Pharmacists Inside the Intelligent Health Ecosystem | Pharmacy Podcast Nation Aug 22, 2022
    Show notes

A new report penned by Pamela Spence, EY’s Global Health Sciences and Wellness Industry, explores how heath care in the future will be transformed by a living, intelligent ecosystem that enables care delivery anytime and anywhere, and how pharmacists can utilize AI technologies to make health care even more human. According to EY, there is no single new technology that holds the key to the future of health care. Rather, as technologies such as sensors, cloud computing, AR/VR and 5G continue to evolve and converge with more advanced technologies, like quantum computing and the metaverse, they are enabling the creation of a growing internet of medical things (IoMT), which will extend itself everywhere – beginning with sensors in and on our bodies, to our homes and working environments, and beyond, to smart specialist care facilities. The result: unprecedented growth (36% CAGR over the next three years) in quantity and quality of health data available. Data – particularly the disparate, often unstructured data generated from our daily lives, which is often relevant to health outcomes – requires new analytical tools to turn it from raw information into actionable insights. EY identified two key areas for pharmacists to focus in order to create value in this intelligent health ecosystem of the future: · Personalized insights through artificial intelligence – AI offers a means to connect, combine and interrogate unstructured data differently and unlock actionable insights. With the power of AI, pharmas can begin to link the huge volumes of data generated and the vast array of technological tools being developed into a comprehensive, integrated smart health system. This data-driven smart system enables the breakdown of silos between care settings and optimizes decision-making across the patient journey. · User experience defines the value – The explosion in data and technological innovation offers pharmas a way to reinvent care as a patient-centered, personalized health experience. To succeed in this reinvented world companies will need to consider not only traditional clinical metrics, but also the non-clinical measures which capture the subjective reality of the patient’s own experience. Use of these measures to generate actionable insights via AI will be the pivot for the move from data to value and thus, for BioPharma companies to gain fair reimbursement for innovation and new products. Access to Community Pharmacies: A Nation-Wide Geographic Information Systems Cross-sectional Analysis Aug 19, 2022
    Show notes

Pharmacy accessibility is key for the emerging role of community pharmacists as providers of patient-centered, medication management services in addition to traditional dispensing roles. Community pharmacies may serve as accessible locations for patient-centered, medication management services that enhance the health and wellness of communities. Although chain pharmacies represent the majority of pharmacy locations across the country, access to community pharmacies in rural areas predominantly relies on regional franchises and independently owned pharmacies. Research Data Validates the Value of Pharmacists Providing Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation: An Interview with the Re... Aug 11, 2022
    Show notes

Significant challenges to widescale clinical implementation of PGx include a lack of physician experience using PGx test data or confidence in interpreting PGx test data and integrating the data into the medication therapy management process. For PGx to be most impactful, prescribers must consider PGx data within the context of other non-genetic patient-specific factors. Pharmacists may help prescribers with PGx test data by creating a summary of medication therapy management recommendations for the patient that streamlines PGx report flags and identifies other pharmacotherapy interventions the pharmacist recognizes while applying non-genetic patient-specific data to the PGx test data. In this episode of the PGx for Pharmacists podcast, Dr. Becky Winslow discusses the research study, "Pharmacist Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation," with two of the research investigators, Dr. Anna Langerveld and Dr. David Bright. Dr. Langerveld and Dr. Bright share how this research adds to the growing evidence that clinical pharmacists can help improve the utility of PGx and prescribing. They also share how their study described a process for reducing PGx laboratory report information to a single page of patient-specific clinical recommendations. Lastly, they share that while clinical decision support tools are becoming more routine for pharmacogenomic management, the pharmacists in this study reduced the number of report-based alerts independent of sophisticated clinical decision support informatics. Anna Langerveld, Ph.D., is the Founder and President of Genemarkers, a contract research organization and CLIA/CAP certified testing laboratory specializing in genomics. Anna received her B.A. in Psychology from SUNY Binghamton and her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Program in Neurosciences at Tulane University. After receiving her Ph.D., Anna served as a Research Assistant Professor at Western Michigan University. She founded Genemarkers in 2008. Under her leadership, Michigan Celebrates Small Business recognized the Company as one of the Top 50 Michigan Companies to watch. Anna is an author of peer-reviewed publications, an NIH grant recipient, and an invited speaker at a wide range of national meetings. Anna currently serves as an adjunct professor and an advisory board member for the Manchester University pharmacogenomics program and holds a community faculty position at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. Anna has been instrumental in developing strategic community partnerships to implement the use of genomics in clinical care, with a particular focus on mental health and underserved populations. Dr. David Bright is a Professor of Pharmacy at Ferris State University, where he has taught therapeutics and medication therapy management. He received his PharmD degree from the University of Toledo, completed a community pharmacy residency with Kroger Pharmacy and the University of Toledo, and served on the faculty at the Ohio Northern University as a community pharmacy residency program director. His research has primarily involved the pragmatic implementation and improvement of non-dispensing pharmacy services, particularly in the outpatient setting. Most recently, that has involved the integration of pharmacogenomics into clinical practice through community pharmacy and ambulatory care practice models. Research discussed in the podcast episode: Bright D, Saadeh C, DeVuyst-Miller S, Sohn M, Choker A, Langerveld A. Pharmacist Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation. Gender Affirmed: Inclusion in the Pharmacy | Transforming a Nation Aug 10, 2022
    Show notes

The first in a four-part series detailing medication access for gender-diverse individuals in light of increasingly restrictive legislative action. As front-line healthcare workers, it’s incumbent upon pharmacists to be paragons of not only equality but equity in healthcare. Gender expansive and nonbinary patients face a massive disparity of outcomes, many of which are improved with gender-affirming therapy. With the expansion of pharmacists’ roles in healthcare, many cases of gender-affirming therapy are often overseen or monitored by pharmacists. The world is changing, and the landscape of healthcare with it. Our audience of pharmacists, pharmacy students, and other healthcare providers need to hear the stories of gender-diverse patients, pharmacists, and advocates who will stop at nothing to bridge the gap to care.
