Qool DJ Marv // Buttamilk Archives // Instruments of Mass Construction

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the design and atmosphere of the venue & the energy of the people, then blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Marv gets your attention with buttery blends & a fluid, continuously ascending momentum that feels inviting, relatable, and captivating. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

Born & raised in Philadelphia, Marv’s path began with bedroom practice in the late ’80s, early gigs at Emory University & Columbia University, and formative years around radio—interning at WDAS, observing & learning at WKCR while sitting in on Stretch & Bobbito’s late night Hip Hop sessions, and appearing on WBAI’s Underground Railroad with DJ Spinna & J-Smooth. In the mid-’90s, residencies at Bar Six, Ludlow Bar, APT & other downtown NYC rooms sharpened his ability to read a room and guide it.

That same era also gave rise to buttamilk—a brief but influential cultural concept rooted in Philly, where DJ-curated Jazz-flavored instrumentals, live voices, and spoken word coexisted. Buttamilk was about enriching flavor & nourishment, cultural presentation, and community. That philosophy still runs subtly through everything Marv plays.

From 1998 through August 2024, Marv worked extensively with HBO’s events department, providing DJ sets & pre-show music for premieres & screenings at venues including MoMA, Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, the Apollo Theater in NYC and even  the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a resident DJ within the Soho House ecosystem and continues to play regularly at Soho House & Dumbo House in New York City.

Marv’s international journey began in 1999, when a cassette mixtape in circulation led to invitations from Manchester’s Rae & Christian and their creative network, including Grand Central Records, Counter Culture, Fat City Records, and the legendary Friends & Family parties. This opened doors to performances across the UK and Europe, as well as Ireland, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. A key figure in this chapter was Mr. Scruff, whose influence on UK club and festival culture helped situate Marv within a global community of DJs committed to eclecticism, warmth, and long-form musical storytelling.

Since 1994, Marv has produced mixtapes, CDs, and digital compilations that illuminate soulful global underground music. His mixes are loved for their seamless continuity & thoughtful sequencing —guiding listeners from the familiar into discoveries with a fluid flow. Marv maintains & shares online an archive of over 700 recorded DJ mixes.

During the COVID era, Marv developed his skill set & expanded into producing score-like atmospheric compositions, releasing multiple EPs & albums focused on mood, texture, and narrative support designed for podcasts, film, hospitality, listening-focused environments and your headphones & earbuds.

By welcoming connection & bridging genres & eras, you’ll discern an exuberant idealism in a Qool DJ Marv set. He thinks & hopes, “With a universal vibe, everybody gets down.”

Very special to be a part of a long weekend long birthday celebration in Tulum, Mexico.

You can thank birthday celebrant FK and her good man DB for the share of this warm-up mix that kicked off her amazing weekend.

"Buttamilk – It all started with you." – Jill Scott (from the liner notes of her debut LP Who Is Jill Scott?)
Essentially, buttamilk is a concept that started in Philadelphia around 1994 with three fellows named Gene, Kenny, and Marv. They all met working as interns at the classic soul station, WDAS, in Philadelphia.
Realizing that we all had a great time together and all had a love for music, especially music that was just under the commercial radio radar, we decided to band together and throw some parties. Kenny would host, Gene would get on the mic, and Marv spun the tunes.
Our first event was a house party for Kenny's birthday. We thought that it would be cool and a twist to invite some singers to sing over instrumentals as people moved and grooved...just a slight departure from the "throw your hands in the air like you just don't care," chants, you know?
Simplistic and hardly groundbreaking, but to the audience we played to, it was a thrill. People thought they were hearing new versions of tracks because they couldn't see the artists. Sometime after that party, we brainstormed on how to present what we did at that jam, but shed more light, literally, on the artists performing.
We wanted to put together a show that would showcase music, singing, and spoken word to working class Philadelphians whose taste were fairly mainstream. We wanted to bring a high level of entertainment with style and intellect to everyday people. But, we needed a name...
    Buttamilk

High On The Verve at the Soho House Qool Marv's 7th Re-Vision | Election Night (U.S.A.) 2012 Dec 24, 2012
    Show notes

It's probably a once in four years occasion for Soho House to install televisions on their exquisite 6th floor. This is a recording from election night 2012.
Many instrumentals and few vocals were in the atmosphere in the air that evening.
I'll never forget that night, however, I have forgotten most of these tracks : )
Enjoy this fluid flow from an American who was born on the 4th of July in Philadelphia.
Born to be alive and great to be alive during times that will always be remembered.
    Cheers to history.

This night need to sound celebratory. Celebrating 50 years of the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll with plenty of doses of soul. Members of the band wanted a night about them to also celebrate the artists that influenced them. There was a moment in the evening while the 3rd of 3 Rolling Stone's songs in-a-row was playing and Mick sent over a friend to let me know that I was doing alright with the soul and more heaping doses please.
They kept on with the keep on, the rock on, the get your groove on, and the c'mon.
    Roll on...play on.
Stones fans, sure, fantasize about what you would've played...there are so many more songs that I wanted to play, but again, this night was about them and what they wanted to hear and represent...
"You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
    You get what you need"

    Love'nTruth&Hope'n II Oct 25, 2012
    Show notes

Back in the house of the everlasting lovebirds. Again, let's listen in on this couple's house:
She loves him and loves love and that's all good but the greatest love of all after all is, "Learning To Love Me - Charles Webster featuring Diviniti"
All ears with few words, he responds, "I Understand You - Charles Webster"
She assures, "Here With You - The Layabouts"
He had no doubt and has no doubt about how much of she is in he, "You're In My System - The System (Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler's Atmospheric Vocal Mix)"
She welcomes his inviting eyes and exciting words, "Inside My Love - Trina Broussard (Remixed By Timmy Regisford And Karizma)"
Following her to where she wants to, he adores and anticipates, "There You Are - Gene Farris featuring Russoul"
    The curtain closes/intermission
    "Lionel's Jam - Miguel Migs"
    "Makes Me Love You- Eclipse"
Sometimes she can be vocal, "Crown Royal - Jill Scott (Remixed By Timmy Regisford And Quentin Harris"
And he can appreciate what she says, who she is, and what she means to him, "Fortunate - Maxwell"
But he's still thirsty and something tells him to treat her right if indeed it is not time for good night. "Night Song - Sandboy & Nanar"
Relaxed, reassured, & revived she reveals more, "Worth Your While (Dub) - Autumn"
Love'nTruth&Hope'n imagined and practiced by Qool DJ Marv
    Don't you wish?
