Happy Class Week 35: Finding Flow Jun 09, 2023
    Show notes

This week I found the flow in my capstone research, quadrupling the work I completed last week. It is a good reminder that sometimes we need to get in the pool far enough to be able to swim.

Fingers crossed I am turning in a mostly-complete draft this weekend!

#242: Summer Plans and Planters Jun 08, 2023
    Show notes

It is that time again: kids finish school and we're left with three months of blank calendar wondering how to build a memorable, easy, fulfilling summertime. In this episode I use a classic planter rule of thirds to help me plan a great summertime with my kids: thrill, fill, and spill. Originally episode 149, this show can help you figure out a great, personalized summer rhythm for you, too!

    #241: Thinking Traps Jun 01, 2023

One of my favorite lectures this last year was about thinking traps-- these holes in our cognition that don't make sense, aren't helpful, but swallow us whole anyway. This episode shares some of the research about thinking traps, some examples that may sound familiar, as well as ideas for getting out!

Happy Class Week 33: Capstone Time! May 26, 2023
    Show notes

I have taken a whole week break since graduation, and this week I am back at it! Capstone time begins now. My capstone project will consist of a deep-dive into the research around the benefits of creativity in order to write a robust literature review. Beyond the academic paper, I am creating a book proposal for my next non-fiction book about everyday creativity.

Here are the 10 books about creativity I mentioned in the episode:

    1. "Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi - Explores the concept of flow and how it relates to creativity, offering insights into the creative process.
    2. "Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear" by Elizabeth Gilbert - Encourages readers to embrace their creativity, overcome fear, and lead a more inspired and fulfilling life.
    3. "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron - A renowned guidebook for nurturing creativity and unblocking artistic potential through a twelve-week program of self-discovery and creative exercises.
    4. "Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant - Explores the characteristics and behaviors of original thinkers and provides insights on how to champion new ideas and drive meaningful change.
    5. "Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative" by Austin Kleon - Offers unconventional advice and inspiration for embracing creativity, encouraging readers to borrow from other artists and find their unique creative voice.
    6. "Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All" by Tom Kelley and David Kelley - Written by the founders of IDEO, this book explores how to unlock and nurture creativity in individuals and organizations.
    7. "The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles" by Steven Pressfield - Examines the challenges and resistance faced by creative individuals and provides strategies for overcoming obstacles and unlocking creative potential.
    8. "Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking" by David Bayles and Ted Orland - Explores the psychological and emotional aspects of the creative process and addresses common fears and obstacles faced by artists.
    9. "Imagine: How Creativity Works" by Jonah Lehrer - Investigates the science and psychology behind creativity, offering insights into the creative process and strategies for cultivating creative thinking.
    10. "The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life" by Twyla Tharp - Provides practical advice and exercises for developing creative habits, enhancing productivity, and fostering long-term creativity.

Bonus. "Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood" by Ashlee Gadd is part pep talk, part permission slip. This book honors both the mothering journey and our God-given desires to create.

#239: More Is Not Better May 18, 2023
    Show notes

We are inclined to believe that if a little is good, more must be better. However, according to research, that isn't necessarily true. Most things (including exercise, money, stress) are good in some amount, but unhelpful and even dangerous in OVER abundance. The truth is this: more isn't always better. What a relief! Tune in to listen to some examples and feel a little bit better about your life today!
