How to Innovate like Amazon to Modernize Clinical Trials Jul 11, 2019
    Show notes

This session was presented at the 8th annual DPharm conference in September 2018. When Amazon announced that the creation of a new healthcare company with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase, the move signaled how the company is stepping into the healthcare industry. However, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been working directly with the healthcare and life science industries for quite some time. Life Science Director, Mark Johnston, shares how AWS thinks about innovation, in particular for the life science industry, including clinical trials. More specifically: How AWS looks at problems and transforms processes through new technologiesHow to think about going faster to be more effective in solving problems without the worries of infrastructureHow to imagine what to do next if you were un-trapped by historical baggage and preceived limitationsOpportunities to considerExamples Speaker: Mark Johnston, Director of Global Business Development for Health Care, Life Sciences, and Agricultural Technology, Amazon Web Services The 9th annual DPharm will take place on September 17-18 in Boston, MA. Alzheimer’s Studies: Exploring Registries to Improve Enrollment & Trial Design Jun 25, 2019
    Show notes

Roughly, 5.7 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s. Globally, an estimated 47 million individuals are living with dementia. There is no cure, and treatments can only relieve certain symptoms for some people. Research studies so far have a poor record. Patients can face incredible enrollment hurdles in clinical trials. A Patient Registry can be very useful in identifying patients. A registry can also address the original problem statement about failed trials. A robust, living registry becomes a data pool from which we can improve both drug discovery, using probabilistic statistics and AI/ML to identify new drug candidates, and drug development, using simulators to predict likelihood of success in Phase 2 or 3. In this podcast, we discuss major challenges facing developers of Alzheimer’s therapies and address patient registries and how they can improve enrollment and trial design. In this podcast, we will hear some details about the HealthyMindsRegistry, Synexushmr.com and the Protect Study Registry, Protectstudy.org.uk registry. For US and UK citizens over 50 who have not been diagnosed with dementia can participate in the registry on-line. Guests: Dr Clive Ballard, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean, University of Exeter, External partner in the AES HealthyMinds Registry (HMR) Dr Heather Bryson, Director, Operational and Strategic Solutions at Accelerated Enrollment Solutions, (AES) Host: Dr Julie Adams, Psychiatrist and Regional Medical Officer, PPD Biotech Producer: Valerie Bowling, Executive Director, the Conference Forum

Combining IO Modalities In a Cost Effective, Patient Beneficial Manner May 01, 2019
    Show notes

The hardest thing to figure out now is what interventions and combinations make the most sense in which patients and how to combine all these emerging modalities in a way that is cost effective, benefits patients and unfolds in our lifetime. There are hypothesis on what technologies should be explored together, however very few companies have all the relevant skills, reagents or product candidates in one setting, so it requires collaboration to generate the most powerful combinations and sequence of interventions. This overview talk, followed by a panel will delve into the following: What is the underlying pathobiology and how it is similar from patient to patient and how it is different in individuals? What interventions make the most sense and how to get the right patient into the studies to test your hypothesis? How can we build an integrated suite of tools to ask and answer all the relevant questions to appropriately characterize patients? How can we develop something cost effective that doesn’t necessarily require 100K worth of diagnostic tests in every patient? Save the date for IO Combinations 360° happening June 20-21, 2019 at the Wyndham Historic District Hotel, Philadelphia, PA and for IO360° happening February 26-28, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Times Square in New York City.

How so?What is the balance between in house R&D and external innovation in IO?What is the decision making regarding exclusive licensing and “no strings attached” partnerships? Save the date for IO Combinations 360° happening June 20-21, 2019 at the Wyndham Historic District Hotel, Philadelphia, PA and for IO360° happening February 26-28, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Times Square in New York City.

Next Generation Biomarker and Companion Diagnostics for Predicting Response Apr 29, 2019
    Show notes

This panel, moderated by Dr Priti Hegde, Genentech, discusses the following: How can biomarkers act as a tool for understanding the biology at a level that is sufficient for making decisions around combinations? What are the potential biomarkers that can help predict if a patient will respond to combinations?Once a biomarker is identified in terms of biology, been measured and the technology platform identified to meet those measures, how is the biomarker developed to the level of clinical grade that meets approval? How do we validate diagnostics in IO/combinations?How do you satisfy regulators? Are there other biomarkers in development? What are the implications for intervention? Are biomarkers and companion diagnostics crucial for rational combination success? Save the date for IO Combinations 360° happening June 20-21, 2019 at the Wyndham Historic District Hotel, Philadelphia, PA and for IO360° happening February 26-28, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Times Square in New York City.
