Qool DJ Marv // Buttamilk Archives // Instruments of Mass Construction

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the design and atmosphere of the venue & the energy of the people, then blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Marv gets your attention with buttery blends & a fluid, continuously ascending momentum that feels inviting, relatable, and captivating. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

Born & raised in Philadelphia, Marv’s path began with bedroom practice in the late ’80s, early gigs at Emory University & Columbia University, and formative years around radio—interning at WDAS, observing & learning at WKCR while sitting in on Stretch & Bobbito’s late night Hip Hop sessions, and appearing on WBAI’s Underground Railroad with DJ Spinna & J-Smooth. In the mid-’90s, residencies at Bar Six, Ludlow Bar, APT & other downtown NYC rooms sharpened his ability to read a room and guide it.

That same era also gave rise to buttamilk—a brief but influential cultural concept rooted in Philly, where DJ-curated Jazz-flavored instrumentals, live voices, and spoken word coexisted. Buttamilk was about enriching flavor & nourishment, cultural presentation, and community. That philosophy still runs subtly through everything Marv plays.

From 1998 through August 2024, Marv worked extensively with HBO’s events department, providing DJ sets & pre-show music for premieres & screenings at venues including MoMA, Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, the Apollo Theater in NYC and even  the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a resident DJ within the Soho House ecosystem and continues to play regularly at Soho House & Dumbo House in New York City.

Marv’s international journey began in 1999, when a cassette mixtape in circulation led to invitations from Manchester’s Rae & Christian and their creative network, including Grand Central Records, Counter Culture, Fat City Records, and the legendary Friends & Family parties. This opened doors to performances across the UK and Europe, as well as Ireland, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. A key figure in this chapter was Mr. Scruff, whose influence on UK club and festival culture helped situate Marv within a global community of DJs committed to eclecticism, warmth, and long-form musical storytelling.

Since 1994, Marv has produced mixtapes, CDs, and digital compilations that illuminate soulful global underground music. His mixes are loved for their seamless continuity & thoughtful sequencing —guiding listeners from the familiar into discoveries with a fluid flow. Marv maintains & shares online an archive of over 700 recorded DJ mixes.

During the COVID era, Marv developed his skill set & expanded into producing score-like atmospheric compositions, releasing multiple EPs & albums focused on mood, texture, and narrative support designed for podcasts, film, hospitality, listening-focused environments and your headphones & earbuds.

By welcoming connection & bridging genres & eras, you’ll discern an exuberant idealism in a Qool DJ Marv set. He thinks & hopes, “With a universal vibe, everybody gets down.”

    Words by BoldAsLove's Rob Fields:
Here’s something to start your weekend off right!
Shout out to Qool DJ Marv and The Mighty G-man for handling the mix. These two brothas make mighty cool mixes. Philly meets NYC in Harlem and timeless mixtapes featuring enduring music emerges. Marv’s been spinning around the globe for at least a decade, and you can hear G-Man on Saturday nights with Jay Smooth on WBAI’s Underground Railroad, one of the longest-running and most respected hip hop shows on radio. I’m proud to say that Marv and G-Man have done a killer mix of some of hottest summer sounds from the new black imagination.
I know I hadn’t said much about this. One day, I was musing on Twitter that I was thinking about a summer mixtape. G-man responded right away. And since I’ve known him and Marv for a minute, it was a no-brainer. We all met, I gave them the music that I was feeling, and they did the rest.
Here’s the track listing. Goes without saying, but if you like what you hear, support these artists.
    Blind – Game Rebellion
    Warrior Bones – Tamar-kali
So What Am I (Sunday Night Res) – Res
    Shooting Holes – Twin Shadow
    IIETYS – BLK JKS
Mojuba – Melvin Gibbs’ Elevated Entity
Godda Get It – No Surrender
    Huff + Puff – Just A Band
Hypen (part 1) – Peekaboo Theory
    Crazy – The 54
    Box – Shelley Nicole’s blaKbushe
    Burned Bridges – Living Colour
Ghost and the Witness – Earl Greyhound
Come Alive (The War of The Roses) – Janelle Monae
    Lazy Daze – J*Davey
    Paradise Circus – Massive Attack
Hyphen (part 2) – Peekaboo Theory
So, got a long drive ahead? A lot of errands to run this weekend? This is the perfect soundtrack, if I do say so myself, and I think you’ll agree.
http://www.boldaslove.us/ is your source for information about new Black imagination.
And special thanks to Glenn G-man Holt. Together, brothers.

Qool__Marv Live at Opening of The American Table Cafe and Bar by Marcus Samuelsson | September 27 2012 on the campus of Lincoln Center Sep 28, 2012
    Show notes

In the few minutes before this grand opening at that angular room of glass, wood & concrete with New York's 65th & Broadway as its surround backdrop, I thought, "How sweet it is to be loved by you..."

    Show notes

Every set includes something else. Revising re-visions regularly refreshes realities.
The poster is of Ella Fitzgerald singing to Duke Ellington and others. Duke has the biggest smile.
I play music as a DJ because I can't play Jazz as a musician.
Piano players are the only people I envy. I do my best, however, because Jazz mindedness means that I improvise every time. I may repeat songs, rarely do I repeat sets.
Each audience is unique and deserves a unique performance: http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-10-10T04_38_03-07_00

Extra Time: Hip Hop Jazz In The House | Pre-Show Music for the Chris Dave, Robert Glasper, & Pino Palladino show at Ginny's Supper Club | August 16 2012 Aug 17, 2012
    Show notes

Extra time set as we all awaited the arrival of the triumphant trio, within whom, some were rehearsing with D'Angelo elsewhere in New York City.
Keeping the joint jumpin' by locking all in the house into a groove where time dissolved. When you hear "move your body' dissolve, you can only imagine what happened when the musicians starting creating music on the spot, in the spot, Ginny's.

This special evening included surprise fireworks in the sky.
Breezy sunshine faded into twilight and the next thing you know, boom & pow! Wow.
I was in Boston Common the afternoon before this http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2012-07-25T20_43_52-07_00. It has nothing to do with Soho House, you got the picture from previous sets, it has everything to do with the way I feel when I start to play. Game face can look like whatever, inside I'm beaming.
Be surprised by the songs (or pull out your gadget to look them up) go for the ride. The entire evening is a painting, the songs are my colors and the mixer is my paintbrush.

Qool DJ Marv Jazzing It Up at the 2006 HBO Emmy Party | August 27 2006 Jun 21, 2012

"...HBO, always a big winner, unambiguously celebrated another change this year: the ceremony’s move from September to August. The cable network acknowledged the shift from the brink of fall to the waning days of summer by transforming the Pacific Design Center’s fountain plaza into a wonderland setting for what event designer Billy Butchkavitz called “an enchanted evening by the sea.” He added, “I got to have fun with it because it was in the summertime.”
When speaking with Billy about his vision, he gave me two ideas to build my set around. The idea of a luxurious sound that one may enjoy while vacationing by the sea and the inspiration for that sound was a song Billy suggested called Night & Day.
I used Night & Day as the "leitmotif," or recurring theme/musical idea and used the three instances of the song in this mix as pivot points to go in other directions of vibes and feeling.
This set was played with 3 drummers who also did their own thing at times throughout the night. After the Jazz grooves we got into dancing music and all and it was a great night.
I even wore a suit that was 'Salmon,' or kind of pink...so did the drummers! I don't mind costumes at all as this isn't just a dj thing, it's a spectacular spectacle.
A breezy and celebratory evening under the stars entertaining the entertainers and I'm glad that I can share what that sounds like.
