Philosophy for Kids / Philosophy’s Not Boring: The Kids Philosophy Podcast

A groundbreaking podcast for curious kids aged 4-12, and the grown-ups listening with them, that proves philosophy, psychology and religion are anything but dull.

Join our fictional AI hosts Mira, a brilliant 9-year-old, and her younger brother Finn, age 7, as they explore philosophy, psychology and religion as one big family of questions about how we make sense of things. Each episode takes a real thinker or idea seriously, from what makes you the same person you were as a baby to why people across the world believe such different things about the soul, and then lands it somewhere in your actual life.

We don’t hand you the answer and move on. Some questions have one; some have several worth comparing; some nobody has ever settled, and we’ll tell you which is which. On matters of faith we stay even-handed: we describe what people believe from the outside, and never tell you what to believe yourself. Because philosophy isn’t a pile of hard words to memorize. It’s learning to ask a better question, and to sit with it honestly, even when it’s uncomfortable.

A note on why we use AI. For us, AI allows us to deliver learning at a scale and quality that previously would have been too expensive. If we make the odd technical error, or the sound goes a bit funny, bear with us, we’re trying our best. We hope you enjoy the show!

    Show notes

Imagine you are building the most epic sandcastle ever, and someone kicks it down! What is your first instinct? To hit back, right? It is human nature to want to get even. But around 2,000 years ago, a teacher named Jesus of Nazareth gave a famous speech called the Sermon on the Mount, and his instructions were completely upside-down! Instead of getting revenge, he told his followers to do the unthinkable: love your enemies! Join Mira and Finn as they explore what it means to 'turn the other cheek' and how to stop the never-ending 'ping-pong game of anger.' We dive into why gentle, peaceful people were called the truly important ones, instead of the scary, powerful Roman soldiers. Discover how these shocking ideas became the famous Golden Rule—treating others exactly the way you want to be treated—and how they inspired famous peacemakers like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. It leaves us with a massive question: is choosing not to fight back a sign of weakness, or is it actually the bravest superpower a person can have? Tune in to find out!

Have you ever opened the fridge and stared inside, even when you aren't hungry? Or accidentally called your teacher "Mom" in front of the whole class? (Oops!) Why do our brains do weird things like that without us even realizing it? Join Mira and Finn on Philosophy is Not Boring as they explore one of the biggest mysteries of all: your very own mind! Around the year 1900, a famous doctor from Vienna named Sigmund Freud had a massive, world-changing idea. He believed your mind is actually like a giant iceberg! While the tiny tip sticking out of the water is the part you know about—your conscious thoughts—there is a huge, hidden world deep underwater. This hidden part is called the unconscious, and it is packed with secret wishes, feelings, and old memories that quietly steer how you act! Discover how Freud believed our weird, wacky dreams are actually secret messages from this underwater world. Find out why modern scientists disagree with some of his ideas, and why he made his patients lie on a super comfortable couch with fluffy dogs! Get ready to dive deep and discover the secrets of your brain!

Have you ever looked at a picture of yourself as a tiny baby and wondered, "Is that really me?" Believe it or not, an ancient Greek puzzle about a wooden boat might hold the answer! In this mind-blowing episode, Mira and Finn travel to ancient India to explore Jainism and its most important idea: Ahimsa, which means absolute non-violence! Discover how the most devoted Jain monks and nuns take peace to an incredible level. You will be amazed to learn why they carry soft brooms to gently sweep the dirt path ahead of them, wear soft cloth masks to avoid breathing in tiny invisible flies, and carefully strain their drinking water! We even uncover why eating a root vegetable like a carrot or potato is strictly off-limits! From the teachings of the great figure Mahavira to a real hospital in India built entirely for sick birds, learn how far some people will go to show kindness to every living soul. How far would you go to protect a tiny bug? Tune in and find out!

    Show notes

Have you ever heard the music from an ice cream truck and suddenly wanted a yummy strawberry popsicle before you even saw it? Your brain is playing a trick on you! Join Mira and Finn on Philosophy is Not Boring as they travel back in time to 1900 to meet Ivan Pavlov, a famous Russian scientist who made an amazing discovery almost completely by accident! Pavlov was just trying to study dog stomachs, but he noticed something super strange. His dogs started drooling at the sound of his lab assistant's footsteps! Why? Because their brains made a secret shortcut linking the sound of footsteps to their dinner! We explore the mind-bending science of "classical conditioning" and discover how our brains wire us to react to random smells, sounds, and jingles every single day. Plus, get ready for a giant historical plot twist: Pavlov didn't actually use a bell in his most famous experiment! Put on your lab coat, tune in for some mind-blowing science trivia, and test your brain with our awesome episode quiz!
