Be the Friend You Need Mar 02, 2022
    Show notes

Friendship is a verb. It requires action. Friendship requires honesty, accountability, and action. This world is too crazy to walk through alone. So if you're trying to disrupt for the greater good, you're gonna need this backup.

People tend to throw the term friendship around frivolously, but not Luvvie. In this solo episode, Luvvie expands on a conversation she started on Glennon Doyle’s podcast and discusses the critical role friends play in our lives. Luvvie shares her definition of what it means to be a friend and the weight that word carries for her and how to end a friendship in a grace-filled way. Luvvie also answers questions submitted by her audience and tackles the question of whether Black women and white women can be friends.

There's so much goodness in this episode, and we hope as a result of listening you reach out to a friend who matters to you. Investing in your relationships is something that will keep rewarding you for the rest of your life. So be the friend that you would like to have.

Listen to Lead (with Nneka Ogwumike) Feb 16, 2022
    Show notes

Leadership is a verb. And choosing to lead by listening and empowering others is a big part of that. Today’s guest Nneka Ogwumike is the definition of a Professional Troublemaker. She’s a force to be reckoned with on and off the court. Nneka is a former Number 1 WNBA draft pick, six-time WNBA All-star, and president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association. She’s passionate about fighting for Black women, athletes, and those whose voices aren't affirmed and has made speaking truth to power a life habit.

Nneka also shares the pain she felt when being passed over for the Olympic basketball team. There is a difference between just losing an award and being snubbed. And she was snubbed in this case. But Nneka continues to lead the WNBA players association with grace and dignity.

This is a powerful conversation all about listening, leading, and doing what matters most.

Loan Others Courage (with KevOnStage) Feb 09, 2022
    Show notes

Fear can easily stop you when you’re trying to do big things in the world. But when you refuse to let it get in your way and keep moving, you can create opportunities for yourself to succeed and then invite others to come alongside you.

Originally recorded as part of the virtual book tour for Professional Troublemaker in March 2021, this interview with KevOnStage AKA Kevin Fredericks was a vulnerable and hilarious conversation that needed to be shared on the podcast. Kev and Luvvie get real about each of their journeys. They talk about how they have each created opportunities for themselves and talk about some of the growing pains that follow.

    Show notes

This week on Professional Troublemaker, we are sharing an encore episode where Luvvie is in conversation with Jovian Zayne, founder of International Day of Purpose, speaker, coach, and all-around Empress of Epicness.

As a recognized thought leader in the professional development and diversity spaces, Jovian centers her work around empowering people to discover, celebrate, and activate the power within their purpose. Her mantra, “Live On Purpose”, translates across both her professional and personal lives, as Jovian uses these three words as a metric to assess the impact and value of the work she’s doing in the world and in her home as a wife and mother.

Push Forward (with Latham Thomas) Jun 08, 2021
    Show notes

We’re revisiting another conversation this week on Professional Troublemaker! Luvvie is talking to Latham Thomas - wellness maven to the stars, birth doula, and queen regent of radical self-care.

Latham is an incredible storyteller and she lets us in on how the birth of her son catapulted her into her purpose. We learn about birthing as a chemical, transformative experience and how her ancestors showed up on her behalf to guide her through the process.

This episode shines a light on the Black maternal health crisis and how racial bias, education, and economic stability all play a role in the staggering statistic of black women dying or experiencing health complications during childbirth.

Latham has committed to being a mother to mothers and holding the hands of women - literally and figuratively - as a doula during and after pregnancy. Her view that the birthing process shouldn’t be as scary and difficult as it is for women and birthing people in this country is what fuels her work spotlighting this global crisis.

She has joined forces with Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter, to model advocacy for Black Maternal Health through an initiative called Love Delivered. You can learn more about their work and how to stand alongside them by visiting mamaglowfoundation.org and carolsdaughter.com/lovedelivered
