Premium Episode 171: The Veiled Prophet Cult feat Devin Thomas O'Shea(Sample) May 18, 2022
    Show notes

The Ku Klux Klan, debutantes, Monsanto Chemical and an orientalist poem about a veiled villain. Let's take a look at the creepy "veiled prophet" cult based in Saint Louis, Missouri. It's a men's club of rich and powerful locals dedicated to crushing labor movements and parading their daughters in front of each other. Ellie Kemper (Erin from NBC sitcom The Office) was crowned their "Queen of Love and Beauty" in 1999. But activists played a role in revealing their racist past. Saint Louis journalist Devin Thomas O'Shea guest writes the episode. Trickle Down Episode 5: White Slavery (Part 3) Sample May 14, 2022
    Show notes

After the White Slave Traffic Act passed in 1910, the federal government was ready to start enforcing it with help from the young Bureau of Investigation. The problem is that the gangs of white slavers who snatched innocent girls off the street proved to be more difficult to find than they thought. Instead, the law was used to enforce a moral crusade, punishing citizens who engaged in sexual activity that prosecutors deemed immoral. It was also used by J. Edgar Hoover to target Charlie Chaplin at the beginning of the second red scare. This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. Trickle Down Episode 4: White Slavery (Part 2) Sample May 07, 2022
    Show notes

Americans added their own twist to white slavery narratives around the turn of the century. They placed a greater emphasis on the threat of immigration. The new flow of immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe made middle class Americans anxious about the changing ethnic character of the country. This growing fear was seized upon by President Teddy Roosevelt’s Immigration Bureau inspector: Marcus Braun. Braun, himself an immigrant from Hungary, traveled the country investigating white slavery. His shocking report was echoed by a congressional investigation. This provided all the pretext necessary for the creation White Slave Traffic Act in 1910. “White slavery” became much more than a narrative. It was law with which the federal government could enforce its version of sexual morality. This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. Trickle Down Episode 3: White Slavery (Part 1) Sample Apr 30, 2022
    Show notes

In the early 20th Century narratives about “white slavery” led to creation of the White-Slave Traffic Act of 1910, which was wielded by the U.S. federal government to police sexuality. These narratives also helped fuel the growth of the FBI in its early days. But before these narratives arrived in the United States, they first grew in Victorian England. To help expose the horrible truth of the underground sex trade, Evangelical feminist activists fighting for better treatment of prostitutes and the protection of children found common cause with an unscrupulous London journalist named William Stead. But Stead was more interested in selling newspapers than the truth. The result was a horrifying scandal that involved Stead kidnapping a 13 year girl and a deformed narrative about sex trafficking that rippled through history long after his death. Henry Herbert Goddard’s work studying the supposedly degenerate “Kallikak” family made him world famous. In the words of a teacher at the Vineland Training Center, it also made Emma Wolverton, aka Deborah Kallikak, the “World’s Best Known Moron.” But the acclaim Goddard achieved for his work faded as psychologists discovered fatal flaws with his research. However, before Goddard’s work was dismissed as worthless by the scientific community is was cited as justification for eugenic programs both at home and in Nazi Germany.
