A Simple (And Effective) Way To Develop Leaders Oct 30, 2017
    Show notes

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

    • Training doesn't develop leaders. Training allows organizations to batch content and scale their message. But the results speak for themselves - leadership training doesn't produce better leaders.
    • The best way to develop leaders is through relationship. Taking a more personalized approach that emphasizes empathy, clarity and service results in leaders who do their best work for the long haul.
    • Develop emotional intelligence and you've done 80% of the work. Leadership failure can almost always be attributed to a lack of self-awareness or empathy, which are the heart and soul of emotional intelligence.

The problem with leadership training is less about the content and more about the context. Three simple questions asked in the context of a genuine relationship creates a fertile field of potential. This episode cracks the code on a topic that has attracted lots of attention, a ton of ideas and sketchy results.

Take this simple strategy, put it to work and grow the leadership potential of your organization!

I am also a leadership coach who works with hundreds of leaders trying to figure out how to make their life count. The Real Reason You Want To Be Productive Oct 16, 2017
    Show notes

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

Pay attention to your productivity. A Microsoft study found that the average worker in the U.S. wastes 17 hours in a 45 hour work week. Honoring our employer and the people we serve by working with focus is a surprising way to make Jesus impossible to ignore.

Be like Ike. President Dwight Eisenhower developed a matrix for making decisions based on the importance and urgency of a particular task. Use the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize your most significant work.

Put your most significant work first. The vast majority of leaders struggle to do their most significant work because these non-urgent tasks get crowded out by what has to be dealt with right now. Taking time to schedule work on your significant tasks is critical to your success.

Get some rhythm. Nobody can work full-throttle all day long. Create a simple rhythm where you focus on tasks for 90 minutes and then take a break/do a different kind of task for 30 minutes.

For all the talk about productivity, don't confuse means with ends. Productivity is a vehicle for discovering freedom - freedom to focus, freedom to be present, freedom to be spontaneous, freedom to rest (H/T: Michael Hyatt)

How To Slow Down and Lead Well with Pastor Leonce Crump Jr. Oct 09, 2017
    Show notes

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

If you are under the age of 40, slow down. Embrace the process of maturity. Move patiently toward the time when your experience and results earn you the right to be heard.

The importance of leading locally. Social media creates an opportunity to influence people you've never met in places that you've never been. Time-tested leadership, however, requires focused work and a shared life with the people around you.

Jesus is a friend of sinners. Pastor Leonce's story of conversion as a student-athlete at the University of Oklahoma reminds us to never give up on someone because of their behavior. God is always at work!

The Church must have a social conscience. Biblical discipleship helps people gain perspective and a view of the world that will not fit neatly into any political party. Instead of relying on partisan sound bites, church leaders must cross lines, challenge assumptions and cultivate a hunger for human flourishing.

Are You Healthy? Grab Our FREE Assessment And Find Out.

In the interview, Pastor Leonce shares some of his practices for maintaining spiritual and physical health and explains why he has made time with his family a priority. If you wonder what it takes to thrive as a leader, here's a FREE overview of the 'five factors' of healthy leadership.

    Check Out These Highlights:
    • How young leaders sabotage their legacy
    • The wisdom and metrics needed to evaluate new leadership opportunities
    • The present pain that shapes you into the leader you need to be tomorrow
    • The hollow success of social media presence
    • How Jesus persuaded Pastor Leonce to follow him
    • How Bob Stoops persuaded Pastor Leonce to play football at Oklahoma
    • Why Pastor Leonce is a social activist
    • How to overcome partisan politics and embrace a biblical worldview

Friends and Family - Don't Discount Your Relationships Oct 02, 2017
    Show notes

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

Healthy relationships begin with you. Leaders are surrounded by distractions at the office, on their phone and in the world around them. Those distractions make it difficult to gain clarity about what's going on inside of your head and heart.

There is a genuine and present stress on the marriages of leaders. From working too much to bringing work home to the challenges of making friends, resentment for that work grows in the hearts of leaders and their spouses. That creates a dysfunctional dance that damages the relationship between a husband and wife.

Use your calendar to make time for your kids. Scheduled time that leads to significant conversations is better than spontaneous time that never happens.

Leaders need friends outside of their home. Beyond digital friendships or transactional friendships, real friendships stand the test of time, challenge the worst in us and bring out the best in us.

You know that relationships are important, but you're not alone if you take relationships for granted. My advice is to grab our Feelings Wheel (check out the links below) and get clarity about your feelings. That will help you re-engage with the people who matter most to you.

Are You Healthy? Grab Our FREE Assessment And Find Out.

Your relationships are just one of five areas of life you must pay attention to if you want to thrive as a leader. If you've ever wondered if you're covering your bases and setting yourself up for success, check out this FREE overview and assessment of each of the 'five factors' of healthy leadership.

3 Signs Of Spiritual Health Sep 25, 2017
    Show notes

I (Matt) can still remember the scene…

I am in kindergarten. My mom has just arrived home from the commissary (grocery store) with a car filled with groceries. Next to the car is a big orange box of Tide laundry detergent.

And by big, I mean big. But I want to help so I try to pick it up.

Hulking up like Lou Ferrigno in green body paint (again, this is 1980...some of you know!), I am bound and determined to carry that box into the house.

    But it doesn't budge.

So I try to drag it. Just like those big European dudes in a strongman competition pulling a truck.

I get a couple of feet before I lose my grip and fall backwards on the garage floor.

This goes on for (what seems like) hours. I make it all the way to the stairs into our house.

Stuck again. Couldn't pick it up the first time. And now I've used all my Hulk powers dragging this blasted box across the garage.

My mom asks if I need help. I stubbornly refuse.

    "I can do it myself."

That isn't the last time those words come out of my mouth or my heart. Truth is, most leaders struggle to ask for help. We are convinced that self-reliance is the hallmark of good leadership.

    Well, it isn't.

    Here's the truth.

Self-reliance is a window into the soul of unhealthy leadership.

It strips the soul of gratitude.

It robs us from the rest we desperately need.

It grabs generosity and convinces us we can't afford it.

On this week's episode, Tal and I talk about self-reliance as the enemy of spiritual health. Because of what God has done, is doing and will do, spiritually healthy leaders have hope.

What does that look like in our lives? We'll show you three signs of spiritually healthy leaders and help you take steps towards a hope-filled life and leadership.

    In this episode, you'll discover:
    • What will be in style (according to Tal) for men in 2024.
    • Why leaders struggle to find and maintain spiritual health
    • The power and practice of gratitude
    • Two basic practices that help leaders rest well
    • How to be generous...with boundaries.
    • Why spiritual health is the foundation of the Five Factors framework

    Ambition Sep 18, 2017
    Show notes

On the way home from his flag football game last night, my (Matt) son, Will, asked what he could work on to get better before his next game.

Will is nine years old. This season is the fourth time that he's played flag football and after every game, we talk about how his team played and what he did to positively contribute to his team. I've never treated him like he's gonna be a five-star recruit playing on Saturdays in the SEC. He makes mistakes, but he's a little kid, so my feedback has always been positive.

But he asked the question, so we talked about running hard on toss-sweeps as a running back and the importance of eye control when he's playing cornerback on defense. And when we are at practice on Saturdays, I'll remind him to work on those things.

I love Will's ambition. He knows he did some things well. He knows that he has areas where he can improve. I don't know how the rest of the season will go for him, but his desire to make the most out of his opportunity is inspiring.

Do you have that kind of ambition? More specifically, do you do your work with a desire to bring glory to God? If the temptation as we age is to give up on ambition, the temptation in our younger days is to focus our aim upon ourselves.

On this week's episode, Tal and I talk about ambition as a clear sign of vocational health. If you want to make the most out of your life and leadership, you must be ambitious - for the fame of Christ, not your own.

From clarifying your mission to maximizing your productivity to multiplying yourself through leadership development, this episode is your permission to get the clarity and momentum you need to get the results that you want.

    In this episode you'll discover:
    • Why you can't complain about 'celebrity pastors if you have a Spurgeon bobble-head
    • The opportunity and challenge of building platforms
    • Why Billy Graham didn't set out to build a platform
    • The uniqueness of your role in God's mission
    • How desire and capacity team up to help you thrive as a leader.
    • The secret of daily productivity
    • Why annual goals don't work
    • How to find the right productivity plan for you
    • How to unleash the leadership potential in your organization
    • A tool for recruiting, training and encouraging all of your leaders
    • The problem of 'do it myself' leadership

    Resilience Sep 08, 2017
    Show notes

Some leaders have a high level of natural, God-given, intuitive, emotional intelligence. They know how they feel and they understand how others feel. They can build connections based on those feelings, and everyone is the better for it.

I (Matt) did not receive that particular gift under the leadership Christmas tree. I went to school for more than 20 years, and nobody told me that emotional intelligence was more important than 10th-grade geometry. Talking about feelings wasn't something that happened in my house growing up.

I'm not angry about it. I don't blame anyone. But I have to admit that paying attention and prioritizing emotions was not on my radar for a long time as a leader. And the odds are that they may not be that big of a priority for you either.

And our failure to prioritize emotions - ours and those we lead - and a lack of development if emotional intelligence does not come naturally is costly. I would estimate that 80% of the interpersonal conflict that I have encountered as a leader is because someone was hurt because they didn't feel heard or understood.

Think about that. Most of the problems that exist in our relationships come down to feelings, not facts. We can talk about 'speaking truth in love' 'til the cows come home, but without emotional intelligence, people won't believe we love them.

If you struggle to name your feelings or create problems for yourself as a leader by not prioritizing the feelings of others, this podcast episode will help you. Tal's gonna share wisdom about emotional intelligence, depression, and the connection that exists between our mood, mindset, and momentum as a leader.

Life is hard. Leadership is painful. Without resilience, you'll quit or hide when the chips are down. Listen to this episode, take action and make the change you need to be the best version of you as a leader.

    In this episode you'll discover:
    • [Bonus] The exact medicine you need to take to kick a cold.
    • The myth that 1,700 pastors quit each month...and why the truth might reveal a bigger problem.
    • The truth about depression from a licensed therapist.

    • The limitations of 'biblical counseling.'
    • The relationship between your mood, mindset, and motivation.

    Strength Sep 07, 2017
    Show notes

I (Matt) grew up playing baseball in the 80s. The high school I went to in Abilene, TX won the Baseball America (mythical) national championship in 1987 and 1988. As big as football is in West Texas, baseball was a close second at our school.

My primary position was pitcher. I wasn't that good, but I wanted to be. Trouble is, I was "husky" - details are inside this podcast episode - which meant that I had zero athletic advantage over anyone on our team. I was not strong. I was not fast. I simply was not physically healthy.

Are you physically healthy? Can you make it through your everyday work without propping yourself up with caffeine and sugar? Do you have the stamina to make it through the work day?

I coach a lot of leaders. And I poke and prod about their sleeping habits, their diet, their exercise routines. What I've learned is that most leaders are not physically healthy, either from abuse, misuse, or non-use.

In today's episode, Tal and I talk about the vital importance of physical health. I'll show you how to get strong (not as challenging as you think) and the payoff your physical strength provides in other areas of leadership.

    In this episode you'll discover:

What I'm learning about presence as a parent.
    • How Five Factors provides a different way to develop as a leader.
    • The importance of incremental change if you want to lead for the long haul.
    • That no two stories are alike when it comes to physical health.
    • A simple, three-part framework for building and maintaining physical health.
    • Why off-the-shelf nutrition and exercise plans do not work for you.
    • The secret to physical health (HINT: it's your hormones)
    • The importance of counting calories, and why it might be a bad strategy for you.
    • The role that other people play in your physical health
    • The lie that leaders tell themselves when they ignore physical health because they believe that they are healthy in other areas of life.

What is Five Factors? Sep 06, 2017
    Show notes

The Five Factors Leadership Podcast is a project that began almost twenty years ago at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama. And while neither Tal Prince nor I (Matt Adair) had grand plans to take over the world with a podcast, here we are. And that's a win for you.

Tal was the teaching assistant in a preaching class I had at Beeson, and he gave me a D- on a book review that I wrote for the class. I don't remember the book, but I do remember Tal's note: 'Your writing deserves an A. But your arrogance makes we want to give you an F. Consider this D- an act of mercy.'

I had never met Tal before. He didn't know me. I didn't know him. All I knew after getting the paper back and reading his note is that I wanted to challenge him to a duel. Old school, Hamilton-Burr style. I'm pretty sure I ranted to my wife about this jerkface who had the nerve to call me out and assume terrible, horrible things about me.

Problem was...I knew he was right. And I honestly don't know how I moved from wanting to fight him to wanting to become his friend. But here's what I know. That one moment changed the trajectory of my life. My arrogance hid a tractor-trailer sized amount of insecurity. And what I learned is that Tal wasn't trying to crush me; he was trying to save me.

Now, he refuses to put that story in such dramatic terms. He really did think I was an arrogant jerk. But, as he tells the story, he recognized that in me because he knew it to be true about himself. Hence, the note and an unlikely friendship.

That story - and our twenty-year friendship which has grown stronger as we have carried each other through seasons that we wouldn't wish on our worst enemy - is a snapshot of what we're offering you in the Five Factors podcast. In our work as a therapist (Tal) and a leadership coach (Matt), we know that you want to thrive in every part of your life and leadership. We also know that every leader gets stuck. Leadership is hard. People are mean. Lies get lodged in your head and heart. You act in ways that look nothing like Jesus and hurt people around you. We know that's true for you because it's true for both of us.

So what we're offering in this podcast is a promise. We will always be here to help you. This is not a vanity project for us, although we enjoy working together and we love helping leaders like you. We're offering you a place to be seen and known, as well as the opportunity to put one foot in front of the other.

You don't have to stay stuck. You don't have to quit. You can continue to make a difference. You can stay faithful. You can lead well without losing Jesus, your family or your sanity.

Welcome to the Five Factors Leadership podcast. A different way of leading for a different kind of leader.

    In this episode you'll discover:
    • The meaning of the word cudgel.
    • What happens when you get stuck as a leader.
    • What lies at the heart of leadership.
    • The importance of paying attention to your health.
    • How mental health creates resilience when life gets hard or confusing.
    • The role of physical strength in the grind of leadership.
    • The critical role that family and friends play if you want to lead for the long haul.
    • Why hope is vital to your spiritual health.
