We made our way down to my old college stomping grounds in Santa Cruz CA, to sit down with @aaron_newsom , one of the founding partners behind @s.c.veteransalliance . This former Marine Veteran has taken his life long mission of serving his community and applied that mission to serving fellow Veterans in his local community since 2010.

Along with his partner Jason, they have been serving free cannabis to local veterans every month since 2011, without fail. Their mission is grounded in the idea of safe access, and that no man/woman is left behind. Tirelessly working to take care of one another in helping veterans replace pharmaceutical consumption with natural plant based medicines.

This conversation was a little bit of cannabis, and a whole lot about life. Learning acceptance of the world around you, even when it seems out of control. We discussed the idea of silence and how it can truly be revolutionary in self-discovery and healing. There is a constant underlying theme of being present in the moment, to be exactly where your feet are.

In this episode we traveled west on Hwy 299 to the notorious Humboldt community of Willow Creek to sit down with Luke @the_emerald_kid. Luke is the CEO and business mind behind the growing team at @dragon_w_matches.

This young phenom at 26 years old is a husband, father of three, holds a Bachelors in Economics / Masters in Strategic Sustainability and is a leader who is embarking on the relentless journey of cannabis entrepreneurship in the California regulated market.

We sit down to discuss his journey from once almost becoming a culinary chef to now becoming one of the lead minds behind this vibrant and committed team, all while juggling a young and growing family.

During our talks, Luke said something to me that has still stood out in my mind even today. “Knowledge without application is a waist.” Taking that idea, fueled by a deep passion for cost analysis and directly applying all his schooling into building a profitable and sustainable business in the most difficult cannabis markets in the country.

This young man faced a wall of adversity and road blocks during the permitting process. County officials would constantly modify laws/regulations, all while Luke and his team were in the middle of their permit process. Continually learning from this sequence of events he developed an aggressive and relentless relationship with local county officials.

Luke views this cannabis journey as building a project that has no end. Constantly trying to move upstream against the current on a river that has no end.

The best part of this always changing cannabis journey for Luke has been the ability to take all his closest friends and put them all on a substantial salary. “Put the right person, in the right position and learn to stay in your lane,” says Luke. “I have two ears, two eyes and one mouth, I intend to use them in that order.”

From Massachusetts to California and everywhere between, Matt has traveled all around this country both in cannabis and hemp. He has been self taught through application of research and development. Many years of failures, setbacks and falls have built this man into one of the strongest humans I know. To say his experience and spirit is refreshing and humbling, would be an understatement.

I have no idea how Jake is still standing after everything has been through over the years. No matter the amount of pain and suffering that seems to be stacked against him, He is always in good spirits. His attitude and lighthearted view of the world is contagious and refreshing.

Jake's incredible story proves that No law, No person, No act of mother nature, can stop you from the constant pursuit of your vision and legacy. No obstacle is too large to hinder you from reaching your end destination.

You can suffer, and then you can suffer some more. You can suffer harder than you ever imagined, and it will pay off.

It is actually difficult to sit down and try to wrap your mind around what has happened in only 24 months here in California since legalization.

Once you peel away all the logos and branding. Once to strip off the sugar coated perception we all portray on social media. When you sit down and speak with the men and woman behind these brands in this new regulated market.

You hear the truth of the struggle.

You can actually hear the pain of uncertainty.

Is it over for so many cannapreneurs like you and me? Is this really what the landscape of the cannabis industry has become? Is this really an end to an iconic era and culture?

I have no idea what the future holds for this plant, or the industry that surrounds her.

How you act toward the world on a daily basis is a CHOICE. How you conduct yourself in business is a CHOICE. How you react in times of stress is a CHOICE. How you handle pain and trauma is a CHOICE.

There is both light and dark in everything that we face.

But perspective is a CHOICE.

You can choose to see the negative in your current situation or you can choose to see all the good, buried beneath the rubble. Every day is an opportunity to find good in life.

Life is a revolving door of endless and ever-changing challenges stacked upon one another. Some of these challenges that we face are self-inflicted. Some of the hardships we deal with are traumatic and painful, with others to blame. Sometimes, the random exchanges of the universe come crashing down on you all at once with no explanation.

.

But the same thing remains true for all three scenarios.

.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE!

.

You can choose to be become overwhelmed and defeated by the negative in the world, or you can choose to mature, learn and grow from the adversities and challenges you face.

.

You can choose to blame everyone else in the world for all your problems, or you can choose take ownership for your own actions.

.

You can choose to sulk in the misery of your own struggle, or you can choose to rise from the depths of defeat and be grateful to even know what the struggle is.

.

Choose to stop reacting to the world around you and make the Choice to Act positively to the world around you.
