to enforce a ban on gas-powered vehicles, Tennessee can empower private citizens to enforce a ban on black people being outside, and Massachusetts can empower private citizens to enforce a ban on hiring anyone who voted for Trump. Why not? https://www.npr.org/2021/12/12/1063489922/california-governor-gavin-newsom-assault-weapons-ban-texas-abortion-law

This is the lunacy we have created, tolerated, and now cheer, as long as our tribe is winning. Republicans across America are already screaming about Newsome’s pledge, while ignoring entirely that he is right…their tribe did exactly the same thing in Texas, but because it’s their tribe, it’s ok.

Lots of people are aware that it’s a very scary time in America, but what most people aren’t aware of is that we’re still at the beginning. Like usual, we’re too stupid to comprehend the mechanics of anything and we just leap to the worst case scenario; A 2021 national survey by pollster John Zogby found a plurality of Americans (46%) believed a future civil war was likely, which is asinine for the sheer fact that we are too cowardly as a people to ever actually implement such a thing. Not to mention that the powerful protect the powerful and the one thing that will bring our political parties together is an attempt by us to rise up. It’s the 21st century, they don’t need cops or soldiers to keep us in check; they can and would use technology, drones, and if needed, bombs. A couple of heat-seeking missiles dropped on Texas and California (to make it fair to both tribes) would put a swift end to any uprising. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2021/09/16/is-the-us-headed-for-another-civil-war/

And that’s the point; our time to have done anything about this has long since passed. In the end, while the two parties childishly find new ways to get what they want, they’re really just playing games with each other and laughing at all of us that we continue to accept it…because we have to. That’s why I’m so exhausted and so done with pretty much everyone…you actually believe that this stuff matters and that you have some sort of control over it. You don’t, and it’s embarrassing to watch you think otherwise.

Rob's Soapbox - Attention Everyone: Let It Go! Dec 05, 2021
    Show notes

Rarely does someone find a way to express what I am thinking in a more eloquent fashion than I can. Kudos to Jonah Goldberg, a conservative who isn’t insane, for putting pen to paper and finding a way to say what needs to be said over, and over, and over again; getting louder every time. A few days ago his column spoke to not just me, but also to multiple friends of mine who saw it and cheered; including some of my most liberal friends, proving that there are still a few of us who can think outside of our tribes.

Making his piece even more noteworthy, over the weekend, Oregon legislators made it known that they are moving towards making indoor masking, regardless of vaccination status, permanent. Oregon is one of the few states that never lifted its indoor mask mandates and now will become the first to create a mask society. Such lunacy makes many of us shake our heads and wonder what world we’re living in, but it also further points out the divide between us as a society.

If you tortured yourself and watched the Sunday morning news shows all you heard was that the Omicron variant is death…despite endless initial research showing that while it is incredibly transmissible, it’s also not at all dangerous. In fact, it’s akin to the common cold. Yet, we have to scare the living hell out of everyone over cases, not outcomes. With that, I present to you Goldberg’s article, with minor changes made by yours truly:

I’m just gonna throw it out there: If I had to guess—and it’s just a guess—Omicron is good news. The panic and the economic tumult caused by the panic isn’t good news. But I’m betting that the variant itself, is.

Let’s say you’re a maverick scientist with a god complex who plays by his own rules. You want to help humanity by getting rid of COVID as quickly as possible. Maybe just maybe, you’d genetically engineer the coronavirus itself to be super contagious but also much, much more harmless; virtually no deaths and very few hospitalizations, just some sniffles and maybe a head cold.

COVID-19 is here. It’s not going anywhere. For quite a while now, the hope for the long-term has been for the virus to evolve into something relatively harmless, like the cold, or at least relatively manageable, like the flu. As of now, Omicron looks a lot like that.. Omicron might be—we’re still not totally sure—more contagious than the Delta variant, but also less harmful.

Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California-San Francisco, suggested this might—just might—be the case:

Gandhi sees a historical parallel. “It’s really hard for a variant to become more transmissible and more virulent,” she said. “For it to be more mild, that would be an amazing hope, because in a way, that’s how the 1918 influenza pandemic ended. It just became more mild and burned out.”

The evidence that has emerged over the last week or so since Omicron burst into the headlines is more supportive of that theory than the idea that Omicron is a disaster requiring consideration of more lockdowns, travel bans, mask and vax mandates, emergency declarations, and other forms of panic.

In other words, the immediate response from media outlets, stock markets, and government officials was more disconnected from reality than a hopeful scenario.

Now, I get it. Governments and markets often respond more immediately and impulsively to risks and threats than to potential good news. And you know what? The same is true of the human brain. The prehistoric dude who assumed every rustle of the bushes was a saber-toothed tiger ready to pounce might have been overly paranoid, but he was more likely to live long enough to pass on his paranoid genes than the always upbeat caveman who assumed every rustle was fresh evidence that the gods had just gifted him a puppy. If every day he shouted, “Where’s my puppy!?” and leapt toward the sound in the bushes, he’d eventually encounter a tiger, or a bear, or a snake, or a jerk with a spear.

Similarly, the government that responds to every possible threat—troop movements, pandemics, shoddy nuclear power plant design, terrorist fatwah, whatever—with Christmas pony optimism is going to run into trouble.

My only point here is that this thing has gone on long enough that a certain kind of elite panic has set in to the point where it has become institutionalized. Very broadly speaking, the people who didn’t take the pandemic seriously enough were in the wrong a year and a half ago. And just as broadly speaking, the people who can’t conceive of loosening their grip are in the wrong now.

A lot of politicians live in a bubble. Reinforced by a friendly media that lives in the same atmosphere, they’ve concluded that the response to every new COVID development is to take action, to declare states of emergency as the governor of New York did in response to Omicron, to hold onto mask requirements, etc. This despite the fact the reality below them has moved on.

Now, I’m on the record having defended a lot of the early responses to the pandemic—not because I think, or thought, they were all correct in every regard. But at the outset of a pandemic, laissez-faire-ness is not the right response. When you see the Chinese army welding people into their apartment buildings, American government officials shouldn’t say, “We should do that too,” but nor should they say, “There’s nothing to worry about here.”

Still, it feels like there was a peculiar geniality between a lot of technocratic liberals and the pandemic. And whatever the justifications for their gusto for social control might have been, I think those justifications have exceeded their shelf-life. Barring some new evidence—evidence not on display in the Omicron breakout—it’s time to let go.

The same goes for the Republicans who can’t give up on their strange obsessions with the plight of the unvaccinated. The argument over vaccinations is amazingly disconnected with the reality on the ground. More than eight in 10 Americans (83 percent) over the age of 18 have received at least one vaccine dose, and 81 percent of the population over 12 years old has. The CDC even claims that 99 percent of people over 65 have.

So what the hell is everyone arguing about? The 17 percent of the population that has received no doses may be disproportionately Republican, but plenty aren’t the MAGA hat wearing anti-vaxxers whom some Democrats are determined to demonize and some Republicans are determined to defend as civil rights martyrs. And remember, a significant portion of people who refuse to get vaccinated aren’t reluctant because they think the vaccine will make you magnetic or because it’s a deep state conspiracy of some kind. They reasonably don’t want to get it because they already had COVID and thus think they don’t need it, or because they’re young and healthy and don’t think it’s worth the hassle.

In other words, this whole “debate” is shadow boxing among a bunch of elites who can’t let go of the argument even though reality has moved on.

At this point, if you don’t want to get vaccinated, I think you’re wrong. But I also really just don’t care. Similarly, if you really, really think everyone should wear a mask or that things can’t go back to normal unless everyone is vaccinated, I just don’t care (so long as you’re not a policymaker). If you want to stay home, stay home. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, don’t get vaccinated. You can deal with the consequences yourself. Don’t drag me into it. And please, until there are new facts worthy of freaking out in either direction, just shut up about it already.

    Rob's Soapbox - Let's Go Brandon! Nov 28, 2021
    Show notes

Many of you are still trying to figure out why people are walking around wearing shirts that say “let’s go Brandon.” Long story short, never before has a sideline sports reporter made more of a cultural impact.

The Associated press likes to report that it all started at an Oct. 2 NASCAR race, but that’s not the whole story. It really started in early September, primarily at college football games, and then spreading to other sporting events as fans would break out in chants of “F*#K Joe Biden. A month later, at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, Brandon Brown, a 28-year-old driver, had won his first Xfinity Series Race and was being interviewed by NBC Sports reporter, Kelli Stavast. The crowd behind Brown was chanting…what we still don’t know, as Stavast has not publicly commented, is whether she knew what they were chanting and was trying to provide some “family friendly” cover to viewers, or whether she legitimately misheard the crowd. Either way, she suggested on live TV that they were chanting “Let’s go, Brandon” to cheer the driver, and it immediately went viral. Since “Let’s go Brandon,” contains no profanity, it has become the rallying cry of at least half the nation to express their displeasure with the 46th President of the United States. https://apnews.com/article/lets-go-brandon-what-does-it-mean-republicans-joe-biden-ab13db212067928455a3dba07756a160

And while its’ sentiment is crass, crude, vulgar, immature, and indicative of the society we live in…can you really blame them?

I always remind you that I am here to merely call political balls and strikes. I have praised and criticized Presidents Clinton, Bush (W), Obama, and Trump equally. And, yes, that’s just one way of pointing out how old I am.

In all seriousness, every one of those presidents did both great and awful things, and I have never been shy about pointing out both. Unfortunately, as we’ve talked about, in today’s political environment, it is no longer allowed to not be in either the left or right tribe, so suggesting that a Democrat or Republican president did anything good at all is a surefire way to be ostracized by anyone in the opposing tribe.

So, bring it on, libturds, because it’s time to acknowledge what is painfully obvious to, according to all polling, everyone that isn’t in your tribe: President Biden is a disaster.

Yes, I know he hasn’t even been in office for a year. Sadly, the way most Americans feel is “I can’t believe he hasn’t even been president for a year!”

Anyone not wearing their tribal glasses please feel free to present me with anything that President Biden has accomplished that has been, in any way, positive.

He most certainly has not governed across the aisle and found compromise as he promised, nor has he in any way united the country. The one thing that he was elected to do, more than anything, was manage covid better, which he has botched in every way. In fact, by his very own metric, he should resign. President Biden may not recall what he said during a 2020 campaign debate last fall, but that doesn’t make it any less true: “Anyone who is responsible for that many deaths should not remain as President of the United States of America.” At the time the U.S. had recorded 220,000 Covid deaths.

Covid deaths this year have now surpassed the toll in 2020 with 350,000 since Inauguration Day. https://www.wsj.com/articles/bidens-covid-death-milestone-biden-administration-trump-11637708781

Even things covid-related that are popular, he has mangled. Poll after poll shows that overwhelming numbers of Americans support vaccine mandates, yet his heavy-handed, angry grandpa presentation has further split Americans. Rather than recognizing that Anthony Fauci has become a polarizing figure and replacing him with not only a better adviser, but a better messenger, Biden has just lumbered along, making things worse by the day. As of this writing, his administration is once again ramping up the fear over the new Covid Omicron variant, as the never-ending pandemic plods forward. Never mind the fact that the very South African doctor who discovered the variant has made it clear that while it’s very easily spread, the symptoms are mild at worse. So in other words, yes, exactly as predicted, we’re all now just afraid to get the sniffles.

What of other things? The withdrawal from Afghanistan was an unmitigated disaster, global supply chain challenges are being completely mismanaged, along with historic levels of inflation, including skyrocketing prices for gas, food and other goods, much of which is being exasperated by his policies, most notably his shutting down of any type of domestic pursuit of energy independence. China is eating our lunch, and according to one study has already surpassed us to become the richest nation on Earth, the southern border is a catastrophe, and crime is surging across America.

Things are so bad that Democrats are starting to try to claim that Biden’s policies are actually popular, citing no actual evidence, but that there’s um….a disconnect, yeah a disconnect between how thrilled Americans are with the direction of the country and their ability to express gratitude towards the President. https://news.yahoo.com/disconnect-between-bidens-popular-policies-163520184.html

Defenders of Biden try to manipulate statistics as best they can and point out that the economy is growing, but of course, how could it not, since those numbers are compared year to year? Of course the economy is surging compared to a year ago, after we had shut down a nation for the better part of 6 months collectively. And, by the way, Brandon…you’re welcome from those of us who are living with the virus and embracing life rather than continuing to cower in fear. The only other stat the Brandon tribe has is low unemployment, which is a total canard because the unemployment rate only measures people actively looking for jobs. The truth is that tens of millions of Americans are not working because they either don’t have to, thanks to entitlement programs, or because they’re afraid of a virus they keep being told to be terrified of, even though vaccinated Americans have a .001% chance of even getting a breakthrough case of Covid, and if they do, they won’t wind up in the hospital or dead. https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/31/health/fully-vaccinated-people-breakthrough-hospitalization-death/index.html

President Biden is a calamity, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and no reason to believe that things are going to turn around. Perhaps the only thing more horrifying than three more years of this would be three years of President Kamala Harris.

America’s two greatest economic decades have been the 80’s and 90’s, when one party ruled the White House and the other ruled congress. For the good of America, we should all pray that the Republicans regain control of congress and, at the very least, stop the Biden agenda. The days of “working together” are over, and until someone like Mike Rowe sacrifices himself and decides to truly unite the nation, all we can hope for is endless wild swings of the pendulum, hoping that the end result is something close to the middle. Until then, Let’s Go Brandon!
