    Episode 379- Jane Handcock @handcockjay Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with singer/songwriter Jane Handcock.
Oakland, California R&B songwriter Jane Handcock steps out from behind the scenes into her own artistry. Handcock has worked with many household names in the music business, including Kelly Rowland, Tyrese, Tank, Big KRIT, Keke Palmer and more, along with award winning producers Teddy Riley, Justice League, Harmony Samuels, James Fauntleroy, 1500 or Nothin, Sir Dylan and Polow tha Don, as well as with close friend and writing partner, Adrian Marcel. It was at OSA (Oakland School for the Arts) where she met fellow classmate Marcel. While working on Adrian Marcel’s debut project, “7 Days of Weak”, Handcock had the opportunity to collaborate with Award winning singer, songwriter, producer Raphael Saadiq. Saadiq was impressed with her vivid confessional lyricism. He was intrigued by her ability to not only write honest music that touched people but the very special ability to empathize. He said her level of empathy made the songs she writes for others even more heartwarming [“she’s like a musical medium.”]. Her collaborations with Saadiq and Marcel led Handcock to write and vocal produce Marcel’s breakout hit “2 AM” & Rick Ross’ “Apple of My Eye” (from his latest album ‘Rather You Than Me’, which she also sings under with Saadiq’s smooth tone). Now, Handcock begins to emerge as an artist herself, ‘Truth Be Told’ and ‘TEA’ immediately show you why some of the all time greats are so eager to work with this rising star.

    Episode 376 - MoRuf | @MoRuf88 Dec 20, 2019
    Show notes

Hip-Hop in its truest form, is poetry, it’s a more reflective view on situations in culture, politics, and it often expresses the artists’ opinion on everyday life. Due to hip-hop’s growing popularity and commercialization, much of that authenticity and artistry has been lost. But then there’s the exception, raised in a small town in New Jersey, called Irvington, MoRuf Adewunmi, better know as MoRuf. Has managed to grow a cult-like following by just being honest, with clever rhymes, and a storytelling ability that remind you of young “Mighty Mos”.
It’s safe to say, that his movement: L.O.E., which stands for Love Over Everything, is a return to the golden era of Hip-Hop, when the size of your chain, meant nothing, and the focus was spreading positivity to the masses. To say MoRuf is a breath of fresh air, would be rather cliché, let’s say he’s artist in every sense of the word; reflective, thought provoking, yet entertaining. Bless up!

Growing up in Hackensack, NJ, Oneika found the best way to express herself was through writing poems, thoughts, feelings, and the many things she had observed. She realized her God given gift, when she began to sing in church, it is where she noticed the strength in her voice. To sing on a stage in a crowded room filled with people, was the dream Oneika held on to. As years go by, her dream became so small as she started to think her deepest desires were to never happen. However, at the age of 21, after dropping out of college, Oneika faced a heartache that returned her back to singing and songwriting. She then decided to use her gift to tell stories, to inspire others, and speak to souls using her gift from God.

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with Zakiyyah.
Long before being introduced to the awe-inspiring world of Opera, Zakiyyah was singing along to the mesmerizing sounds of Patti Labelle, New Birth, and Smokey Robinson that beamed from her parents’ stereos. In that Boston-home, she inherited the bold, socially-conscious values that cultivated her into the profound, luring artist and activist that she is today.
After graduating from Wellesley College with a Political Science and Sociology degree in 2012, Zakiyyah continued her vocal studies at New England Conservatory and landed the lead role in an original musical entitled “This is Treatment” soon after. In 2016, she spent a year pursuing her artistic and scholastic ambitions in Czech Republic, Thailand, South Africa, and Colombia, where she learned about music from around the world, and worked with local artists—including Grammy-nominated group Explosión Negra. Her debut album, African Import, promises to be a continuation of the distinctive excellence that propelled her artistry into the ground-breaking force that the world will soon cherish.

    Episode 371 - Durand Bernarr | @durandbernarr Dec 01, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with singer/songwriter Durand Bernarr,
Yup! When you think of the artist also known as “alcoholharmony”, there are so many facets and descriptions that come to mind. One thing, however, will continuously stand out amongst all and that is the fact that he can SANG. No...not sing. SANG! Not convinced? Well, allow your mind to be open and follow the journey of one of the music industry’s anti-industry best kept secret!
Durand not only grew up in a home where his mother was a professional music teacher and vocal coach, but his father has also worked to provide sound and tour production to some of the greats such as Jill Scott, Jay-Z, Adele, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the late Whitney Houston. Durand has had the opportunity from childhood to sit under, collaborate, and learn from some of music’s leading legends and contributors such as: Earth, Wind & Fire (yes...all of them), The Internet, Maxwell, Sarah Vaughan, Chaka Khan, Cameo, the Foreign Exchange, YahZarah, and comedian Rickey Smiley. Not to mention, he IS the adopted stepson of Erykah Badu (no...not literally, but you get what we mean). Erykah Badu not only heard his second project which he dedicated to her entitled ‘8ight: The Stepson of Erykah Badu’, but she sought him out AND invited him to join her on tour as a part of her band, Neda Stella, which he still tours with today.
Most recently he was the breakout star of BET’s music competition show, The Next Big Thing and had his hit single Around showcased in BET’s hot new revamp of Boomerang. He’s also dubbed by Lena Waithe in Variety magazine as one of the artists she’s into. “Durand Bernarr is an amazing artist that kills it all the time” With a voice like melted butter and the stage presence like warm cornbread to match. Durand has set out to make sure that not only can he share his music worldwide, but his fans leave his shows and album experiences with a piece of him.
