Is this the best parent/kid movie we've discussed on the podcast? Maybe! We talk about this movie's chaotic structure, and try to figure out why it works so well for us, as well as it's abrupt ending that beat The Sopranos to the chase. We also discuss David Strathairn's career, from our love of his kind persona, to our anger toward his lack of an Oscar.

Show notes

Making her first appearance in two years, Erin La Rosa returns to the podcast to discuss the original ensemble romance, PLAYING BY HEART.

We also dive down a rabbit hole of MMA culture, Q-Anon conspiracists, and Y2K doomsday preppers (Really, anything to avoid talking about this milktoast film), and for the second week in a row, rip apart Crazy Stupid Love!

186: Smashing Pumpkins: The Everlasting Gaze w/ Matthew D'Ambrosio Aug 27, 2021

Show notes

Do you remember when we still had to listen to music on discs and cassettes? Before Spotify and Napster? This week, Phil is joined by fellow writer Matthew D'Ambrosio (The Witcher, The Vampire Diaries) to discuss one of the most influential bands of the 90s, SMASHING PUMPKINS.

We dig through the band's storied discography in an attempt to track their fall from relevance. We also discuss Billy Corgan's fatal flaws, the highs and lows of their career, and list off our favorite SP songs. Plus, you get to hear Phil say "I had a CD player, you son of a bitch", so this episode is an all around win.

185: The Very Thought of You w/ Clay Keller Aug 20, 2021

Show notes

Prepare yourself for "The best romantic comedy ever" according to Daily Mail. That's right, we're talking about Nottin- wait...not Notting Hill? The Very Thought of You? I'm not convinced this movie actually exists, but here is our episode on THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU with Screen Draft's Clay Keller!

We discuss Clay's obsession with Monica Potter, and how most of her career flew under everyone's radar. We also discuss the worst of the worst 90s tropes, including portraying assholishness as hot, and focusing on unique storytelling instead of GOOD storytelling. We explore some of 1999's best twists, and how this movie strived to make that list, but fell completely short. Finally, we try to pick out what unique pieces of American culture would be interesting to the brits. Stay tuned to the end of Clay's take on Carrie, and Kenny's take on Brian De Palma!
