EP15 - Joey Has Questions for Black People Jan 29, 2024

Show notes

[hosts contributing on this episode: Joey Svendsen, Robbie Madison, Stoy Prioleau]
Joey's been saving up questions revolving around black people and racism, these aren't the sort of questions you ask a stranger in the check-out line. He also shares some stories of being the recipient of racism at the hands of black people, for his two friends (and co-hosts of the show) Robbie and Stoy (both black males) to have the opportunity to shed some extra light and possibly give deeper insight on what was going on at a heart level.
Previous episode mentioned on this one, in which Joey hurt Stoy with a racial joke can be listened to RIGHT HERE.

Favorite Christmas Movies, sexist Christmas Movies from the 1940s, what to expose kids to and whether people will ever see the harm in cell phones similarly to the way society looks at smoking cigarettes. And while we're at it, should "Baby It's Cold Outside," be cancelled?

EP12 - Another Day, Another Seizure for Joey (and other horrible stories) Dec 01, 2023

Show notes

Please listen at your own risk, as the content on this one is very heavy.
[hosts contributing on this episode: Joey Svendsen, Ellen Mauro, Hayne Griffen]
Joey had a seizure a couple of weeks ago and his friends' security camera captured it all. With "firefighter Hayne" present, we learn a bit more about seizures but we also hear some horror stories he's seen on the job as a rescue worker. Oh, and Ellen thought her son was dead for a few seconds.
Along the way, the conversation expands to the usual chit chat about everything, from how the younger generation talks about TikTok like it's the creator of all entertainment, how Ellen is still happily sober, when complementing a woman turns into hitting on her, why true crime entertainment is so alluring, and why Ellen feels compelled to subject herself to footage of the horrors going on in the war around Palestine.

All Kids, These Guests Talk About: God, Parents Cussing, and Whether They'd Be Nervous to Babysit Baby Jesus Nov 16, 2023

Show notes

[Hosts Contributing in this episode: Joey Svendsen]
Three kids belonging to some listeners of this podcast, as well as Joey’s son Waylon, talk about the deeper things in life. We talk about how God is good in the context of tornadoes, some specific times their parents have cussed, how the devil is apparently stronger than God sometimes, and whether or not they would be nervous to babysit baby Jesus. One of these kids is an open theist, none of them are quite sure whether skin is an essential organ, Waylon has lied to his dad recently and a couple of them think Cobain was killed by his wife. Oh, and the devil created robbers and cancer.

EP10 - Jesus Saves All? A Case Against Eternal Damnation (w/ Derek Ryan Kubilus) Nov 14, 2023

Show notes

[Hosts Contributing in this episode: Joey Svendsen]
If God has the type of unlimited power and unquenchable love most Christians ascribe to the Creator, the theological reasoning behind people being separated from God forever simply doesn't hold up, at least not to our finite minds.

But there are so many verses in the Bible that point to a much greater salvation than what most Christians have been taught. Hearing this episode, listeners will digest the reasons why a universal view of salvation is backed by scripture just as much (if not more) as traditional views of “heaven and hell” are. In his book, “Holy Hell: a Case Against Eternal Damnation,” Methodist minister Derek Ryan Kubilus lays out an exhaustive theological and philosophical framework that outlines not only why this view is far from heresy but also why it's very likely to be true.

Joey and Derek also discuss many objections to this view, including notions like “God’s love has to be balanced by justice,” and how people need to be careful not “to put a human, man-made perspective of love on infinite God."

EP9 - Is Spanking Kids Child Abuse? Nov 06, 2023

Show notes

[Hosts Contributing in this episode: Amy Alderman / Ellen Mauro / Joey Svendsen]

While spanking used to be fairly normal with very little cultural push back, many people in 2023 consider all forms of spanking child abuse. Most would agree that hitting any part of a kid's body is abuse, in the event that an adult is relieving anger. But are there healthy ways of going about spanking children?
Ellen, Amy and Joey were all spanked as children. Amy and Joey reflect on personal childhoods that benefitted from that form of discipline. Ellen however is relentless in her view that spanking is always bad.

EP8 - Hayne Curses God, God's Love Moves in Closer Oct 30, 2023

Show notes

[Hosts Contributing in this episode: Hayne Griffen / Robbie Madison / Joey Svendsen]

Hayne shares the story of breaking his neck in a biking accident and cursing God, only to feel God's love draw in closer as one of the most tangible instances in his life, ever.
Throughout this story, you'll hear how Hayne went from being "fundamentalist, reformed, Hayne" to"mystic Christian Hayne," how him and his wife Erica transitioned to a more simplistic way of life as a result of this horrific accident, why Hayne finds joy in not approaching faith as something to be mastered, and why he sees his Fire Department as his family.
