Philosophy for Kids / Philosophy’s Not Boring: The Kids Philosophy Podcast

A groundbreaking podcast for curious kids aged 4-12, and the grown-ups listening with them, that proves philosophy, psychology and religion are anything but dull.

Join our fictional AI hosts Mira, a brilliant 9-year-old, and her younger brother Finn, age 7, as they explore philosophy, psychology and religion as one big family of questions about how we make sense of things. Each episode takes a real thinker or idea seriously, from what makes you the same person you were as a baby to why people across the world believe such different things about the soul, and then lands it somewhere in your actual life.

We don’t hand you the answer and move on. Some questions have one; some have several worth comparing; some nobody has ever settled, and we’ll tell you which is which. On matters of faith we stay even-handed: we describe what people believe from the outside, and never tell you what to believe yourself. Because philosophy isn’t a pile of hard words to memorize. It’s learning to ask a better question, and to sit with it honestly, even when it’s uncomfortable.

A note on why we use AI. For us, AI allows us to deliver learning at a scale and quality that previously would have been too expensive. If we make the odd technical error, or the sound goes a bit funny, bear with us, we’re trying our best. We hope you enjoy the show!

    Show notes

Have you ever felt completely outraged when a friend or sibling got a bigger piece of cake than you? You probably yelled, "That is NOT fair!" But did grown-ups invent the rules of fairness, or were we born already knowing them? Join Mira and Finn on an exciting episode of Philosophy is Not Boring as they explore one of the most famous and hilarious science experiments ever filmed! In 2003, scientist Frans de Waal gave two cute capuchin monkeys the exact same job. At first, both monkeys were perfectly happy getting paid in slices of cucumber. Munch, munch, munch! But what happened when one monkey suddenly got a sweet, juicy grape for doing the exact same work? Let's just say the other monkey wasn't happy—she hurled her cucumber straight back at the scientist! This amazing experiment proves that fairness isn't just a human rule; it's a built-in animal instinct! Discover why dogs, monkeys, and kids all share that burning sense of justice, and learn the hardest part of true fairness: minding when the unfairness is actually in your favor! Get ready for monkey business and big questions!

    Show notes

Imagine a magical machine that could give you any experience you ever wanted—for the rest of your life! Want to fly to space, hit a game-winning home run, or eat a giant mountain of chocolate ice cream? Once you plug in, it feels one hundred percent real, but your actual body is just floating in a tank in a laboratory. Would you do it? In this mind-bending episode, Mira and Finn explore a famous puzzle invented by philosopher Robert Nozick in 1974 called the Experience Machine! We dive into a big idea called hedonism, which is the belief that only pleasure and avoiding pain matter. But here is the crazy twist: almost nobody actually wants to plug into the perfect happiness machine forever! Why? Because we want to really build our own Lego castles, really be brave heroes, and spend time with our actual, real-life friends. Join the fun as we ask the biggest question of all: what makes a good life? Listen to find out why hard work, real friends, and even scraped knees are actually the best parts of being alive!

    Show notes

Have you ever tried to be the absolute best version of yourself? We are always trying to level up, earn gold stars, and improve! But what if the ultimate goal of life wasn't to improve "you", but to completely let go of being a separate person altogether? Join Mira and Finn as they explore Sufism, a beautiful mystical tradition inside the religion of Islam that flips everything we know about the self upside down! Instead of building a better ego, Sufis believe the "self" (called the Nafs) is like a heavy winter coat blocking you from the sunshine. Discover the incredible 13th-century poet Rumi, whose beautiful words are still read all over the world today! Learn about fascinating practices like dhikr (rhythmic breathing) and the mind-blowing Whirling Dervishes who spin for nearly an hour as an active, moving prayer. It’s an amazing journey into what it means to lose yourself in something you love—like getting totally absorbed in a great book or building a giant Lego spaceship. Get ready to wonder, relax, and think big!

Who was Donald Winnicott? Aug 23, 2026
    Show notes

Imagine having perfectly perfect parents. They never burn the toast, always play exactly what you want, and never make you wait for anything. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, prepare to have your mind blown! In this episode of Philosophy is Not Boring, Mira and Finn discover why a completely perfect, totally frictionless life is actually a terrible idea! Travel back in time to mid-twentieth century London to meet Donald Winnicott, a famous children's doctor who observed over sixty thousand kids and parents. He realized something wild: kids absolutely need their parents to make mistakes! If parents never mess up, kids never learn how to handle the real world. Think about it like walking on slippery ice—you need a little friction to keep from falling flat on your face! Winnicott called this being a "good enough" parent, and it means those five extra minutes of waiting for your favorite toy are actually building your super-strength resilience! Plus, you'll learn all about his amazing "Squiggle Game" that helped kids safely talk about their biggest feelings. Tune in to find out why making mistakes is the best way to grow up!

What is the Paradox of the Heap? Aug 22, 2026
    Show notes

Imagine a giant mountain of sand at the beach. If you take away just one single tiny grain, is it still a heap? Of course! But what if you keep taking away one grain at a time, all afternoon, until there is only one microscopic grain left? When exactly did it stop being a heap? Which single grain broke the rule? Join Mira and Finn as they explore one of the oldest and most mind-bending puzzles in history: the Paradox of the Heap! Invented by the ancient Greek philosopher Eubulides of Miletus over two thousand years ago, this awesome puzzle shows us that many everyday words—like "tall," "old," or even "clean"—are actually totally blurry! We will dive into the funny Bald Man paradox, ask at what exact drop of water a puddle magically becomes a lake, and discover why having fuzzy words isn't a mistake, but actually a brilliant feature of our amazing, constantly changing world. Get ready to stretch your brain and look at puddles, messy rooms, and growing up in a whole new way!

What is the Fundamental Attribution Error? Aug 21, 2026
    Show notes

Have you ever noticed that when someone bumps into you in the hallway, you instantly think they are rude? But when YOU bump into someone, you have a perfectly good excuse, like being in a massive hurry! Welcome to the Fundamental Attribution Error! Join Mira and Finn on Philosophy is Not Boring as they uncover why our brains can be so unfair on purpose! Psychologists have discovered that we sort actions into two buckets: Character (who someone is inside) and Situation (what's happening around them). When we make a mistake, we blame our situation, but when other people make mistakes, we blame their character! We learn all about Lee Ross's famous 1977 psychology experiment and why our brains take lazy shortcuts when we're tired or busy. What happens when your best friend doesn't text back? Did their tablet die, or are they ignoring you? Discover how learning to spot this mental error is actually a real-life superpower! Once you see the hidden situations around you, you can become a much kinder, more generous friend. Grab your headphones and let's unlock this awesome psychology secret!

Have you ever stubbed your toe and felt a huge wave of pain? You know for certain that it hurts! But how do you know your friends feel pain exactly the same way? Welcome to one of the biggest brain-twisters in human history: The Problem of Other Minds! Join Mira and Finn as they explore a wild philosophical puzzle. We know what our own thoughts and feelings are like from the inside, but we can only guess what is happening inside everyone else's head from the outside! Is everyone around you actually a "philosophical zombie" just pretending to be human? Do we all have the exact same "beetle" hidden in our secret brain boxes? We will dive into amazing ideas from famous thinkers like René Descartes and Ludwig Wittgenstein to see how humans connect. Plus, find out why scientists originally thought dogs didn't have feelings, and how a famous computer test tried to prove machines could think! Don't worry, this puzzle has a beautiful ending. Discover why trusting each other is the absolute coolest choice we make every single day. Get ready to bend your brain!

What is Zoroastrianism? Aug 19, 2026
    Show notes

Imagine you're in a giant cosmic game of tug-of-war, and you have to play! Join Mira and Finn as they travel over three thousand years back in time to Ancient Persia to explore Zoroastrianism! Founded by a prophet named Zarathustra, this is one of the absolute oldest religions in the world. Instead of just watching gods fight in the sky, Zoroastrians believe that every single person is an active warrior in a massive cosmic battle between Truth and the Lie. How do you fight? Not with swords or shields, but with a special ancient code: Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds! We'll discover how your ordinary everyday choices tip the balance of the universe, learn about amazing sacred fire temples that have been kept burning for over a thousand years, and reveal how Zarathustra's ideas secretly helped shape other major world religions. Plus, find out a mind-blowing secret about the Three Wise Men from the Christmas story! Get ready for an epic historical adventure where your choices truly matter to the whole universe!

What is cognitive dissonance? Aug 18, 2026
    Show notes

Have you ever wanted something really, really badly, but when you couldn't get it, you suddenly decided you never even wanted it in the first place? Welcome to the weird and wild world of the human brain! Join Mira and Finn as they uncover a sneaky mind trick called Cognitive Dissonance. In the 1950s, a famous psychologist named Leon Festinger discovered that our brains absolutely hate it when our beliefs and our actions crash into each other. It creates a terrible, buzzing, clashing feeling in our minds! To make that uncomfortable buzz go away, our brains will actually rewrite the story and change what we believe without even asking us. We'll explore why we make up silly excuses when we lose a game, why people in a famous science experiment convinced themselves a totally boring job was actually super fun, and how an ancient Greek fable about a fox gave us the famous phrase "sour grapes"! Spotting this sneaky brain trick as it happens is a genuine real-life superpower. Are you ready to catch your brain in the act? Tune in and let's go!
