Episode 37 | A "chat" with Rob Mark (Flying Magazine, JetWhine) about ATC Jan 22, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Show. What happens when a couple of guys with a double sided long view get together and start talking shop about something important to them?

So, a little about Rob. As if you didn't know, he's the senior editor at Flying Magazine. You've all heard him for years on Airplane Geeks, and on his own JetWhine production at Jetwhine.com.

He's a journalism Alum @Northwestern University, and this is where our story takes a fun turn. I don't think either one of us knew how much we had in common!

My Wife went to Northwestern. And I went to Purdue. I flew up there a lot to visit, and I always flew into PWK airport. Now "Chicago Executive" whatever.

A lot of people don't know this, but Rob used to be a Controller too.

His office is something I've probably driven past 100 times in Evanston.

It looks like our careers are following a strikingly similar path so far.

Him and I have gone back and forth before, and he's even recorded a piece for this show called "the scariest takeoff I ever made" (Episode 023).

Cool. But there's still the matter of this whole "chat" thing. It's probably time we get that sorted out…

Concorde Week | The crash of Air France 4590 Jan 22, 2022
    Show notes

John's Book: Wind Beneath my Wings

In today's final episode, We hear the story of what really brought down Air France flight 4590, the only Concorde ever to crash, and widely regarded as the end of the Concorde program.

The figurative and literal demise of Concorde is often referred to as a travesty, and not just to us aviation types. Businesspeople and wealthy globetrotters all were sad to see it go, the general populace of England And France lost an Icon of their countries abilities, and I think we can all agree that ending the program is akin to taking a giant metaphorical step backwards.

Unfortunately though, there's nothing you and I can do to bring Concorde back, but I think it's important that we all know the real story behind what happened that fateful day in July 2000, and why Concorde was pulled from service the way it was.

He becomes known to the royal family, and of all the rich, famous, and powerful people he flew across the pond in his 15 year Concorde Captaincy, John has one who stands out to this day, and he tells us who that is, and why.

Episode 31 | Max Trescott | Cirrus Accident Case Studies Jan 22, 2022
    Show notes

Today we're going to pick apart a couple of Cirrus crashes, but not just any cirrus crashes. These are serious fatal accidents. In each case, the accident aircraft had a pilot plus 2 passengers. And the reason Max and I are talking about these In particular, is because ATC played an interesting part in each one. Not necessarily a causal one, as we'll see from the NTSB reports, but the interactions with ATC were key in one way or another in the events leading up to the occurrence. And that's, of course, where our worlds overlap!

Max Trescott is a fulltime flight instructor. He started flying at age 15 and finished his pilot certificate in college. He has degrees in Electrical Engineering, Psychology, and a MBA. He spent 25 years working in sales and marketing for Hewlett-Packard.

In 2004 he left HP and he now devotes full time to teaching flying, writing, and giving speeches and seminars. He's written two books, including Max Trescott's G1000 Glass Cockpit Handbook, now in its fifth edition. He holds an ATP certificate for all four airplane categories.

Max specializes in teaching in Cirrus Aircraft and a week ago he finished his type-rated in the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet. In 2008, he was named by the FAA as the National Certificated Flight Instructor of the Year to represent the 96,000 flight instructors in the U.S.

He has a weekly podcast focused on General Aviation in which he shares GA news from around the world plus pilot skills and safety tips. The show is Aviation News Talk, and you can find it in the Apple App store and Google Play Store or wherever you get your podcasts.
