Premium Episode 178: The Mankind United Cult with Ryan Serisu (Sample) Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

A 1930s California cult that prefigured QAnon and posited a world-shattering battle between the "Secret Rulers" and "The Sponsors". Its leader, Arthur Bell, enlisted people in the "Universal Service Corporation" and made them participate in a multi-level-marketing scheme to sell books. Bell's vision also included "a race of little men with metallic heads who lived at the center of the earth" among many other oddities. The cult eventually morphed into a church after some unwanted attention by the FBI. Ryan Serisu of the Rumor Flies podcast has done in-depth research on the subject and guest wrote the episode. Trickle Down Episode 10: Little Loans (Sample) Jul 15, 2022
    Show notes

In the 1970s a new method of helping the poorest people in the world emerged: microlending. The idea is to give the very poorest people, those who live on less than two dollars per day, very small loans they can use to start businesses and serve their community. Thanks to the power of success stories and anecdotes of those helped by microlending, the idea caught on with philanthropists and governments in the west. The concept enjoyed the full throated endorsement of the Clintons, The Nobel Committee, the United Nations, and experts working in global development. But a dark side of microlending quickly emerged. Some loans came with unreasonably high interest rates. Certain microlending institutions harassed and threatened those who couldn’t pay. Some of those who received small loans found themselves trapped in a debt spiral. The indebted even committed suicide to escape the loan. While this was going on, some owners of microfinance ventures profited to the tune of millions of dollars. In the 2010s, multiple studies began to discover that the benefits of microlending as a poverty cure were vastly oversold. Microloans could in fact improve a community’s economic base in certain situations. But they cannot and will not end poverty entirely, as its advocates claimed decades earlier. How did the most powerful, wealthy, and influential people in the world buy into the exaggerated promises of microlending? This is a 10-part series brought to you by the QAA podcast. Episode 195: Georgia Guidestones & Schizoposting feat Emmi Conley Jul 13, 2022
    Show notes

The mysterious monument known as the Georgia Guidestones — "America's Stonehenge" — was recently destroyed. We cover how it was built in 1980 on a grazing pasture, why it created controversy, and its eventual bombing. Then we broach Bobby Crimo III, the recent mass shooter in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park. To help us understand his digital footprint, we speak to Emmi Conley, an independent researcher of far-right extremist movements, digital propaganda and online subcultures. She discusses "schizoposting", "gore" forums and what happens when white supremacist ideology isn't a straightforward key to understanding a mass shooter's actions. Trickle Down Episode 9: Upset Tummies (Sample) Jul 02, 2022
    Show notes

For most of the 20th century, the causes of peptic ulcers were a mystery to scientists and doctors. The most popular theory was that it was a disease caused by stress. The mystery was finally unraveled in the 1980s when Australian physician Barry Marshall deliberately infected himself with the H. Pylori bacteria, got sick, and cured himself with an antibiotic treatment. The discovery that bacteria caused ulcers earned Marshall and his research partner a Nobel Prize in 2005. But why did it take so long to discover the true cause and treatment of ulcers? The answer lies in bad evidence collection methods, medical dogma that caused scientists to fully understand the evidence, and pharmaceutical companies that didn’t stand to profit from an antibiotic cure of ulcers. This resulted in many missed opportunities to discover the real cause of ulcers, and countless needlessly suffering patients and even deaths.
