Rock Candy Ep. 88: King Diamond - Quarter Pounder With Bass Oct 02, 2019
    Show notes

It's October and that means it's time for us to talk about musicians who make the creepiest music to get us in the mood for Halloween. We kick things off with someone who has been singing about gore and Satan for decades. King Diamond not only dons the corpse paint but he writes the songs to put chills down your spine. Between the ghosts of children, murder, the devil, and anything spooky in between, King Diamond and Mercyful Fate have inspired the metal bands that followed their footsteps. We talk about the events and line up changes that made them the long-staying band they are today.

And while you're listening, why not get yourself in the mood with a Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout from Southern Tier Brewing Co?

Make it Stop: Tool - 10,000 Days with Jenner Barrington-Ward Oct 02, 2019
    Show notes

DISCLAIMER: Tool fans beware. We will be saying very mean things about the band Tool on this episode of Make It Stop! If you do not want to hear people say mean things about Tool, do not click play.

To everyone else: It's Tool Time. Time to talk about Tool, one of the most divisive bands in rock music. Known for their odd time signatures, snaking arpeggios and minor key dirges, Tool's unique approach to metal has amassed them equal shares of devoted fanatics and vehement detractors. Mike and Heather's guest for this week, Jenner Barrington-Ward, falls squarely into the latter camp, as do your two intrepid hosts. While the band's latest effort Fear Innoculum was surely tempting, we've decided instead to tackle 10,000 Days, an album which even avowed Tool fans have gone on record as despising. Ostensibly a concept album about singer Maynard James Keenan's mother's long, painful battle with paralysis, 10,000 Days slowly becomes a long, painful battle to stay awake, with its confounding 10 minute long alien acid freak-outs, silly lyrics about smoking the pot, and a general sense of overwrought aimlessness. Mike, Heather and Jenner take no prisoners as they relentlessly tear down this bloated, pretentious slog of an album while all the while fearing the inevitable backlash from the Tool Army. RIP our star rating.

Deeper Digs in Rock: To Feel the Music - A Songwriter's Mission to Save High-Quality Audio with Phil Baker Oct 01, 2019
    Show notes

This episode Christian has in studio Phil Baker, CEO of the Neil Young Archives and co-author with Neil of the new book, ‘To Feel the Music: A Songwriter's Mission to Save High-Quality Audio'. A deep dig into why consumers have to live with poor digital audio and how Neil’s crusade to change that is working!

Neil Young took on the music industry so that fans could hear his music - all music - the way it was meant to be heard.

Today, most of the music fans listen to is streamed via online services and highly compressed. It's convenient, but, frustratingly, this comes at the cost of quality. Gone are the days when it was technologically necessary to compress music into the smallest possible file size, yet this remains the industry standard.

The result is music that is robbed of its original quality - muddy and flat in sound compared to the rich, warm sound artists hear in the studio. It doesn't have to be this way, but the record and technology companies have incorrectly assumed that most listeners are satisfied with these low-quality tracks.

Neil Young is challenging the assault on audio quality - and working to free music lovers from the flat and lifeless status quo.

To Feel the Music is the true story of Neil's quest to bring high-quality audio back to music lovers - which he considers the most important undertaking of his career. Inside, follow Neil as he discovers the step by step deterioration of recorded sound as analog is methodically replaced by digital CDs, MP3s, and low-price, low-quality streaming; gathers others committed to his goal of delivering music the way artists intend for it to sound; and eventually develops the Neil Young Archives, a high-res streaming site that gives users unprecedented access to all of Neil's music - in the best quality their devices can handle - videos, photos, and more.

Neil's efforts to bring quality audio to his fans garnered media attention when his Kickstarter campaign for his Pono player - a revolutionary music player that would combine the highest quality possible with the portability, simplicity and affordability modern listeners crave - became the third-most successful Kickstarter campaign in the website's history. It had raised more than $6M in pledges in 40 days. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response, Neil still had a long road ahead, and his Pono music player would not have the commercial success he'd imagined. But he remained committed to his mission, and faced with the rise of streaming services that used even lower quality audio, he was determined to rise to the challenge.

An eye-opening listen for all fans of Neil Young and all fans of great music, as well as listeners interesting in going behind the scenes of product creation, To Feel the Music has an inspiring story at its heart: One determined artist with a groundbreaking vision and the absolute refusal to give up, despite setbacks, naysayers, and skeptics.

Highway Hi-Fi: First Wave Ska Sep 30, 2019
    Show notes

Pantheon proudly welcomes Highway Hi-Fi! Ryan & Joe go track by track through the underbelly of music history using research and trivia to locate the roots of their obsession with vinyl records

In the late 50s, the streets of Jamaica were alit with music. Bands would bang out jazz and rhythm & blues songs every night, catering to large crowds of people desiring only to dance all night.

It was a disco, but outside in the streets, every night of the week, from dusk till dawn, like Mardis Gras and a discotheque crammed into one big outdoor dance-off.

However, there was a singular prevalent problem. The bands...they wanted breaks, and the breaks lasted too long and people wanted to keep going. A compromise of sorts was agreed upon, a sound system would be brought in and allowed to be play records during an intermission.

No one knew it then, but this compromise would eventually be the end of those bands and the start of ska's rise to prominence.

No Filler: Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf Sep 29, 2019
    Show notes

On this jam-packed episode, we worship at the alter of desert deity Josh Homme with our deep dive into Queens of the Stone Age and their 2002 release Songs for the Deaf. In a year with such a wide spectrum for rock music (from Papa Roach to The White Stripes, and Avril Lavigne to Wilco), Songs for the Deaf reminded us that rock can still be heavy, while simultaneously providing some of the catchiest hooks in recent memory. You'll hear clips from the recording sessions, interviews with Homme that dive into his unique guitar sound, and a conversation with producer Eric Valentine that delves deep into the mics and pedals that were used to achieve the guitar sound on the record. There's a lot to cover on this episode, so strap in and crank up the volume as we drive into the desert with Queens of the Stone Age.
