    Polite Conversations

Growing up in Saudi Arabia as a Pakistani, who now resides in Canada, Eiynah brings a global perspective to discussions about religion, politics, culture & sexuality – through the lens of a progressive ex-muslim immigrant. This podcast often focuses on unpacking various forms of extremism, particularly types that are less overt and masquerading as ‘intellectual’. Eiynah has a specific interest in covering online scenes like New Atheism and the Intellectual Dark Web.

Dan Savage on Milo Feb 20, 2017
    Show notes

A few weeks ago, before Milo's Real Time Appearance, and before his pedophilia-defending stuff surface in the mainstream. I had a wonderful conversation with Dan Savage - one of the topics we touched upon was Milo Yiannopolous. Dan rightly describes him as the attention-seeking, identity politicking, disingenuous hack that he is. This is just a snippet of our conversation. Episode 26 - Life in Saudi w/Ali Rizvi "The Atheist Muslim" Feb 17, 2017
    Show notes

Join me and my good friend Ali Rizvi for a conversation about Life in Saudi Arabia. Ali and I share a very similar geographical background. We both grew up as Pakistani expats in Saudi in fairly liberal Muslim families. It’s always fun to compare notes…We discuss his early years in school, how snowflakes are secret code for The Star of David :P , we talk about the differences between the Shia experience and the Sunni one & reminisce about Betamax, Ramadan TV shows like Full House, Small Wonder, Punky Brewster. The ex-muslim community has grown, and with that comes some differences in approach….the disadvantages of ’the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ type of tactics. Overall, Ali put me in a really hopeful and optimistic mood about how attitudes around apostasy are changing, how irreligiosity in even countries like Saudi Arabia is growing. Here is a link to the gallup poll he referenced http://www.wingia.com/web/files/news/14/file/14.pdfWe touched briefly upon the subject of creationism in public schools in the US, but I found that there are some instances where people to get away with teaching it: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2014/01/creationism_in_public_schools_mapped_where_tax_money_supports_alternatives.htmlCheck out Ali's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Atheist-Muslim-Journey-Religion-Reason/dp/1250094445----If you enjoy the show, please consider supporting via patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nicemangosLeave an iTunes review: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/polite-conversations/id1086199663?mt=2

Episode 25 - Life in Saudi Arabia: Burqas & Bras Feb 06, 2017
    Show notes

Join me for the second interview in my 'life in Saudi Arabia' series. I chat with a Saudi feminist now based in the UK, about her life growing up, the first time she put an a'abaya (modesty cloak thing) on, the strange contradictions of living in a theocracy in the 21st century. We also discussed what Saudi feminism entails, and touched upon the subject of female migrant worker rights in Saudi. Moudhy expands her thoughts further in a blogpost: https://asaudiabroad.com/2017/02/05/toward-a-more-inclusive-feminism/The blogpost where Moudhy talks about her first time putting on an a'abaya: https://asaudiabroad.com/2017/01/06/my-first-time/#more-318Follow her on twitter @Moudhy

(This Episode was recorded before the inauguration) Join me and Dan Savage for an honest conversation about the Left's response to minorities within minorities like ex muslims, even muslims who are critical of things like homophobia, misogyny within their religion. It's a tough spot, but we've got to start discussing this fellow liberals! We also chat about the glorification of hijab, Milo, germophobia, golden showers & much more! Dan is a personal hero of mine. It was such an honour to speak with him. Episode 23: Life in Saudi Arabia - #StopEnslavingSaudiWomen Jan 19, 2017
    Show notes

Join me and Saudi Activist Moudhi (@Moudhi90) as we talk about life in Saudi Arabia. She studied Sharia Law, so she has some pretty shocking insights about the Saudi legal system. I mean, I knew it was bad, but its still shocking to hear it all the same. I grew up as an expat in a Western compound in Saudi.....always segregated from locals...so even though Ive had the occasional short conversation with Saudis, this was my first *ever* proper, in depth conversation. It's interesting to compare notes with an actual Saudi because our experiences differ so greatly. Moudhi is a very brave and inspiring woman. She first caught my attention when I saw her in a CNN clip:https://twitter.com/CNN/status/821076687458799616----if you enjoy this show please consider supporting it via Patreon. Episode 22 - Irshad Manji Jan 04, 2017
    Show notes

Join me and Irshad for a wonderful conversation, where we both nudge and challenge each other. Despite some pretty fundamental differences (belief vs. disbelief), Irshad has always been an inspiration to me. She is someone I admire a great deal, even if we don't always agree. In her compassion and open mindedness towards others with differing viewpoints she sets an excellent example on how we can build bridges. Her warmth towards and solidarity with Ex Muslims is something we desperately need more of!Coming from an atheist perspective, I still realise that not everyone can be realistically expected to abandon belief and religion... for that reason, I think supporting genuine, honest reformists is incredibly important. We need people both leading the way outside the framework of religion and also those carving out a more modern path within that framework. Through these combined methods we can begin to chip away at fundamentalism and orthodoxy.Irshad's books are available here: https://www.amazon.ca/Irshad-Manji-Books/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n%3A916520%2Cp_27%3AIrshad%20ManjiWe mention a clip from Irshad's wedding : https://www.facebook.com/pg/irshadmanji/videos/?ref=page_internal Find out more about the Moral Courage Project here: http://moralcourage.com/

    Episode 19 - Robert Spencer Nov 27, 2016
    Show notes

Dear listeners, My apologies for the delayed release. This past week I have lost a childhood friend as well as a close relative. So I've been traveling, and things have been up in the air for a while. Robert has tweeted about this as some sort of plot to edit him to look bad... I can assure you that the content is pretty much unedited. I usually obsessively remove umms and Ahs.. but i even let most of those be for this episode. I may have taken out some dead air or repeated words, but thats about it. I hope you enjoy! Here are some links discussed in the episode: Robert's take on Reza Aslan (where he refers to Reza as 'Islamic Supremacist boy': https://www.jihadwatch.org/2012/09/national-iranian-american-council-confirmed-as-front-group-for-irans-islamic-regime" Reza Aslan exposed: National Iranian American Council confirmed as front group for Iran’s bloody Islamic regime"--Robert casting further suspicion on Maajid: https://www.jihadwatch.org/2016/11/muslim-reformist-maajid-nawaz-declares-support-for-muslim-brotherhood-linked-congressman-keith-ellison"Muslim reformist Maajid Nawaz declares support for Muslim Brotherhood-linked Congressman Keith Ellison”--US bloggers banned from entering UK http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-23064355--EDL isn't as Benign and non-racist as its defenders make it out to be - Here's a clip of Tommy standing with someone shouting "send the black cunts home" and not really objecting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=schEGyZ8K-Q--Article by Cathy Young: "In Pam Geller's world everybody Jihads" http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/05/10/in-pam-geller-s-world-everybody-jihads.html--Homoeconomicus blog piece on Robert Spencer's Srebrenica genocide denial rebuttal: https://homoeconomicusnet.wordpress.com/2013/10/15/robert-spencer-responds-on-srebrenica/a comment on this piece shows the pg numbers Robert has not cited in his case against the word 'genocide' " SuadaNovember 5, 2013 at 12:44 pmSpencer response shows his acedemic dishonesty and lack of professional integrety. In addition to your points (as you say, he goes far beyond simply qestioning the usage of the term ‘genocide’), Spencer cites Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal article by Katherine G. Southwick. However, he doesn’t mention what Southwick really says (pp. 193-194);‘In the spring of 1995, the Bosnian Serbs planned to attack Srebrenica definitively. Radovan Karadzić, President of Republika Srpska, issued a directive to the VRS forces to “complete the physical separation of Srebrenica from Zepa as soon as possible, preventing even communication between individuals in the two enclaves. By planned and well-thought out combat operations, create an unbearable situation of total insecurity with no hope of further survival or life for the inhabitants of Srebrenica.” This was an order to ethnically cleanse Srebrenica.
