    Rob's Soapbox - The Inescapable Grid Aug 14, 2022
    Show notes

A few weeks ago, we explored the predictions of a futurist; not someone who reads sea scrolls or talks to God, but an accredited person who, using a combination of research, statistics, imagination, and intuition, analyzes and makes educated projections and predictions about the future. Most people agree Sir Isaac Newton was the first known futurist way back in 1687.

The one we highlighted was named Ray Hammond, who, like the writers of “The Simpsons,” has had an uncanny knack for correctly predicting trends or occurrences around the world. A few years ago, Mr. Hammond outlined what he believed the world would look like, in a variety of areas, come the year 2040. Truth be told, it’s almost impossible to argue with almost all of his predictions, some of which are already here, if only in their infancy.

Back in 2017 Hammond said that by the year 2040, we will all wear a huge range of sensors that will constantly monitor things such as blood pressure, blood sugar and blood oxygen level. DUH…we already have Fitbits and Smart watches, this is a no-brainer long before 2040.

Hammond also said that people will fall in love with robot partners, which will impact relationships and that ultimately, weddings will become rarer and promiscuity will go off the scale as social attitudes get more relaxed. On average, women today have nine sexual partners in their lifetime and men have 11 – expect that to rise to 100 for women and 200 for men by 2040, said Hammond. All plausible.

Most cars will be driving themselves, says Hammond, which we already see the influx and onslaught of this; the only difference is that he says essentially no one will be driving themselves within 20 years.

As the world’s population booms from the present seven billion to more than nine billion, we will not be able to farm meat as we have done up to now. Meat will be created in labs and crops will be grown vertically along the sides of skyscrapers, two things already being experimented with in 2022. Oh, and we’ll all be eating insects. Yummy.

The “scariest,” predictions for most, were the ones involving communication and Artificial Intelligence, which produced the most hysterical and asinine reactions. By 2040, our smartphones will have disappeared, replaced by control centers which we will wear in a series of devices around our body. We will wear smart contact lenses, with texts floating in front of our eyes and earrings that send messages from a virtual assistant into our ears. Our social networks will also become integral to the real world. We may see a stranger in the street and, using facial recognition software linked to our control centers, will instantly know their name and be able to access their profile.

Meanwhile, Computers will be as good at problem-solving as humans, with the prospect of soon surpassing us and then the question will be whether we let them take control or try to regulate and modify artificial intelligence. Or do we genetically modify humans so we can compete with machines?

This is the point at which the most hysterical, paranoid, nonsensical person in the room says something like “not me, I’ll just move to nowhere and stay off the grid.”

    Good luck with that, Clem.

Let’s back up and establish a few things.

The premise of the plan is that everything that has been described as being normal in 2040 is too intrusive and invasive, whether it be from the government, companies, or both. Thus, brave non-conformists will escape to the middle of nowhere and disconnect from everything that might allow “them” (whoever “they are) to find them. To truly point out how absurd this is, we have to first agree that there is no such thing as privacy anymore…right now, in 2022. If you can’t accept that truth, then you have no business being part of this discussion.

Have a conversation with a friend about shoes you like and then wonder why your phone, laptop, tablet, and direct mail all suddenly direct you to places to buy those very shoes and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get a clue.

Last week, we had a chat on the air about Crocs. To do so, I accessed a story on my laptop, using the studio Wi-Fi, about Crocs. Twenty minutes after we talked about it, the studio desktop computer was blasting Croc ads at me. Different computer, no log-in information connected to my laptop, same Wi-Fi, and in the room where the words were being said out loud; how anyone can claim there is no direct correlation is beyond me. We all signed away our privacy two decades ago when we hit “I agree,” on our first cell phone contract.

AHHH! Says the bumpkin! That’s the difference! I won’t sign anything, buy anything, have any tech, etc etc etc.

Well, that’s cute and all but there are only two real ways this plays out and they both end badly for naïve souls that actually believe they can escape whoever “they” are.

If you want to maintain any interpersonal contact, it is conceivable that you could gather up your 10 or 20 closest friends and/or family members and buy up acres of property in one of the Dakotas or some such place and build homes that had no internet, cable, satellite, or any other sort of modern technology and hunker down for your remaining days. It doesn’t sound like much of a life to me in the mid 21st century, but hey, more power to you. Just remember, you literally have to pretend it’s the 1970’s.

No cell phones of any kind, including burner phones, all of which will be traceable via satellite. No cars built after 2009 because all modern vehicles have anything and everything from computer chips to full-on internet access. And don’t get cute and think you can drive into town and use the country’s remaining pay phone landline to call anyone outside of your circle because the minute you do, that person’s information traces your location…and uh-oh! “They,” know where you are. For example, let’s say Dawn and her brood move to Wyoming and dive into a life akin to that of “Little House on the Prairie,” (Google it). One day, she drives her 2003 Ford Pickup truck into town, while wearing glasses and a wig of course, and she decided to call me using the pay phone at the local diner/feed store. We talk for 10 minutes…well, I talk for 33 seconds, she talks for 9 minutes and 27 seconds, and most of the time is spent comparing notes on the latest episode of the Real Housewives of Mars. The conversation ends and Dawn heads back to her compound, while I change my number. A week later, a man on a horse rides up to Dawn’s house with a satchel full of digital pamphlets advertising travel to Mars, Gucci handbags, and tickets to Bravocon 2044! Why? Because I’m ON the grid and everything and everyone I talk to is known to “them.” I surrendered to the reality of the loss of privacy decades ago and am now just trying to make the most of the convenient side of being able to drop ship a case of skittles to my porch in less than 2 hours.

I know that it’s in our blood to resist progress and yearn for “the good old days.” The problem is the “good old days,” are also “bad old days,” and progress is good, and brings scary changes too. Many older Americans yearn for the post-World War II 1950’s when the economy was booming, people were dancing in the streets and the United States had saved the world. Great times, to be sure, but my modern-day marriage to my wife was illegal in every state of the nation…oh, and anyone that looked like her couldn’t vote. Progress was needed. (spoiler alert: she’s black)

We Gen X-ers wax poetically about the 1990’s when we literally had to make up problems because the world seemed so perfect. Relative world peace, a booming economy, and a seemingly positive vibe throughout the nation. Great times, to be sure, but my modern-day protégé and friend, Queenie, wasn’t allowed to exist as a transgender female. Progress was needed.

While all totally unelated to one another, we now live in an America where interracial marriage is not only legal but mainstream, people of all color vote, and the transgender movement, while still burgeoning, is at least allowed. Meanwhile, we also have self-driving cars, debates about cloning and using 3-D printers to create organs, and holograms. Recognizing that we can’t have some and not others, I will gladly take a world where we have to constantly argue over the intrusiveness of technological advancements rather than one where we literally don’t allow people to exist or love.

So get with it, America. Robots are going to be spouses, pork chops through a Star Trek style replicator are coming, and corn on the cob is going to grow on the Empire State Building. The future is inevitable…and we know from experience that it will apparently never include flying cars or male birth control.

    Rob's Soapbox - Fu*k Marry Kill Jul 31, 2022
    Show notes

Almost everyone knows the game…you get three names and you have to choose who you would fuck, who you would marry and who you would kill. For example: Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump, and Laura Bush. Well, Obviously we’re gonna fuck Melania. She probably hasn’t been laid in decades and she’s foreign, which means she’s nuts in bed. Hillary shall be killed and the world will be a better place and Laura Bush we marry solely for the inheritance when the bitch dies. I realize those weren’t the three most fun names available, but I really wanted to kill Hillary so I went with that. Note to the Secret Service: This is satire; I have no interest in coming near Mrs. Clinton as I assume she smells quite rancid and has horrible breath as well. She is safe.

Some people claim the game is better if you use people that you know as opposed to celebrities and politicians, but I would like to suggest that we’re all doing it wrong; while the premise of the game is fun as designed, there’s a lesson to be learned as well. Rather than choosing three different people to focus on, choose one.

That doesn’t make any sense does it?

Actually, it does, if you’ve ever truly been in love, because one of the barometers of love is that the person you care about the most is the one and only person that you want to, at any given time, Fuck, marry and/or kill. Yup...sorry kids, but that’s love…it’s not a fairy tale romance where everything is great all of the time; it’s a never-ending roller coaster of the most amazing times, the absolute worse times, and the most frustrating, rewarding, agonizing, infuriating, confusing, euphoric, and memorable times. That’s love and it isn’t always pretty and it’s rarely easy.

The fuck and marry ones are easy to understand if you’re envisioning the person you love the most; but lots of people will push back on the kill category saying stupid things “I’d never want to kill my man!” Of course not…not in practice or literal terms, but if we’re being truly honest there are times where, in the moment, you fantasize about it because you care that much. I know it sounds ludicrous but that’s love! It’s totally ludicrous and drives us all to say, do, and think things we wouldn’t otherwise. If you’re in a relationship with someone you’ve never wanted to kill then you aren’t truly in love with them…period.

You have to remember that hate is not the opposite of love, indifference is. When you reach a point that you genuinely couldn’t care less what happens to your significant other, they have become insignificant and you are not in love with them any longer. When you can envision with glee your hands wrapped around their throat, you’re still in love, because you still care, mightily. Note to local law enforcement: My wife Christina is safe and sound and while there are absolutely times I want to wring her neck in a non-sexual way I have not, as of this writing, done so. Please stand down.

So take a moment and reflect; if you’re in love, picture that person and ask yourself this: In our most heated and frustrating moments do I want to kill them? If your answer is no, then you aren’t in love. You probably love them, but you aren’t in love with them, because they haven’t taken you to the depths of your soul and found your deepest, darkest places. This exercise isn’t about your ability to actually murder, it’s about the level to which you truly have given yourself to someone and allowed them into who you are…and that’s why you want to kill them. Once you hand yourself over to another person and become truly vulnerable, they have a weapon they use against you at anytime, and when they piss you off, you feel as though they’re doing that, even though that probably isn’t their intention at all. Regardless, in that moment, when you are so hurt and so angry, there’s a part of you that imagines, just for an instant, pulling that trigger, or driving that car, or being the one that shoves them into the volcano…it’s fleeting…but it’s a real thought. That’s love.

Not all the time, mind you…this should be a once, maybe twice per year instance. Quarterly if things are rocky and monthly if you’re married to a Samoan, cop, alcoholic, Mel Gibson, Chris Brown, or a black woman.

The FMK game is stupid because the first two are easy, even when you’re given wretchedly hideous humans to choose from. You fuck the hottest or craziest one and marry the one that you can tolerate the longest, but hey, you’re also still fucking them. It’s the kill that matters most. For example: Rosie O Donnell, Roseanne Barr and Lizzo.

I’m killing Rosie O’ Donnell in an instant because I can’t stand that bitch. Roseanne I’m going to have to fuck and then run myself through a touchless car wash five or six times and then see a hypnotist to make me forget everything. Lizzo we marry because she’ll be on the road a lot, black don’t crack, and again...the inheritance. Note to the NYPD; I understand that Ms. O’Donnell resides in a penthouse in New York City…she is safe as this is satire and I have no interest in ever coming near her, let alone touching her. Please go back to chasing pizza rat.

You can always go the other way and focus on three amazing, to you, choices. For me, we’ll go with Gabrielle Union, Rihanna, and Halle Berry. I’m marrying Rihanna for the inheritance as previously established (plus the sex is part of the deal so I win). While the remaining choices are difficult, I’m going to have to fuck Halle Berry because I’m pretty sure she’s insane in bed, which sadly means that my ultimate celebrity crush, Gabrielle Union, must be killed. Note to Hidden Hills, California police: I had to Google the fact that Gabrielle lives in your fine community and I have no idea where exactly. She is in no danger and I would never think of hurting her. This is satire. That is all.

And just like that, we’re off track again. Rather than throwing out three random names, think of the people in your life that you think you love…which of them do you occasionally want to kill? Those are the people you love the most. The rest are just there.

    Rob's Soapbox - The Women I Hate Most Jul 24, 2022
    Show notes

I absolutely understand white men, especially those over aged 40, who are resistant to the idea that America is systemically racist.

Before I lose too many of you, let’s start with what that means; systemic, or institutional racism, is a form of bias that is embedded in the laws and regulations of a society or an organization. It manifests as discrimination in areas such as criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, education, and political representation. In other words, the deck is stacked either in favor of one group of people or against another…or both simultaneously.

To suggest to white men that America is designed that way is, to some of them, an attack. They hear it as “you’ve had it easy,” even though that’s not what’s meant; rather the implication is not that white men have had it easy, just that they, as a group, haven’t had it as hard as any other group. Others hear less of an attack and more of an insult directed towards a country that they’ve had it pretty good in. Then there are those who think it’s just basic whining and others who simply can’t see something they’ve never had to experience. I don’t excuse their ignorance, but I understand it.

I’m not even going to bother to address patently racist white people who are simply hateful and ignorant and fall for the trap of buying into stereotypes that cast people of color as lazy, angry, and criminal and say idiotic things like “those people have just as much an opportunity in this country as I do.” ‘Merica! That’s beyond ignorant, repulsive and stupid and will get no oxygen from me.

You have to be more than intellectually dishonest to ignore the fact that the entire foundation of our country was designed and created by 40 white men. When you write the rules, you inherently, and sometimes intentionally, make sure that they favor you…it’s human nature.

I am a proud American who will argue that there is no greater nation on Earth and that the founders were some of the most brilliant and brave humans to walk this planet. I will also acknowledge that there’s a reason the preamble of the Constitution references the pursuit of a more perfect union; it’s because we are from perfect…and our history shows the litany of mistakes we’ve made, as does our present. The bottom line is this; it is simply impossible to ignore that America and all of our basic systems and institutions were mapped out by white men who claimed that all were created equal while owning slaves and granting women almost no rights of their own. C’mon man.

There is this paranoid strain of white people that somehow believe that acknowledging the truth weakens the nation and demeans things we’ve accomplished. A more despicable variant of this are those who feel their grip on power threatened, and believe me, that’s a very real thing…but again, I get it when it comes to white men.

What I don’t get is the demographic I have truly grown to loathe the last many years: white women who claim racism doesn’t exist nor is it engrained in our system…particularly white women over 40.

There has never been a better time to be a white woman in this country, and even today, it isn’t a level playing field. It’s closer than it’s ever been, but no honest woman can say that she hasn’t experienced some, if not a lot, of discrimination, harassment, or at the very least a need to prove herself in a way that a male colleague of hers hasn’t had to…but it’s nothing like it was as recently as 25 years ago. It is because of the women of Generation X and those before them that millennial and younger women have it better than boob-laden humans ever have in America.

So when a white woman over 40 stumbles anywhere near claiming there is no racism in present-day America or its’ institutions a very simple reality check should snap them into place as follows:

You’re a woman in 2022 and you are aware, through your own experiences, that sexism and discrimination still exist…and you can tell stories of being in your early 20’s a few decades ago and how much worse it was then. You know that as recently as the mid 1970’s women couldn’t get credit cards without a husband, had no legal recourse to fight back against sexual harassment, and could be fired from their job if they got pregnant. It wasn’t until 30 years ago that spousal rape was illegal in all 50 states, and sex discrimination was not outlawed in health insurance until 2010.

You live in a country that was designed by men who said from the jump you didn’t matter when it came to important decisions because women couldn’t vote until America had existed for 130 years. By definition, the nation was sexist at its’ inception, and to this day the scars are prevalent. But at least you were allowed to freely exist on some levels. It wasn’t great, but you weren’t literally enslaved.

If you have the ability to acknowledge the inequities bestowed upon women it is impossible to not realize and recognize how much greater those same hurdles are for people of color….like literally impossible! Black people were enslaved for 100 years after our founding and didn’t get the right to vote in America for another 45 years after women did…well, white women…and that right came exactly 100 years after the end of the Civil War that freed them as slaves. My marriage was illegal in this country only 54 years ago and was still technically illegal in states like Alabama until the year 2000…and you’re going to claim that racism is over? That there is no systemic bias within our system? Go to hell…seriously.

I get it…women have had it rough by the time they hit 40…most have had kids which has destroyed their soul, and plenty of them have had to deal with totally unhelpful husbands who sucked the life and fun out of them. All of that in addition to the baseline challenges that still come with being a woman in America; but you don’t make your life better by denying the reality of the challenges that others still face…challenges you know all too well.

    Rob's Soapbox - Yup... I'm Going There Jul 17, 2022
    Show notes

We were on vacation when Roe Versus Wade was overturned…

I will now pause as you realize that we’re about to talk about abortion…

Put simply; the Dobbs decision returned the issue of abortion to each of the 50 states. In practical terms, regardless of intent or motivation, the Supreme Court found a way to further divide a nation that hasn’t been this divided since the Civil War. Essentially, we will, when everything shakes out, have a country in which about half of the states are destinations for what I am calling “abortion tourism.” Economies will thrive on providing safe havens for women who want to have abortions but live in states that don’t allow it. Meanwhile, the other half of the states will continue to do everything they can to try to prevent such things from happening by attempting to criminalize leaving their state to intentionally commit what would be, in their state, a crime, but is not in another.

In other words, things are going to be a lot more complicated and messy; just what this nation needed.

For my pro-life friends, please be self-aware enough to recognize that you’ve accomplished absolutely nothing. Babies will still be aborted, most likely at near-identical rates as before, and the only thing that will increase are dangerous practices by desperate people who would rather risk their own safety than even fathom the thought of raising a child.

For my pro-choice friends, please calm the hell down. While there are many unknowns moving forward; for now, Plan B is available nationwide via the mail (I’d suggest stocking up if you’re in the practice of promiscuous unprotected sex), and far more important than that…as hard as this is to swallow (which is what more of you ladies should do to make this topic less relevant)…the Dobbs decision was a fundamentally solid legal opinion.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg herself often talked about how, despite being ardently pro-choice, the Roe decision was beyond flawed from a judicial standpoint. It was also miserably timed. When Roe was decided in 1973, America was working its’ way to a consensus on abortion. In 1972, a Gallup poll found that 68 percent of Republicans believed abortion to be a private matter between a woman and her doctor. The government, they said, should not be involved…10 percent higher than Democrats, but still a solid majority of Americans of all types. Had the Supreme Court stayed out of it, America would have moved, of its natural volition, towards legalizing abortion across the land and it would have been codified into American law with very little fanfare and controversy. Instead, by having it decreed by a panel of judges creating a new interpretation of a “right,” it was left open to attack and made it America’s longest-running, most divisive issue. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/segments/otm-when-republicans-wanted-abortion-rights

The Dobbs decision, as written, is not about abortion. It is about returning the decision to individual states as to whether or not abortion should be allowed. While that will result in half the country not having local access to abortion, it is not the stripping away of a right. It is, as was intended when the nation was founded, allowing 50 different laboratories of democracy based on the residents of each state.

Unfortunately, that’s not sexy…it’s just factual, and so people scream and yell rather than listen, learn, and make personal decisions on where they want to live, how much they want to advocate, and whether or not to vote.

The far more troubling part of the Dobbs decision was the consensus written by Justice Clarence Thomas. While the official opinion of the court correctly and explicitly stated that the Dobbs decision did not impact other previously decided cases based on the fourteenth amendment like gay marriage, access to contraception, sexual intimacy between consenting adults, and interracial marriage, Thomas, a black man married to a white woman, wrote otherwise. Thomas voted with the 6-3 majority that struck down Roe. In a concurring opinion, however, he expressed the view that he would go further — much further — than the majority in thinking through the implications of the decision and explicitly mentioned the Griswold case that legalized gay marriage across the nation. To say this is disturbing is an understatement, and also guarantees court challenges to everything from gay to interracial marriage in coming years. Here’s hoping the court relies solely on its’ official majority opinion that those and other 14th amendment cases are protected. https://www.vox.com/2022/6/24/23181723/roe-v-wade-dobbs-clarence-thomas-concurrence

    https://newsletters.theatlantic.com/the-third-rail/627535eb95033600218457a5/roe-v-wade-obergefell-gay-marriage/

This points to the undeniable thing that the court has done; it has guaranteed endless challenges to everything people find to be “icky.”

A fascinating case in Texas is a glaring example if this. State law now dictates abortion, and in Texas, the fall of Roe put in motion a trigger law that will ban virtually all abortions and defines an unborn child as a living human from fertilization to birth. Given that, when an officer pulled Brandy Bottone over for driving by herself in a high occupancy vehicle carpool lane in Texas just days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, she pointed to her pregnant belly and told him her unborn daughter now counts as a person. You can wave your hand and p’shaw that it’s nothing more than a gimmick, but how can a judge possibly disagree with her based on Texas state law as written? Which opens up a can of worms that will bog down courts for years. For one thing, can a woman in Texas who is merely pregnant in December claim that child on her taxes now? https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/texas-woman-says-unborn-baby-counts-as-passenger-in-hov-lane

The most troubling story I’ve seen since the Dobbs decision was announced, bothered me on many levels, but none more so than the cold water dose of reality I had to endure. I pride myself on being anything but naïve. I consider myself acutely aware of what people are capable of, what they believe, and what actually occurs in a world where most people are far more comfortable pretending that the darker side of humanity is scarce. Please. This is why I always laugh at people who think TV shows like The Blacklist are far-fetched. Grow up.

When it comes to abortion, one of the pro-life arguments that has always given me major eye-roll is the claim that pro-choicers view it as another form of birth control. While I have always granted that, of course, there are some people with so a low value of life they will give no second thought to having unprotected sex endlessly with the idea that any unwanted pregnancy can just be aborted. But they’re rare, and extreme, I have long said. Most people who have, or have considered, an abortion, are agonized by it…in my experience, any way…but I really had reason to believe that was true well beyond my own personal history as well…until an article popped up in the USA Today last week chronicling woman after woman who tell their tale of being terrified that their husbands will get them pregnant in a post-Roe America.

In the article we get this gem: “Elena, a mother of two in rural Nebraska, used to not think twice before having a "date night" with her husband. Now, with abortion laws returned to state legislatures as a result of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June, Elena fears what may happen if "date night" leads to an unplanned pregnancy.”

Later in the article we meet Amber Goldsmith, an administrative assistant in Lee County, Florida, who understands these feelings. One of her past relationships, she says, ended in 2016 due to her ex's anxiety over abortion access being jeopardized by Donald Trump's presidency. "We stopped seeing each other because he was just too afraid," Goldsmith says. "He was too anxious to even consider dating somebody and having a sexual relationship with them if there was a possibility of them getting pregnant, however small."

Leave behind the irrational lunacy of their fears, and the clear inability to truly grasp the seriousness of having sex ever…the idea that there are way more people than I thought who view abortion as a very casual safety net made my stomach turn. https://sports.yahoo.com/afraid-ill-pregnant-husband-sexual-140023591.html

Comedian Bill Burr has a new Netflix special filmed at Red Rocks in Colorado. He ends it talking about abortion; and while it was filmed long before the Dobbs decision, it perfectly encapsulates the issue. I’d claim that he stole the bit from me, since he parrots what I’ve been saying for decades, but I am self-aware enough to know that I’m not the only person to formulate a rational position on an irrational topic.

The truth of the matter is this; in general, I’m pro-choice. I agree with former president Bill Clinton that abortion should be safe, legal and rare. I also believe that for the most part, it’s none of my business…but I do know this: You ARE killing a baby. Just own it.

Taking the plan B pill the day after sex is not, in any way, the same thing. Plan B simply stops fertilization from happening like any other form of birth control, but it does so after the fact. There was never a human forming or growing inside of you.

As Burr says…Let’s say I take all of the ingredients necessary to make a cake, whip them into a batter, place them into a mold and then put it in an oven. About 15 minutes later, you know during the first trimester of cooking, you come along and open the oven, grab the pan and throw it all over the room, thus ruining it. It wasn’t a cake yet, but it was going to be had you not interfered. You killed my cake…own it.

Finally, can we stop with the lazy trope that men have no place in this discussion? Until science makes it widely available and easy for you broads to get pregnant without us, we have a place at the table of debate on this subject; maybe it shouldn’t be the dominant voice, but we have a role to play in the final outcome. It’s like when a traditional heterosexual couple buys a house…we let you pick out the drapes.

Rob's Soapbox - The Dog Ate My Homework Jul 10, 2022
    Show notes

While on summer vacation, I probably composed, in my mind, a dozen different soapboxes. Being away from the job makes me more creative and free-thinking; and even though I avoid the news like the plague during these times, my mind wanders to various subjects, ranging from the funny to the serious, the topical to the philosophical.

I don’t write these ideas down for a couple of reasons; first, I don’t want to work and I’m afraid I won’t stop myself at a couple of sentences and pretty soon…BAM! I’m writing soapboxes on vacation. Secondly, I’ve always figured that if the ideas are that good, they’ll save in my memory or come up repeatedly until I actually execute them. It’s just my process and it’s served me well.

Sunday morning before returning to work arrived, and I knew that a new Soapbox was on the top of my very long list of work-related items. While I had slowly climbed back into working a few days earlier, Sunday was going to be a long one. I did myself no favors by sleeping in almost later than any day during the past few weeks, getting me an anxious late start. For me, that’s 8AM and about 3 lost hours of previously expected work. I rolled over and realized my wife wasn’t next to me, which was somewhat of a relief as that meant she had gotten up and fed the dogs who are used to eating around 5 or 6 in the morning during vacation. Like any normal red-blooded American, the very next thing I did was grab my cell-phone to be met by a long text from my wife explaining that yes, the dogs had been fed, but she had endured a terrible night of not sleeping much, and was not feeling well (women issues I’m guessing) and so, she had laid down in the guestroom to get some more sleep.

This immediately presented some interesting challenges. We have a 19-week-old puppy; Sarge, the Black Lab, who has simultaneously reminded us of both the joys and horrors of having a puppy in the house. With Sarge, and our 8-year-old other Lab, Scout, both having just eaten and pooped, my wife decided to let Sarge roam free, since she assumed I would be up soon after she sent her text to me, and with the dogs having just eaten, they’d just rest for a bit. Plus, the guest bed is too high for the dogs to safely jump on and off of, and kenneling Sarge presented the possibility of him whining, depending on his mood, thus ruining her chances of resting. Bear in mind, all of this was predicated on my usual sleep schedule and her knowing I would get up early to get to work. This text had been sent over an hour earlier.

I leaped up, got dressed, and suddenly realized that Scout was at the foot of the bed, meaning he had gotten fed up with his puppy brother and escaped to his refuge since Sarge is incapable of climbing the staircase still. Whenever Scout has had enough play or is just annoyed at his little brother, he heads upstairs. This, I deduced, was all very bad because it meant that:

    • A. Obviously, Sarge was downstairs alone and possibly bored and
    • B. They had been playing and/or Sarge had done something Scout knew he wasn’t supposed to do, and Scout had removed himself from the guilty area.

I fully expected to come downstairs to any of the wonderful things we’ve experienced already, like a torn-up roll of paper towels, or any of my wife’s various hair rubber bands that he has somehow found somewhere.

As I turned the corner of our spiral staircase, Sarge heard me, emerged from the hallway, and began his puppy frenzy that occurs whenever a human is seen for the first time in a few hours. It’s as though we’re meeting again after years of being apart…every…single…time. As he did his Tasmanian Devil impersonation, I surveyed the rooms in my view and saw that all was seemingly calm and intact and in its rightful place. Sarge has matured very quickly and is very smart (he was housebroken almost immediately), and so, I thought (and hoped), maybe he had just laid down at the foot of the guest bed and rested, and maybe, just maybe, Scout took that cue to take his place at my feet.

I turned the corner to the hallway, heading to my home office, and realized that its’ door had been left open; this meant the puppy had access to anything inside, and even though we had just had the manor deep cleaned, the office is filled with puppy catnip. Bills, show prep papers, even recording equipment that has nice sharp edges perfect for a puppy with growing teeth to gnaw away at. As I entered, all was in order, for the most part. There was a slightly chewed-up envelope on the floor, which I grabbed and saw was a bill for my wife. This was odd because that means he got it from somewhere other than my office, and since Christina’s office is upstairs and he can’t get there yet, the origin of this was a mystery. No matter, I thought, if all he did was lie there and chew away at some harmless paper for a while, we’re off to a good, albeit late, start to the day. Time for breakfast!

I placed the torn up bill on the bar to show my wife when she awoke and strode to the kitchen, still seeing no evidence of any puppy-related shenanigans. Hearing the sound of food preparation, our portly sausage Scout emerged downstairs to make his way to the kitchen and commence begging but first had to endure the same “I haven’t seen you in years” greeting from Sarge that I had experienced only moments ago. As they bounded around like drunken kangaroos, I was free to begin cooking. They spent the whole time playing in my view and allowing me free to cook and begin watching my usual battery of Sunday morning news programs to prepare for the week’s shows. I began eating, standing at our kitchen counter as I did so, allowing me to see both the TV and the dogs and I noticed, as I looked over, both of the dogs were now stuffed into one kennel. From my view, it looked as though maybe Scout was puking, or just had, and Sarge was about to eat it. Wonderful, so much for my hope for a peaceful morning…and now I had to deal with dog vomit while trying to eat breakfast. I raced over to discover that there was no puke, but rather a fascination with something in the corner of the kennel. I shooed the dogs away and retrieved a pair of my wife’s designer sunglasses (Gucci, if you must know). I inspected them, and they seemed undamaged, so they made their way to the bar for the looming “any idea how he got these items” discussion when she arose from her slumber.

After eating, I set up to work in the living room so that I could keep an eye on the dogs (mainly Sarge) while working. Traditionally, when I take my seat on the sofa, both dogs just lay down and sleep. If my wife is present, and we’re trying to enjoy a show together, it’s chaos because God forbid we get to enjoy some of our very limited together time, but I digress.

With hours of work to do, I needed them to chill, but, as the universe continued to work against me, Sarge initiated a play session with Scout. Fine, they’ll tire each other out and then lay down.

Until Scout abandoned me. Distracted by work, it wasn’t until he was halfway up the stairs that I realized Scout had had enough of the puppy and was heading to his sanctuary. I got up to retrieve Sarge from wherever he was and there, in the middle of the entryway, he laid…chewing on a pen. An ink pen! He hadn’t gotten far, but where in the hell had it come from? No matter, it was now on the bar for the “the talk,” and I commanded him into one of the two giant, oversized fluffy dog beds we have in the living room which are filled with various toys these spoiled dogs insist on removing from their toybox and hoarding in their beds. Fine, just chew on a toy and let me work!

A few minutes later, I look over at Sarge chewing on the giant antler and think “awwww, this is what I love about…” wait a minute he’s actually chewing on something behind the antler! I harrumph, get up, and retrieve from his mouth a sunglass pouch. I rip it away from him, put the antler in his mouth, stomp to the bar and sit back down to commence working. I look over, and Sarge has turned the opposite direction and is chewing on…another ink pen! Back up I get, grab the pen, and begin searching the puffy bed for other hidden items. I retrieve two other pens AND another pair of designer sunglasses (Prada, if you must know). Now I’m beyond frustrated at the start to my day, having gotten essentially nothing done and it’s almost 9AM, and stumped as to what this pest got into and how and from where! Fine…I don’t have time for this, and now that the bed has been properly searched and the human items seized, hopefully, he’ll just sleep out of boredom or chew on an actual dog toy!

Working commences. I’m on the sofa, tray table set up, laptop keys banging away, Sunday morning news on, the day has finally started. I’m answering emails, printing news stories, listening to toxic political discussions, and of course, taking the occasional pool shot on my cell phone via texting with Dawn’s husband.

And then I notice that Sarge has switched to the other oversized, pillowy bed filled with nooks and crannies…and he’s chewing on something. Up I pop, (most likely at this point, cursing aloud), and I retrieve from his mouth…yet another pair of designer sunglasses (Louis Vuitton, if you must know). I move the little varmint and dig into the bed. In the end, between all of his various hiding and hoarding spots, he had accumulated a collection of an envelope with a bill in it, 4 ink pens, two sunglass pouches, a receipt, and 6 pairs of designer sunglasses (Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and 3 pair of Gucci, if you must know).

Now, our bar was filled with confiscated items worth thousands of dollars, all seemingly undamaged (except for the pens, which if I had to choose, was quite happy he chose to go to town on them as opposed to the glasses), the puppy was sleeping (pouting), and I could resume working.

About 30 minutes later, Christina woke up and I was finally in full work go-mode. We briefly talked, and she determined that our 19-week-old ninja had found his way over the top of the sofa to a table behind it which contained a box of hers which had the glasses (and some various office supplies for reason), and had helped himself, while also being wily enough to not only hide all of the items but spread out the hiding places to fool his witless humans. Knowing that she needed to wake up, I kissed her and said “I’m heading to my office to work,” she apologized for the start of my day, I lovingly told her to shut up because I was just glad she felt better, and I made my way to the office, leaving her to the menace in fur.

Once in the refuge of my office, I was able to shift to writing and recording this week’s soapbox. I sat straight up in my giant, obnoxious, super comfy office chair, opened my laptop, and realized…I had absolutely no god-damned ideas or inspirations to form into words. Oh, and I’m way behind on everything and don’t have time to not be inspired.

So, you got this instead, because quite literally, the dog almost ate my homework. He certainly chewed up a ton of my time (Eh? Eh?).

Ironically, as I began writing this the little annoyance sauntered into my office and laid at my feet being the perfect dog. Until 5 minutes later when he made his way to my garbage can and pulled out a rubber band and began running away from me. I returned the irritant to his female human (who was trying herself to eat breakfast) and she advised me to close my office door, which I did and have been left in peace for the last hour to truly get this stupid thing done.

And now, as I unpack from our trip to Las Vegas and I put away my five Rolex watches, I can finally reflect on my wife’s designer sunglass obsession!

    Rob's Soapbox - We Need Shame Jun 12, 2022
    Show notes

Shame is a vital part of a freely functioning society, and it has been disappearing in ours for over 30 years now.

There was a campaign in the 1990s to understand and sympathize with those who steal. The classic example used was the struggling single father who needed to feed his baby, and therefore, robbed a 7-11. I’m not even sure this ever happened, but the example was bandied about endlessly as a way to teach us all that there’s a story behind everything, and therefore, we should feel compassion towards this mystery father and not only NOT prosecute him, but more importantly, not shame him or those like him who are merely “down on their luck.”

Thus began the long and winding road of shaming no one, ever, for anything.

From criminals, we moved on to bodies; no one should ever be made to feel “less than” because of their appearance. There’s no such thing as “fat,” or “obese” and certainly, no one should ever be called ugly or disgusting because someone somewhere surely finds them attractive and, therefore, we all must.

We’ve gone so far in the body positivity movement that we now shame beautiful people.

Yes, you read that correctly; as we remove shame from those who don’t fit traditional norms of “beautiful” body size and shape, we have shifted the shame to those who do. Victoria’s Secret, for example, got rid of their famous “angels” last year (those women who were of traditional super-model build), and instead created an entirely new group of models who now advertise their products in their plump, oddly shaped, more acceptable ways. https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a36766170/victorias-secret-getting-rid-of-angels-launching-the-vs-collective/#:~:text=Victoria's%20Secret%20is%20doing%20away,the%20future%20of%20Victoria's%20Secret.%22

Other things and people we’ve been told over the years not to shame include everything from misbehaved kids in public to pedophiles….and everything in between. https://www.metroweekly.com/2018/07/tedx-speaker-argues-that-pedophilia-should-be-accepted-as-an-unchangeable-sexual-orientation/

    https://www.cnn.com/2012/06/21/opinion/cantor-pedophila-sandusky/index.html

The problem is that when there’s no shame in society, there are no rules, no boundaries, and eventually, quite literally, no laws.

The past few years has seen a laser focus on homelessness and removing the shame from it. In fact, we’re supposed to now call it house-less-ness. They have a “home,” it’s on the streets…they just don’t have a house, you see. https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/homeless-unhoused#:~:text=In%20the%20mainstream%20discourse%20and,HUD%20uses%20in%20its%20reports.

Here’s the problem; while there are many legitimate and sad reasons that people find themselves in horrible situations; whether it be an inability to feed their children, or having no structural home to live in, that doesn’t change the fact that there must be shame attached to those realities in order to motivate and compel people to do everything in their power to avoid winding up in those situations and to get their asses out of them as swiftly as possible if they ever find themselves there.

It's time for that reality check to be re-instilled into our society: Shame is a motivator.

The reason we have 11 million job openings in America and an almost record low labor participation rate is that there’s no shame in not working. Conservatives will tell you it’s because the government is paying them to stay home which is a provable lie, and liberals will tell you that people are both sacred of covid and unwilling to work for big, mean companies who don’t offer the proper benefits, which is also horseshit. Regardless of the reasons, the safety net of knowing that there is no shame in not working provides comfort to those spending their days living with enabling relatives, playing video games and draining society. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/20/6-reasons-why-americans-arent-returning-to-work.html

    https://www.rgj.com/story/news/money/business/2021/09/02/great-resignation-why-people-not-returning-work/5661302001/

Having grown up paycheck to paycheck and being told more than once that we couldn’t afford to do something I desperately wanted to do, I knew at a young age that I never wanted to feel that way as an adult. I was instantly motivated to make money.

Once I ventured out on my own, I remember the pit in my stomach as I stood at the grocery store check out line waiting to find out if my check would clear or my ATM card would be approved. More than once, I was denied…and had to walk away hungry, empty-handed, and ashamed…but also committed to continuing to work my ass off to ensure I would never feel that again.

When I started to make what I thought was “decent money,”, particularly for a 21-year-old, I remember heading to Home Depot to buy a fancy new gas grill only to discover I could barely afford a not-even-close-to-what-I-wanted model. I bought it…so that every time I used it I could motivate myself to throw that thing out as quickly as possible after working harder to never again have to disappoint myself or anyone I shared my life with simply because we didn’t have the money. Today, as the economy is at its lowest point in 40 years and most people dread going to the gas station or grocery store, neither my wife nor I give it a second thought, and absolutely nothing about our lives has changed. I vividly remember having $5 cash, needing to get to work, and an empty gas tank. Gas cost $2/gallon and I had to stand there at the pump, doing math to figure out if I could get to and from work on only 1 gallon. Never again, I swore.

We need shame…we need to inflict it and use it as a motivator. It has its’ place.

Perhaps most importantly, we need to, at the very least, not remove it entirely and normalize everything. The latest disgusting example of this is the new national campaign that doesn’t discourage drug use at all…it just encourages that you do it safely and with friends.

    No, this isn’t a joke.

It’s called “know overdose…” get it? They’re going to teach you how to KNOW how to properly and safely overdose. Billboards, which began in San Francisco (of course) are now spreading to other high use heroin areas across the country teaching people how to do absolutely nothing to stop using drugs and instead to make like-minded friends and have emergency overdose drugs on hand for when things get of control.

Rather than encourage people not to use heroin at all, the campaign teaches people to do so in groups because it's less harmful. Which is like saying, "If you're going to play Russian roulette, please do so with plenty of medical equipment handy in case we need to put your brains back inside your skull."

The campaign is providing deadly misinformation. Let's go through the three main ideas:

    · Use with people and take turns. Take turns? If you're the last person to inject heroin, that means everybody else is already blitzed out. Who is going to help you now? Also, the campaign never mentions the importance of not sharing needles, so we can assume that will be happening at these heroin parties. That's an excellent way to spread plenty of nasty infectious diseases.

    · Get free naloxone. Returning to the Russian roulette analogy, this is akin to saying, "Wear a helmet." Naloxone certainly can save the life of a person who has overdosed on heroin or another opioid, but it doesn't always. One study claims that naloxone, when administered by just an average person, is effective 75% to 100% of the time. That's good, but it also means that roughly 1 in 4 people who overdose on an opioid will die anyway, even if given naloxone. Plus, it completely green-lights the idea of overdosing by saying “hey, we got your back if you go too far.”

    · Let's take care of each other. Uh-huh. The best way to take care of each other is to encourage people never to take these dangerous drugs. Heroin is inherently unsafe because it's impossible to know what stuff bought off the street is adulterated with. It could be anything from fentanyl (which is far more potent and deadlier than heroin) to rat poison. The neighborhood drug dealer isn't always trustworthy…hard to believe, I know.

This is what happens when a society spends decades making up excuses to explain, justify, rationalize, and normalize illegal, idiotic, dangerous, and most importantly, shameful behavior. Having empathy and sympathy for users is the job of counselors who are working with them one-on-one…the job of society is to shame and marginalize them as a lesson for others who consider going down that road.

And think about this irony; we just spent the last year dividing an already divided nation even further by shaming, shunning, and punishing people who wouldn’t get a controversial vaccine that many didn’t even need because they already had natural immunity from having had Covid…and don’t start with me, I’m vaccinated; I made that choice, as opposed to the loser downtown making the choice to fill his veins with heroine, bleach, AIDS and god knows what else. He and I are to be revered…the “idiot” that said “no, I talked with my doctor and decided that the Covid vaccine isn’t for me?” He should never be allowed to see a concert, travel, work, or congregate anywhere ever again. Great…now the next time I go see a Broadway show I’ll be sitting next to some strung-out heroine-addled bum and his wacky friends who are supporting each other as they overdose their brains out. Good times…and totally logical, too.

Rob's Soapbox - The Argument Against Democracy Jun 05, 2022
    Show notes

There are between five and seven basic arguments against democracy and they all fall flat for me…except for one, which was on display more than ever the last few days.

As a rule, I will always side with freedom. While there is no such thing as absolute freedom, America, for the most part, is as close as the world has ever seen to such, and in my opinion, that’s a good thing…until I am reminded of the one argument that always makes me rethink my commitment to freedom and democracy.

The most popular argument against democracy is that the constant change of leadership leads to instability. This is asinine. America isn’t a company that needs the same CEO for decades; democracy thrives with constantly new ideas, people, and directions.

Another objection is that consulting more people leads to delays…seriously? More ideas are a bad thing? More perspectives and life experiences are wrong? Get a life

My “favorite” (sarcasm) complaint of democracy is “Ordinary people don't know what is good for them,” which is the most elitist thing I have ever heard. The idea that there is some sort of council of elders who know better how the rest of us should live is beyond disgusting. https://brainly.in/question/4848474 https://www.dpsbokaro.com/dpsi/docs/econtent-2020-21/senior/21.04.2020/IX/HISTORY.pdf

The case against democracy that always gives me pause is that it ultimately creates such stupidity, that the society is no longer able to function. It sounds like a comedy bit, but it isn’t; in fact, it’s backed by centuries of examples of free societies finding themselves so comfortable that they simply become ignorant, lazy, arrogant, and apathetic. No doubt we saw endless signs of that over the last 2 years with covid, and, some would argue, the last 6 years, ever since the 2016 presidential election. Nothing is more lazy and childish than aligning yourself blindly with a ”team,” aka political party, and following any and everything that group does, regardless of how astoundingly wrong, extreme, or stupid it is, and yet that’s where most Americans find themselves these days. https://theprint.in/world/democracy-devouring-itself-people-too-stupid-to-sustain-it-academic-paper-creates-furore/297989/

The most recent example of American stupidity came just this weekend. It will seem to many as though I am simply exaggerating the facts to support my own personal hatred for this particular institution, but I’m not; I’m deadly serious, because of the entire premise that this society is completely ignorant and blind to.

Tens of millions of Americans spent the last four days drooling over something called the Platinum Jubilee, the 70th anniversary celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s reign over Great Britain. While it is true that the royal family has almost no official power any longer, they continue to hold an enormous amount of sway over the people of England, and the idea that anyone in this country reveres that is despicable.

Over 245 years ago this nation went to war to become a nation. At the time, we were ruled by a king thousands of miles away who imposed his ideals onto us. He was unelected and had been deemed to be from a family of better genes than any of the rest of us; that was his claim to power, and at some point, European Settlers in America had enough and revolted, creating the United States of America. And yet, for some reason, Americans from near and far, east to west, spent the last four days entranced by a ceremony not just honoring the royal family, but worse, honoring the very idea that we fought to have independence from. The Platinum Jubilee is entirely about worshipping royalty; acknowledging that those from the gene pool of the Windsor family are, in fact, better than everyone else, and are to be revered. It’s beyond disgusting, and yet so many of us don’t see that…and that’s where the stupid comes in.

What could be more idiotic than deciding that the very institution your ancestors fought and died to escape should in any way be acknowledged, let alone celebrated? This is literally no different than gleefully attending the family reunion of the man who mass murdered your entire family generations ago, and yet we do!

As a society, we have become more tolerant, accepting, understanding, and compassionate, and for the most part, that’s a great thing. We don’t have to also become the inevitable trope of stupid, ignorant, arrogant and apathetic in the process.

To dismiss any of this as some sort of American anathema towards its own history and/or education is absurd. This is the very definition of self-loathing ignorance and stupidity, and it is a wonderful argument against democracy. While I will still always choose and advocate for freedom, it does offer pause to consider that perhaps people are better served with more structure, more rules, and more forced compliance as it relates to their nation’s own history. After all, we live in a country that willingly complied with the most asinine demands of its’ alleged leaders as it related to stopping the spread of a virus; no doubt they’re more than willing to take a test every few years reminding them of the founding of their nation. Until then, long live the Queen…apparently.

    Rob's Soapbox - To Quote "A Few Good Men..." May 30, 2022
    Show notes

Warning; you may be wasting your time, or at least putting yourself into a position of Déjà vu. It’s very likely that you will hear a version of this soapbox at some point on the RAD Radio show in the next few days; it all depends on mood. My mood, the team’s mood, the audience’s mood, the mood of society, and the news of the day as a whole. We’ll see.

The RAD show has been off for a couple of weeks and is now back, for a little while…and then we’ll be gone on our previously scheduled Summer Vacation, and then we’re scheduled to be back. We’ll see.

    Curious? Good.

That’s right; we’re still taking our Summer Vacation as scheduled despite an unwanted and unwelcome couple of weeks off in late May. The reason we’re still taking our vacation is simple; if we don’t, you may never hear the show again.

    Sound ominous? Good.

There are actually many reasons that the show has been off for a while and I’m going to share one of them with you now; it’s hardly the main reason, in fact, I’d currently rank it as the fifth-greatest cause for our absence. That’s right, there are at least five and this is a distant fifth to be sure, but it allows me a way to address some of the questions and concerns that have arisen lately.

Coming in at number 5 on the countdown of the causes for the show’s absence the last two weeks is...you!

Well, that’s not fair, really. I hope and have to believe that the people I am about to discuss with you don’t read or listen to the soapbox, naïve as that is. I need to think it’s true right now, and I’m going to.

This is quite a thing we’ve built together, this Maggot Army of ours. We’ve had some amazing moments together, particularly over the last few years. Brine-a-Palooza 2021 was one of the most gratifying and emotional events I’ve ever been a part of. The flood of every known feeling to mankind was palpable and overwhelming as nearly 2000 of us got together for, in some cases, the first time in almost two years at a major public event. It was truly magical. We have another live event coming up this weekend as we’ll gather with 300 maggots to day drink some Tahoe Blue Vodka and just hang out with good people. Because these days, perhaps more than ever in most of our lifetimes, we need only that. The truth is that if we hadn’t already scheduled, planned, and sold tickets to that event, you almost certainly wouldn’t have heard the RAD show live again until mid-July.

    Sounding dire? Good.

I’d estimate, as the guy with the most direct access to this information that on the whole, a total of at least 90, and maybe as high as 95% of the maggot army is comprised of good people, many of you much more than that. Between phone calls, both on and off the air, live events, random public meetings, emails, and even the wretched cesspool that is social media, I’m convinced that fewer than 10% of you are anything less than kind, decent, warm, caring, and generous. I have seen it in so many ways that you will never convince me otherwise.

It's that lower 5-10% that bears a very small part of the responsibility for our recent absence…and before I actually give them any credit, let me be clear that they actually had nothing to do with it, I was simply in a place where I allowed them to. It’s on me, as most things involving RAD are.

Last Monday, when the top 4 reasons were swirling all around me and I had to make the call to cancel that day’s show, I was in a very bad place emotionally. I was overwhelmed with the weight on my shoulders and the events that had caused the show to already miss a week prior, and the reality still lingering before me in regards to what had to be done to mitigate those top 4 reasons. I did the right thing and I pre-empted the show. Literally minutes after the announcement was made, emails began flooding in, and they weren’t pretty, nor kind, nor caring. To be candid, we’ve been spoiled by the love and support of our audience, and I do the best I can to keep everyone, including the army, insulated from the wretched vermin who sneak their way in occasionally. I don’t look at any social media posts, although I am briefed when there are those that are concerning and need to be investigated by our security team. Side note; how sad it is that a talk show needs such a team, but believe you me, now more than ever, they are vital to our ongoing ability to be on the air…when we can.

    Concerned? Good.

In the days that followed, the 90+% showed up in droves via messages of concern and well-wishes, so I am sure that the early Monday morning crowd was just a fluke of timing, but in hindsight, it was a welcome one, for it cleared my eyes and made a very difficult decision quite easy for me. In the minutes after I started reading emails demanding to know why we were off the air again, arguing that we “owed” an explanation, asserting that we had an obligation to explain the reasons for our absence, my blood began to boil knowing what I knew were the causes.

The audacity, arrogance, and entitlement of people demanding that their FREE radio show (believe me, people that pay to be members didn’t write any of these, we already cross-checked our databases as we added to our freak file/watchlist) explain their absence incensed me at that moment. I reached out to Brandon who concurred that he was demoralized by the response in the immediate and I saw red…and that’s when I knew I had made the right decision to not air Monday’s show…and that’s also what made it so easy hours later to realize we’d be missing another week.

I’ve been dealing with idiots for over 30 years…not the playful kind, in the 90% where we all get it; we all understand I’m screwing with you and many of you actually wear it as a badge of honor to be ripped apart by me. Some of you even intentionally write idiotic things to see if you can get me to go off on you, often succeeding, bravo. I’m talking about genuine idiots, dangerously stupid and wretched human beings. I’ve dealt with almost every form of threat, from hollow to real, and every form of hateful, vile, subhuman hate speech you can imagine. It’s just part of the job; and even when you hear me “lose it” on the air towards what seems like one of them, I’m in complete control. We get much, much, worse emails than you have ever heard read on the air. Those get sent to our team, and we maintain the aforementioned freak file on them, watching for them to escalate and doing whatever we need to do to maintain the safety of RAD.

But they never get to me. I never flinch, inside or out, I just accept it. As I said, it’s part of the job, and I know how to deal with it; at least I did until last Monday. When I felt my reaction inside I knew I belonged nowhere near a microphone and I had made the right call; and when the people I love and trust the most suggested later that day that we needed another week off, it was beyond easy to agree thanks to that 10%.

Anyone who is talking about movies this weekend is talking about Top Gun 2: Maverick, and they should be. It’s extraordinary. I have no words for what an incredible job they did, but I’d like to reference a different Tom Cruise Movie from 30 years ago called “A Few Good Men.” Towards the end, there is an epic and iconic courtroom scene in which Cruise is questioning Jack Nicholson’s character and one of my favorite cinematic moments plays out. As I seethed last Monday I heard Nicholson’s words in my ears…”I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to!”

Imagine; keyboard warriors sitting at home, upset that their radio show wasn’t on the air, but showing no regard for all of the possible reasons we might be missing. You see, to the bottom dwellers, we’re just dancing monkeys, here to entertain. We have no real-life issues, problems, or challenges and there’s absolutely nothing unique about being in the public eye that in any way should cause or even allow us to not be there to dance on cue for them when they need an escape. As they pounded out their angry, hateful, in some cases vaguely threatening messages, they never once stopped to think about why this show that they love so much and that they know loves and takes seriously being on the air every day might be gone, because they didn’t care, and they probably wouldn’t even if we told them the various reasons. They never cared to consider that perhaps someone on the show had gotten some horrible medical news, or had to deal with a suddenly dying or dead loved one. Maybe someone on the show has been privately already dealing with a serious issue that they chose not to share, which is their right, and they took a turn for the worse. Perhaps someone is getting divorced, is in legal trouble, or realized that they have a demon they need to slay with the help of the rest of us. Maybe the show was under threat, maybe someone on the show had been attacked, or maybe three or four of those things were all happening suddenly at once to more than one member of the team. Maybe it’s something else, or many other horrible things I didn’t even mention.

Absolutely none of that is far-fetched and I promise you that a form of more than one of the things I just listed are in the top 4. But the gutter scum doesn’t care. Usually, I pity them and laugh at them…to be so disgusting, depraved, and heartless is their hell, not mine. On Monday, I let it be part of my hell for a little while, and that was my failing.

We’ll be back this week and we’ll be at our best, and we’ll do what we do every morning: We’ll give you more of ourselves than any other show on any other platform in this country does. We’ll share more about ourselves, our experiences, each other, our families, friends, and significant others than anyone anywhere. And we’ll keep to ourselves the little bit that we each either choose to, or have to for various reasons.

Disturbed? Perplexed? Angry? Distressed? Good. Me too…that’s why we’ve been gone, and that’s why we’ll be gone again in a few weeks, with the hope that by Mid-July the world will be back on its’ rightful axis, at least what passes for such in 2022 America.

As for sharing further details, I make no promises, nor do I feel any obligation to do so. The physical and mental health, the well-being, the safety, and the dreaded work/life balance of my team and I are paramount to me above all else, and I will do and not do whatever needs to be done to protect those things first and foremost, and I will never apologize for doing so. In the process that often means that you will be frustrated by not knowing what’s going on, which I understand, but I also know this…if I may once again pull from that same Tom Cruise movie “A Few Good Men…” as it relates to some of the top 4 reasons we’ve been gone: You can’t handle the truth.

    Dumfounded? Good.
