80s Punk Tournament (Part 1, with Sam Tallent) May 23, 2023

Show notes

Grab a 6-pack (or don’t if you’re Straight Edge) and get in the van! Your buddy’s copy of Book Your Own Fucking Life doesn’t have too many pages stuck together, and it looks like there’s just enough gas to get to Bakersfield for tonight’s basement show. Comedian Sam Tallent joins me as we pit songs by Black Flag, Bad Brains, Descendents, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, and more against each other in a winner-takes-the-only-clean-towel tournament. This music has played a massive role in Sam’s life, and this conversation contains both lots of laughter and some pretty heartfelt moments. Part 2 drops next week.

Warped Tour '04 Tournament May 16, 2023

Show notes

What were you doing in August of 2004? I'll tell you what my guest Joe Greenetz and I were doing: sweating it out on the Vans Warped Tour with our band Sherwood. Joe and I give some brief context of our experience that summer before launching into an efficient 16-artist bracket focused on bands we heard daily walking the festival grounds, regretfully guzzling free-to-artists Monster energy drinks (I have not taken a single sip in the last 19 years). This was the first tournament episode I recorded, about 7 months ago, so there were still some kinks to be worked out, but the listening experience should nonetheless be fun! Also, I edited this quickly myself, so please forgive any blips or boops or pops or weird edits. There is also some overlap with the "Scene Radio" episode, which was recorded later. Bands include Coheed and Cambria, Thursday, Alkaline Trio, NOFX, Underoath, Bad Religion, Yellowcard, Rise Against, and more.

Dad's Tape Deck: Comedian Simon Gibson May 09, 2023

Show notes

The Rolling Stones, Broken Social Scene, LCD Soundsystem, Aerosmith, and other artists populate the musical memory of comedian Simon Gibson (Cannonball, Inside Jokes), whose father was a local musician in Portland, OR throughout Simon’s early life. We also hear the soundtrack to his early-2000s move to Los Angeles to pursue comedy and about the friends who helped him see the value in digging deeper to find great music.

Walk Me Through: Jesus Movement Music '67-'79 (Part 2) May 02, 2023

Show notes

*This is part 2 - check part 1 from last week!*

Ever wondered how White Evangelical Protestants got the way they are? The music that generation created played an outsized role in the formation of their subculture, one that would come to dominate a large chunk of American sociopolitics in the coming 6 decades. And you know what? Some of it rules. (Some emphatically does not.) Lindsay Strannigan (Holy Ghosting Podcast, formerly of The Militia Group) joins me to break down this movement from a musicological angle over two parts, focusing on music released between 1967 and 1979, right up to the moment when Contemporary Christian Music truly emerges as its own cultural force (for better and for worse).

Convince Me: Nu-Metal Has Any Value At All (with The Classic Crime) Apr 18, 2023

Show notes

Today we hear arguments in The United States vs. Nu-Metal. So de-tune your guitars, turn your hats backward, put up an ad at Guitar Center that says “Rap-rock band looking for DJ to fill out our sound,” and find something to break! A soundtrack of Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Korn, and even Rage Against the Machine (do they count??) dots the landscape of a surprisingly astute and sociology-heavy case made by my guests Matt MacDonald (The Classic Crime) and James Wightman (also kind of The Classic Crime) that, indeed, nu metal has inherent value. Let’s see if you agree!

Emo/Punk "Scene" Radio Tournament (Part 2) Apr 11, 2023

Show notes

Part 2 is here! (Part 1 aired last week)

Get comfortable, focus on your breath, slowly close your eyes, and imagine you are looking at a Hot Topic wall of band t-shirts circa 2008: My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, Yellowcard, The All-American Rejects, The Used, Dashboard Confessional. It used to just be you and your friends who knew bands like this, but now you hear them every time you turn on the radio in your 1999 Toyota Camry (which doesn't have a working CD player, hence the radio). The Plain White T's own Mike Retondo joins me to pit these bands against each other in a March Madness-style bracket tournament, as well as to share with me what is was like for his own band to enjoy worldwide radio success with "Hey There, Delilah."
