Top QB/Coach Duos in the NFL: Patrick Mahomes/Andy Reid clear No. 1, but who comes next? (Football 8/13) Aug 13, 2020

Show notes

Generally speaking, if you want a good football team you have to have a solid quarterback and head coach. If you want to have a great football team, you'll likely need better than good at those two positions. On this episode, Will Brinson, Ryan Wilson and John Breech rank the top QB/coach duos in the NFL. But first, they address Sean McDermott's contract extension from the Bills (6:15) and where he fits in on the list of best coaches never to win a Super Bowl. Then, Ryan offers a quick Hard Knocks recap (18:00). If you could combine any QB and coach, regardless of current team, who are you picking (32:30)? The guys answer that before diving into a draft of the top actual QB/coach combos from around the league (47:00). Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are a match made in football heaven and the obvious top choice, but after that, it's fair game.

NFL on Saturdays this season? Quarterback Quarantine Strategy (Football 8/12) Aug 12, 2020

Show notes

A month out from kickoff and we're still speculating what the 2020 NFL season will look like. To help with that speculation, aided by some inside reporting, Jonathan Jones joins Will Brinson to break down COVID-19 related effects on the league. Could teams seriously employ a quarantine strategy among their quarterbacks (9:30)? It's an idea that's been tossed around for months as JJ addresses the validity of the approach. At the time of recording, the Big Ten and Pac 12 had not officially canceled (err, postponed) their college football seasons, but we knew it was coming...With that in mind, the guys discuss the potential for Saturday NFL games this year (19:30). Also, Jonathan explains why identifying character concerns are an even bigger emphasis than normal when deciding to sign a player during these pandemic times (33:00). Lastly, Dwayne Haskins is the guy in Washington, right (46:00)?

📬 Mailbag Monday: Best/worst draft picks over past decade, Tua Tagovailoa deserves more credit (Football 8/10) Aug 10, 2020

Show notes

Will Brinson, Ryan Wilson and John Breech get together for a football and tangent-filled Monday Mailbag. Who are some of the best non-QB draft picks of the past decade? How about the very worst selections? The guys proceed to rank grocery stores (not a listener question) before answering actual listener questions. Brinson, Wilson and Breech talk Tua Tagovailoa and the narrative at Alabama, trivia and the Hall of Fame. Ryan then flips the script and poses a parenting question of his own.

NFL opt out deadline passes, Tre'Davious White will play in 2020 (Football 8/7) Aug 07, 2020

Show notes

We're accustomed to lots of deadlines in the NFL, but this isn't one we ever expected to be talking about. The deadline for players to opt out of the 2020 season over COVID-19 concerns passed on Thursday with a few names added to the list, bringing the total to 66. Tre'Davious White was not one of those names, but he was still forced to defend himself on Twitter. There was zero reason for White to receive criticism though. The Pick Six Superfriends break down which teams were hurt the most by opt outs before addressing the same thing happening in college football. Will Brinson, Ryan Wilson and John Breech react to projected Top 10 picks Gregory Rousseau from Miami and Micah Parsons from Penn State deciding to skip the season and focus on the 2021 NFL Draft, with coronavirus looming over the sport. Oh yeah, did Derek Carr get caught with a burner account?

Non-playoff teams in 2019 that could MAKE the postseason in 2020 (Football 8/6) Aug 06, 2020

Show notes

The field has expanded, so we're guaranteed to get new playoff teams in 2020. But even beyond that, you can expect more fresh faces to the postseason party this season. Will Brinson is joined by Jared Dubin to break down the most likely teams to make the leap. It wouldn't be an episode with Dubin without bringing up the Cowboys, but they are a legitimate candidate for this list. When you add Tom Brady to the mix, your odds skyrocket, so the Bucs have to be on here as well. But who else? Are there easy answers in the AFC? Could a pair of 2004 1st-round QBs be primed to take advantage of one of the few postseason shots they have left? Those answers on this pod.

2019 playoff teams that could MISS the 2020 postseason (Football 8/5) Aug 05, 2020

Show notes

There's always turnover with playoff teams and in a year like 2020, even with an expanded field, you can expect some changes to who makes the postseason. That means teams that reached the playoffs last year, have to miss it this year and that's what Will Brinson and Josh Edwards are discussing on this episode. Will and Josh (who's a great draft analyst as well for CBSSports.com) break down projected 1st-round pick Rashod Bateman opting out of the college football season (3:45), before evaluating teams that could be bound to miss the postseason (7:35). Who fits the mold for regression more in the NFC: Seahawks or Packers? Even after an appearance in the AFC Championship game, the Titans have tons of doubters (23:15). Is that fair? The Texans lost DeAndre Hopkins and have Bill O'Brien, but BOB has made the playoffs in 4 of his 6 seasons with the franchise...Who else makes this list that you really don't want to be on?

First, Breech has some thoughts on how the league could adapt its schedule for the upcoming and unprecedented season (6:30). Wait, could this actually work!? Then, the guys dive into a variety of news including Doug Pederson testing positive for COVID-19 (34:00), Matthew Stafford and Gardner Minshew landing on the COVID list (42:30) and CJ Mosley opting out of the 2020 season (49:00). What will the impact be on all these fronts? Odell Beckham isn't so sure about an NFL season (1:01:30) and Antonio Brown is suspended for the first 8 games of the season (1:10:30)-we talk about the pair of high-profile wideouts.
