Phil and Kenny are joined on the podcast this week by director and animator Miguel Jiron (Into the Spiderverse) to discuss - yawn - Hiyao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke." We have some real slogs in 1999, but few are as rote as this one, folks. It's a story you've heard a million times. Boy kills giant hog imbued with a demon spirit. The spirit gets inside him and gives him, you guessed it, superhuman strength but, yup, is also going to kill him. In an effort to find a cure, he encounters a wolf goddess and her human daughter, San. I know, grow an imagination, Miyazaki. Of course, they don't fall in love, but grow to have a mutual respect for each other, like pretty much every story about a young man and woman in traumatic circumstances. That says nothing of the other mundane things he runs into, like your cliched group of bandaged of lepers manufacturing firearms or the tree spirits who probably hold the secret to all life on earth. On top of that, visually it looks like a Monet come to life and populated with best and worst living dreams and nightmares of a opium eater. Like every other fucking movie ever. Well, we said we'd do every movie, so here's Princess Mononoke for you.

Of what use is Martin Lawrence's portrayal of diamond-thief-cum-imposter-police-officer when compared to Sid James' legendary work in the original?

For whom is the easy chemistry between Lawrence and co-star Luke Wilson, when anybody could type "The Big Job" into any steaming service and relive the timeless, oft-quoted repartee between Mr. James and Dick Emery?

And which constituency was crying out to have the masterful scene where Mr. James disguises himself as a Italian food courier - replete with those classic wonky British dentures - reenacted by Mr. Lawrence?

"Blue Streak" is, on own merits, a perfectly cromulent caper. But it is rendered obsolete in a society like ours, for, as everyone knows, "The Big Job" is cultural touchstone for families the world over.

In remaking a timeless classic like "The Big Job," moviegoers in 1999 likely wondered if Hollywood had simply run out of new ideas. Fortunately, it did not portend a permanent problem for the film industry.

And we'll be further damned if she didn't get Phil and Kenny to see beyond the lack of theme park-ready set pieces and find a warm, tender, beautiful and sad movie at its core.

Sometimes you open a present and it's not what you want, but it's what you need. And, maybe in 1999, the world needed "Tarzan."

And then they were down to three contestants in the Mr. Podcast Like its 1999 pageant: Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and Jarett Wieselman (Netflix Social). With all three men tied, it would come down to their answers in the interview portion. Phil went first and his question was: "If you were stuck on a desert island, what one movie from 1999 would you take with you and why is it Drop Dead Gorgeous?" But Phil protested that it would actually be either Magnolia, The Straight Story or Toy Story 2 - depending upon who was asking the question - and was eliminated from competition. Kenny was up next and was asked: "Which character from Drop Dead Gorgeous do you most relate to?" But when Kenny responded it was Denise Richard's character Becky Ann Leeman, the booing and hissing was so loud it drowned out the remainder of his answer and he was awarded zero points. Finally, Jarett was asked: "Why isn't Drop Dead Gorgeous available on any streaming service in the world?" Jarett went into a violent rage and murdered everyone as a homage to Drop Dead Gorgeous, leaving the judges no choice but to award Mr. Podcast Like It's 1999 to... Kirsten Dunst!

Just in time for the Fourth of July, Podcast Like It's 1999 brings you 1999's Most American film! Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and TV Writer Jim Campolongo (Station 19, White Collar) take a big, old Red, White and Blue dive into the world of... snuff films? Wait, what? We're releasing the snuff movie on Independence Day? (Well, let's see if we can make this work using my questionable understanding of the American Revolution almost entirely gleaned from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton..) Nicolas Cage plays a private detective. He's kind of like the... George Washington (?) of this movie. He's tasked with helping an old lady (Martha Washington -- or maybe she represents the Colonies themselves?) with figuring out whether her husband (easy, King George III) had a young woman raped and murdered on film (okay, the young woman represents the collective victims of the Boston Massacre?!). On Cage's journey (Washington's March from Newport to Yorktown), he encounters many colorful characters (Rochambeau, Lafayette, other Hamilton references) and finds one odd fellow played by Joaquin Phoenix, willing to be his unlikely Right-Hand Man (HAMILTON HIMSELF! THIS IS WORKING!!!). Together they enter the dark, sordid world of underground fringe porn and snuff film (New Jersey) where they find the man responsible for the snuff film, Peter Stormare (General Howe). Joaquin meets his untimely end (not gonna gloat or anything, but...) and Cage, like Washington, wins the day, but loses a bit of himself in the process. Then he becomes President.
