90s Tooth & Nail Records Tournament Sep 10, 2024

MxPx. Slick Shoes. Project 86. Plankeye. Craig's Brother. Dogwood. Starflyer 59.

Chances are good that these band names either 1) mean nothing at all to you, which makes you an average American, or 2) meant EVERYTHING to you for a few years of your life and probably still mean something. The rest of you have probably heard MxPx, but maybe nobody else on this list. For my longtime friend and guest Jon Havens and I, these bands meant pretty much everything to us at one point, and although we've moved on from most of them musically (not all of them!), listening back through the 90s catalog of Seattle Christian indie record label Tooth & Nail was the perfect excuse to revisit the years of our early friendship. We were Christian rock subculture kids, spending a lot of time at Evangelical youth group and swapping discs we got at Berean or Lifeway Christian Bookstore. And how did we not talk AT ALL about using rotary phone cords as wallet chains...? Listen as we pit 16 of these artists against each other in a bracket-style tournament.

Soundtrack Shootout: Pulp Fiction v. Forrest Gump May 07, 2024

Two music-centric films. Two different generations. Both released in 1994, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction call upon the same period of popular music but in distinctly different ways (with very different budgets). Michael Parker (Pickwick) and I try out a new episode format -- you could say we take it for a spin in a vintage Chevy while enjoying an overpriced milkshake -- where we pit the soundtracks against each other, track by track. We also talk about the films a bit. And we hear some GREAT songs.

We're trying out a new episode style, which on-air I called "Sugar, We're Throwin' Down" but in the future, I will probably refer to it as "David vs. Goliath." At any rate, it was my guest David Stuart's idea and basic structure, and I love it! He brought in a favorite and underrated album, The Starting Line's "Direction," which competed head-to-head with the winner of an 8-album mini-tournament of established emo/punk releases from that same year. MTV Buzz Bin Shootout Aug 08, 2023

As my guest (Joe Greenetz of Sherwood) explains, for two glorious years in the mid-late 1990s, the Music Television channel put out compilation albums of new songs by breaking artists, most of them firmly in the rock/alternative realm. And, frankly, the people deserve to know definitively which of the two volumes is the superior collection. So we had no choice but to test out a new episode style/game, basically a soccer penalty kick-type "shootout," track competing against track. No one cares about these compilations anymore, but plenty of people still adore these songs, including tracks by Counting Crows, Cake, Stone Temple Pilots, Nada Surf, and more.

Warped Tour '04 Tournament May 16, 2023

What were you doing in August of 2004? I'll tell you what my guest Joe Greenetz and I were doing: sweating it out on the Vans Warped Tour with our band Sherwood. Joe and I give some brief context of our experience that summer before launching into an efficient 16-artist bracket focused on bands we heard daily walking the festival grounds, regretfully guzzling free-to-artists Monster energy drinks (I have not taken a single sip in the last 19 years). This was the first tournament episode I recorded, about 7 months ago, so there were still some kinks to be worked out, but the listening experience should nonetheless be fun! Josh Cain (Motion City Soundtrack) joins me to talk through the history of emo, originally known as "emo-core," a genre that traces its origins to the hardcore scene of Washington D.C. in the mid-80s. We start there, moving chronologically up through 1994, with a special emphasis on Midwest emo and proto-emo bands.
