Emergency Communication and First Aid: GMRS Radios, IFAKs, and PFAKs Oct 12, 2026
    Show notes

Cell phones are great until service disappears, batteries die, or your group gets separated. In this episode, we explain how GMRS radios can help families, campers, off-road groups, farms, neighborhoods, and small teams stay connected during emergencies. We compare GMRS with FRS, discuss licensing, channels, repeaters, privacy codes, range expectations, and common radio types. We also cover the important difference between an IFAK and a PFAK. An IFAK is built for serious trauma and life-threatening bleeding, while a PFAK handles everyday first aid needs like cuts, scrapes, blisters, headaches, and minor injuries. Practical gear, clearly explained.

Our Personal Everyday Carry Handgun Setups, And The ReadyFam App Sep 21, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, we break down two personal everyday carry setups. Krista shares why she carries the Smith and Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ, and Mark discusses his Springfield RDP 9mm. We also talk with Adam Baker, cofounder of ReadyFam.app, about using technology to organize emergency preparedness supplies, track expiration dates, and build a better family preparedness plan.

Krista’s everyday carry handgun is the Smith and Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ, chambered in 380 ACP. She chose it because the slide is easy to rack, which matters because she has some arthritis and struggled with a stiffer slide on a previous handgun. The Shield EZ also has easy load magazines, an eight round magazine with eight plus one capacity, a grip safety, and an optional ambidextrous thumb safety.

Inflation Busting Ideas: Practical Ways to Save Money and Prepare for Inflation or Recession Sep 14, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode of Practical Prepping, we discuss practical inflation busting ideas to help you stretch your money and prepare for uncertain economic times. As groceries, gas, utilities, medication, and everyday essentials continue to cost more, many families are feeling real pressure on their budgets. We talk about three basic ways to deal with inflation and recession concerns: having more money, increasing income, and reducing expenses.

We share realistic ideas for side gigs, budgeting, tracking expenses, building an emergency fund, cutting impulse spending, reviewing subscriptions, buying second hand, using coupons, cooking at home, growing some of your own food, reducing energy use, and attacking high interest debt. Preparedness is not just about gear and supplies. It is also about financial resilience and making wise choices before a crisis hits. If rising prices are squeezing your household, this episode offers simple, practical steps to help you save money, reduce stress, and stay prepared.

Prepping for People Who Live Alone or Whose Spouse Cannot Help Sep 07, 2026
    Show notes

Preparedness advice often assumes there are multiple capable adults in the home, but that is not always reality. Some people live alone, and others have a spouse who may be out of town, sick, injured, caring for others, or unable to help during a crisis.

In this episode, we talk about building an emergency plan that works when you are the only functioning adult available. You will learn how to create a simple check-in plan, use written checklists, arrange supplies so they are easy to reach, prepare medical information, think through transportation backups, and include pets in your plan.

What to Do When an Emergency Happens Away From Home Aug 31, 2026
    Show notes

What happens if an emergency starts while you are not home? In this episode, we discuss the often-overlooked problem of being away from your supplies when roads close, cell service slows, or your family is separated. We cover how to assess whether to stay, move nearby, or go home, and why a get-home plan is really a transportation, communication, and reunification plan. We also discuss everyday carry, vehicle kits, work bags, school pickup plans, public transit concerns, paper maps, and the half-tank fuel rule. Preparedness is not just what you store at home. It is also the decisions, tools, and plans that help you respond wherever you are.

Extreme Heat Preparedness: How to Stay Safe and Cool During Extreme Heat Aug 24, 2026
    Show notes

Today’s episode of Practical Prepping focuses on staying safe during extreme heat, especially if the air conditioner goes out or you have to be outside. We discuss practical ways to stay cooler and reduce the risk of heat-related problems.

Start with hydration. Drink water regularly and avoid too much caffeine or alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration. Use battery-powered fans, handheld fans, or neck fans, and keep extra batteries ready. Cool wet towels, cooling cloths, or damp washcloths placed on the neck, wrists, or forehead can help lower body temperature. Cool showers or baths can also provide relief.

Inside the home, use nighttime cooling, cross-ventilation, and fans to move air. Stay on lower floors or in the basement if possible. Close off unused rooms, use ice packs or frozen bottles in front of fans, and avoid heat-generating cooking. Plan cold meals and know where local cooling centers are.

The Core Categories Every Prepper Should Cover Aug 17, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, we look at the major categories of prepping and why balance matters. Preparedness is more than food, firearms, or gear. We discuss starting with the needs that apply to nearly every emergency, including water, food, finances, first aid, sanitation, shelter, lighting, power, communications, safety, and security.

We share some practical advice on avoiding debt, building emergency savings, storing shelf stable foods, purifying water, preparing get home bags, and developing useful skills.

We hope this helps new and experienced preppers identify weak spots, avoid tunnel vision, and build a more complete, realistic preparedness plan.

Survival Uses for Ordinary Office Supplies Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

Preparedness is not only about buying specialized gear. It is also about recognizing how everyday items can solve urgent problems when normal systems fail. In this episode, we look at ordinary office supplies and the practical survival uses hidden in desks, break rooms, mailrooms, and supply closets. From paper, tape, binder clips, and trash bags to furniture, cardboard, cleaning supplies, and electronics, this is a guide to improvisation where people actually spend much of their time. If an emergency happens at work, the most useful tools may already be around you, if you know how to see them differently.
