    A Woman's Body Month (Part 4): Women Sexuality Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

Viewer discretion is always advised, dummies, but this one is a must.
Erica Smith, sexuality educator for 22 years and creator of Purity Culture Drop Out, talks candidly and answers Joey's crazy questions about female sexuality.
According to Erica, there's not a lot of sexual behavior (i.e. masturbation habits, being aroused by visual stimuli ) consistent to a particular gender. In other words, "girls like stuff," just like boys. There is however a lot of sexual tendencies/patterns in society that are affected greatly by cultural conditioning.
What's the biology behind older men remaining sexually attracted to girls in their early to mid-twenties? What does Erica's research say about casual sex and hook-ups? We talk porn, sado masochism, how much sex goes on in nursing homes and many more "blush inducing" topics.

A Woman's Body Month (Part 3): God and Breast Cancer Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

No one is ever prepared for this sort of news. Life is normal for Hayne Griffin and all of the sudden, he has to contemplate losing his spouse. But this is a "Woman's Body Month," who cares about Hayne! (just kidding, Hayne).
Hayne's wife, Erica Griffin, joins the show and the two describe how breast cancer has rocked (and is rocking) their world.
As five folks on this show who have experienced significant faith-deconstruction, there's lots of discussion on our current views of God, sickness and healing in the context of Erica's cancer; and how drastically different from our pre-deconstruction thinking.
Does losing your breasts affect how a woman feels sexually? Why is it easier for Hayne to be an atheist sometimes? Did Erica expect to find herself in heaven in the event she died? And who would have thought, all breasts can be broken down into two groups: fatty or dense. And this is actually important! A little bit of everything on this one.
And we figured out a way to laugh through all this. Beauty of the human spirit. Talking about pain and agony with friends can still include laughter.
Thanks to Erica and Hayne Griffin for sharing their story.

A Woman's Body Month (Part 2): Life as an Asexual Woman Oct 11, 2022
    Show notes

"A Woman's Body Month," sexuality, self-worth and image, the brutality of breast cancer and what it's like not to desire sex, all through the life experiences of women.
On this episode, Amy Alderman and Joey Svendsen talk to Rachel Meyers of Your Favorite Heretics, to gain a better understanding of asexuality. Rachel enjoys "having feelings" for others (she enjoys that with her husband, Derek) and has always enjoyed being pursued. She just never has desired any one's body sexually.
Rachel's form of asexuality not only leaves her disinterested in sex, the thought is repulsive and the act as troublesome as it would be for a gay person to be with the opposite sex or a straight person having sex with the same gender. She relishes complements from women, has to work hard at giving her kids physical affection and loves her husband dearly.
So, what about her husband? Do asexual people like orgasms? Is asexuality an imperfection?
Thanks to Rachel for sharing a part of her life that she would change if she could.
It's "A Woman's Body Month" continues on Pastor With No Answers Podcast. "Brutality of Breast Cancer" with co-host Hayne and his wife, Erica (Oct 18th)
"Woman Sexuality" with Erica Smith (Oct 25th)

    A Woman's Body Month (Part 1): Having a Female Body Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

Kicking off a 4-part series for the month of October, sexuality, self-worth and image, the brutality of breast cancer and what it's like not to desire sex, all through the life experiences of women (but of course!).
Today, co-hosts of the show, Ellen Mauro, Amy Alderman and Liz Miller discuss what pop culture currently deems as the ideal female body type, whether women always care about having sex appeal and if culture is dictating the whole "as men get older, they become more distinguished and as women age, less sexy and desirable" narrative. All three ladies describe with great candor their own struggle with body image, especially as they age. Special thanks to them for that.
Are women competitive with one another? Is it unnerving that statistically, as men get older they always find girls in their early 20s the most appealing sexually? Does culture now accept the sexual objectification of men? Oh, and guys being more visual than women? That may just be a myth.
It's "A Woman's Body Month" on Pastor With No Answers Podcast.
The conversation continues throughout the month:
"Asexuality" with Rachel Meyers of Your Favorite Heretics (Oct. 11th)
"Brutality of Breast Cancer" with co-host Hayne and his wife, Erica (Oct 18th)
"Woman Sexuality" with Erica Smith (Oct 25th)

367 - Mourning Bill Cosby and Learning How to See People Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

Ellen Mauro has found great recent success in medicating her AD/HD. She also got Joey to watch a documentary called "We've Got to Talk About Cosby," which chronicles the twisted and dark life of Bill Cosby, all along while the cultural icon is considered heroic by millions of fans.
Now having watched the documentary, Joey can never enjoy The Cosby Show again. Stoy, Ellen and Joey discuss evil in the context of mental illness and they look at the nuances involved in separating good art from an evil artist. Lastly, Joey and Ellen learn about Stoy's superpower.
For Part II of the episode, John Mark Mcmillan and Joey discuss their journey of judging people less, the older they get. John Mark ran into a famous Mega Church Pastor in an airplane who is a big fan of of John Mark's music, the two of them now friends. Come to find out, although looks can be deceiving, the Mega Church Pastor is actually a real person too.

    366 - Sneaking Communion as a Non-Catholic, Catholic Mass Junkie (w/ Stephanie Drury) Sep 15, 2022
    Show notes

Stephany Drury of Stuff Christians Life, shares a bit of her story of growing up a fundamentalist kid who asked too many questions about God, [because the dots just weren't connecting] while God convicted her heart at an early age that loving God and others is what the "good life" is made of, rather than the emphasis of religion many of us were raised on.
You'll hear why Stephanie loves attending Catholic mass as frequently as she can while deploring a lot of the "laws" in the Catholic church. She believes in transubstantiation (the communion elements actually "turn into" the flesh and blood of Jesus) and has currently found a church community (outside of her Catholic mass intake) that she loves.
What's worst-case scenario for the political landscape in America, how purity culture at Mars Hill church detrimentally affects Ellen years later, the breaking of "generational fundamentalism" in Joey's household, the personal impacts of mental illness and whether Matt misses "Christian fellowship" are other topics of conversations on this one.

365 - The Lord is My Shepherd [I Need to Know What This Means, Because I'm Drowning] Sep 13, 2022
    Show notes

I started reading "The Lord is My Courage," by KJ Ramsey, last week and quickly realized, it would be on a short list of books that did some profound life-changing work deep in my heart that permanently changes my trajectory of faith.
As I've deconstructed a lot of the unhealthy lenses taught to me by fellow brothers and sisters in those unhealthy cultures themselves, my view in how I see our wonderful God was turned upside down for the better as I truly grappled with God's love and what that means, that God loves me.
Where I have felt a bit stuck, was learning how to pursue and relate to my drastically upgraded view of God. This book truly seems to be filling in lots of gaps. Jesus is the shepherd who will seek me when I'm lost; until I'm found. I can trust this. The shepherd is God.

    364 - Bad Theology Kills (w/ Kevin Garcia) Sep 06, 2022
    Show notes

Kevin Garcia, author of "Bad Theology Kills," hangs with hosts Joey and Matt Oxley as they talk about sexual attraction, how to live a life of love in this "woke culture" when you're not all that woke and you mess up people's pronouns, and how bad theology kills people. And if people are actually dying, the church needs to love first, figure out the theology later. Could the the American version of mainstream Christianity actually be heresy? And when people say "the bible says," they actually mean "this is what i believe the bible to say."

363 - When You Did a Lot of Drugs the Night Before Your First Gig, Playing Drums at a Mega Church Aug 30, 2022
    Show notes

Joey is a Pastor at Seacoast Church, the last 13 years at the James Island location, much of that time getting to know Jonathan Peace, our drummer. After years of being embedded into the church community and developing many friendships including with Joey, "Peace" finally tells the story of his first "gig" at Seacoast on a Sunday morning after a full night of booze and smoking cigarettes, tips dipped in cocaine. He had a "magical experience" playing his first worship service at his new church home (to say the least).
Co-host Jed Payne (with plenty of past drug use himself), Joey and Jonathan discuss different angles of drug-use from a moral perspective and explore lots of theological speculation about God and the afterlife.
Jonathan's view of God is greatly informed by a time at the beach when God's hand pressed and held him to the ground, speaking through his heart and body for hours. He's can't unsee what he saw about the spiritual realm that night [and if we're comparing], giving him a much more "progressive theology," at least in the technical sense.

The reason why you'll rarely see modern Christians on the political Left or Right have constructive conversations around politics or social issues - despite claiming a shared faith, tradition, and epistemology - is that we are already so comprehensively formed by our ideological narratives and so woefully underformed or selectively formed by our theological narratives, and it is narrative more than anything else that gives individuals the lenses by which we see the world. This means then we can only be genuinely surprised, and often outraged, that this "other" kind of Christian has the gall to even exist. If life is a story, they are like poorly-written characters inserted to disrupt the satisfying plot of our existing narrative, and we resent them for ruining our story. -- Rev. Colin Kerr

362 - Ask, Seek, Knock, Eat a Mushroom: The Making of a Mystic Aug 23, 2022
    Show notes

Kevin Sweeney, author of, "The Making of a Mystic: My Journey With Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay for Everyone to Relax," didn't find God through religion. His entry-way to faith wasn't wrought with the oppression many of us today are deconstructing from.
"Missionaries" have been thought of as those who are "taking the good news out, to set the captives free." Pastor Kevin claims that his "missionary" was a handful of mushroom trips.
Now that his hallucinogenic experiences have pointed to the wholeness and freedom that can only come from an inherent union with an all-loving God, he has no need for more mushroom, but rather presses on to "live the life" they pointed toward. To do otherwise, he sees as an act of betrayal to the sanctity of the revelation.
At the top of the episode, co-hosts Matt Oxley and Robbie Madison reflect on episode one of the new Seacoast Church Podcast that Joey hosts. Joey and Robbie talk about their relationship with Grammy-winning Brandon Lake and the unique vantage point of watching a friend's career explode. Thanks for listening to The Pastor With No Answers (and friends) Podcast.
