You are the product of the things you do every, single day. The topic of ‘presence’ is often undervalued in the life of a leader because we are so focused on planning. What we’re going to do today is to create space and time for intentional evaluation. Because most of the answers you need, you already have, sometimes you need to take the time to think, evaluate, and reflect.
So we're going to think and evaluate and reflect today on the topic of how you are using your time and where you should be using your time.

Growth requires struggle, that’s a given, but your growth and the growth of those you lead is dependent on how you respond to that struggle. Will you respond poorly, or will you struggle well? Today’s episode is about how to struggle well and the difference between healthy struggle and toxic struggle. But before we get into it, let’s cover three quick principles.
· Struggle and meaning are often intertwined
· There's often value on the other side of struggle
· Too much struggle, for too long can kill you
Four differences between healthy struggle and toxic struggle:
1. Healthy struggle hurts. Toxic struggle harms.
· Hurt is temporary. Harm is irreparable.
2. Healthy struggle aligns with stated values. Toxic struggle compromises stated values.
· Prolonged seasons of struggle that have caused you to compromise values that you hold are toxic.
3. Healthy struggle asks who am I becoming? Toxic struggle asks how am I appearing?
· Stop worrying about looking successful, start focusing on being successful.
4. Healthy struggle can be enjoyed and embraced. Toxic struggle can't.
· You cannot find fulfillment by compounding misery
Action steps for someone who is living in toxic struggle:
· Own it. You will never fix what you refuse to see.
· Tell someone you trust. Growth never occurs in isolation.
· Have the faith necessary to do less in pursuit of being someone that is healthy and able to serve others over the long haul.
· Resolve to find a way to love your days. Don't spend all your time working to create a future that you will one day love. Spend your time loving right now.

A great leader asks great questions because a leader's effectiveness is based on their questions, not their answers. The quality of your conversation reflects the quality of your questions.
Communication is a skill, not an identity. It’s not something you are born with; it is a discipline, something you practice and learn through repetition. But before you can be great at communication have to learn three things:
Five types of questions for leaders:
Tactical Questions: Day-to-day questions that provide an incremental return.
Strategic Questions: Look at the big picture
Perspective Questions: Acknowledge our emotional and situational enmeshment.
Expansionary Questions: Dare to envision a future that doesn't yet exist.
Principle-Based Questions: Rely on transcendent truth and focus on making that principle remarkably practical.

Bad habits are rooted in what you do. Good habits are rooted in who you are. In order to make the most of your morning, start by asking yourself: who are you called to be?
The morning is the kingpin of the day, how you start it matters A LOT because:
Start your day right so you can serve others best, develop a morning ritual by starting small and stacking habits on top of each other. Get rid of distractions, eliminate potential roadblocks. Determine your ideal wake-up time by finding the optimal struggle, find something that is just a little outside of your comfort zone but try to get 7-8 hours of sleep. But don’t just rip off someone else’s morning, stay true to yourself work on creating your own by answering the question: who are you called to be.

It might be simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Sometimes leaders fall into the trap of sophistication bias and buy into the idea that complexity conveys importance. But impact-driven leaders should never underestimate the value of simplicity. So today, we're keeping it simple and discussing two leadership essentials: VISION and EXECUTION.
VISION and EXECUTION are essential for you to invest in a path for growth that is healthy, life-giving, and sustainable. In the presence of these two things, we build the foundation for us to grow. In the absence of these two things, chaos will result.
1. A clear vision for where you are going
2. A plan for consistently executing on the things that matter most over an extended time

Hero’s are approval-seeking, achievement-oriented, people pleasers. A hero lets their significance come at the expense of others' growth and chases perfection. A leader takes the role of the servant and chases excellence. Dr. Chip Dodd’s mission in life is to help people see who they’re made to be so they can do what they’re made to do; in this episode, he shares:

The effectiveness of your leadership is not measured by the number of followers you have but by the number of leaders you develop.
As an impact-driven leader, you must be willing to sacrifice short term efficiency for long-term effectiveness. Developing leaders take a lot longer than creating followers. If you are creating followers, then by nature, you become the bottleneck in your organization.

Bryan Miles is a successful entrepreneur, husband, father, backpacker, mountain climber, mentor, and writer. In addition, he’s the Co-Chair and Co-Founder of BELAY. He and his wife, Shannon, are proud Co-Owners. Bootstrapping their business with no outside funding, the company has generated over $100M in revenues since its beginning and has exploded to over one thousand team members – all of whom work from home. Without an office, BELAY has graced the Inc. 5000 list six times and was awarded the number one spot in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Best Company Culture and been featured in several top-tier media outlets over the years.
Additionally, outside of BELAY, Bryan & Shannon own a craft brewing company (NoFo Brew Co) and they own an advisory company that helps successful business owners own their companies, not run them (Own Not Run).
This week Bryan joins Alex in a conversation that revolves around the idea that ego creates followers, but stewardship creates leaders. If you want to grow, you have to learn to trust others enough to delegate responsibility, if you want to start owning your business, you need start doing the things that only you can do.

Have you ever heard a rant that resonates deep in your soul? If not, you’re about to.
There’s nothing wrong with a well-timed and thought out rant. We rant about what makes us angry, and we get angry about what we care about. Everyone needs to hear this.
Here's the principle: There's a massive difference between self-improvement and selfish improvement.

2020 was a crazy experience and there are people out there that will say "well, there's always value in experience." But that's not true. There's value in evaluated experience. We extract the value of the experience that we've had, when we take the time to intentionally, purposefully, and thoughtfully evaluate it.
If you are like most entrepreneurs and leaders, you could suffer from blind optimism and the result causes dissonance because reality differs from your expectation.
To end 2020 well, we need to evaluate our wins and failures and examine our expectations. This episode will serve as a guide to give you the clarity you need the close out the year and prepare for 2021.

We're doing something a little bit different on today's podcast. Over the course of the past couple of months, we've seen a trend. Leaders and business owners feel like they are trapped by the thing that they're building. That's a scary place to be. Have you ever been there before, or maybe you're there right now where you feel trapped, you feel constrained, you feel contained?
Today's episode is a message that Alex preached at cornerstone church on the topic of finding freedom. Because so often, the way that we experience freedom is directly related to the place that we choose to find it.

If you are the owner and CEO of your organization, or if you are the intern in an organization, I guarantee you, what we're going to talk about today can apply to you where you're at.
Oftentimes the larger an organization becomes, the less we think about our work as a contribution. But in reality, if your work isn't a contribution, if it's not driving some outcome, if it's not pointed towards some results, then all you're doing is filling a seat.
To be intentional about contributions, we're going to focus on three contributions the impact-driven leader should be focused on:

The ability to have a civil conversation is the lifeblood of our democracy. It doesn't matter what political party you align yourself with unless you have principles to back it up. What makes our country work are real people like you who will work every day. Because change does not happen unless leaders take responsibility. Impact-driven leaders take ownership of their sphere of influence and say, "I'm going to do whatever I can to make the situation that I am in just a little bit better."
In today's episode, we're going to talk about three actionable steps for leading well in this season.
1. Focus more on what you believe in than who you believe in.
2. Understand why you believe what you believe.
3. Acknowledge your own imperfection.

In today's conversation episode today, we sit down with Jason McCarthy who is the CEO and founder of the unbelievable world-class organization called GORUCK.
"My life was a mess. I had just gotten out of the military, I was going through a divorce from the only love of my life, and the financial crisis was in full swing. My company, GORUCK, was little more than a hobby in the Summer of 2010. I was broke and thought I had nothing to lose, so my dog Java and I hit the open roads to visit all 48 contiguous states, to meet people and get into adventures. I was searching for something, I just didn’t know what. And I found some answers, just not the ones I expected."- Jason McCarthy

Impact-driven leaders do not make the mistake of confusing fulfillment with happiness. If you are someone that is pursuing a life that is full, a life that is whole, a life that provides you with fulfillment, then one of the elements of a fulfilled life is what we're talking about today.
That element is responsibility. One of the core and essential elements of a fulfilled and whole life is responsibility.

There is a fine line but a huge difference between self-improvement and selfish improvement. The problem is a lot of people lean towards selfish improvement, at Path For Growth we believe strength is for service and leadership starts internally, not externally.
The greatest gift you can give someone who depends on you is your own personal health and growth. An unhealthy leader believes they can do it all. The healthy leader makes sure they have boundaries. An unhealthy leader says “yes” for fear of disappointing people. The healthy leader says “no” to the wrong things so that they can fully invest in the right ones.
1. Healthy leadership starts with inward strength.
2. A healthy leader's internal strength always results in outward service.
3. A healthy leader adds value every single day.
The greatest gift you can give someone who depends on you is your own personal health and growth.
“Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status.” Romans 15
