Goldmine: Pink Floyd - The Wall Artist, Gerald Scarfe Mar 15, 2020
    Show notes

There’s no denying the significance of Pink Floyd’s album The Wall but what about the artwork behind the music? Anyone who has that album, seen the 1982 movie The Wall or been to the concerts is familiar with that artwork — artwork down by the remarkable British artist Gerald Scarfe. On this episode, we talk to Gerald about his Wall artwork that will be up for sale via the San Francisco Art Exchange (www.SFAE.com) and its owner Jim Hartley. (See photo here the overwhelming amount of art in this collection.)

Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 67: Single Song Albums Mar 14, 2020
    Show notes

Today, we examine the messages that were delivered by seven of the most famous, and some equally infamous, single track records. The emotional tension that went into making them. The strife that went into releasing them. And the waves that were made by listening to them.

Each with a message beyond their declaration of musical independence. A jazz composer completely undoing the constraining rules of his genre. An Afrobeat icon illuminating the political and social unrest around him. A New York legend aggressively rewriting the boundaries of popular music. A Krautrocker’s exercise in boredom relief. A metal band proving monotony and momentum are as critical to sound as dynamics. An artist’s reflecting on decay, death, and the world burning all around him. An eclectic soundscapist’s unraveling the seeming destruction of the medium of music.

The collective sound of these records are full undefinable parallels...challenging and inviting. Simple and complex. From furious to melancholic. Anxious to gleeful. Structured loops and fractured chaos. The only common bond was a total disregard for what had been done before. Today, the single song albums that changed the landscape of music.

Deeper Digs in Rock: 1973 - Rock at the Crossroads Mar 14, 2020
    Show notes

The Rock N Roll Archaeologists welcomes back the man named after three presidents, Andrew Grant Jackson, where he digs deep into his latest book, 1973: Rock at the Crossroads. 1973 was the year rock hit its peak while splintering―just like the rest of the world. Ziggy Stardust travelled to America in David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane. The Dark Side of the Moon began its epic run on the Billboard charts, inspired by the madness of Pink Floyd's founder, while all four former Beatles scored top ten albums, two hitting #1.

FM battled AM, and Motown battled Philly on the charts, as the era of protest soul gave way to disco, while DJ Kool Herc gave birth to hip hop in the Bronx. The glam rock of the New York Dolls and Alice Cooper split into glam metal and punk. Hippies and rednecks made peace in Austin thanks to Willie Nelson, while outlaw country, country rock, and Southern rock each pointed toward modern country. The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, and the Band played the largest rock concert to date at Watkins Glen.

Led Zep’s Houses of the Holy reflected the rise of funk and reggae. The singer songwriter movement led by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell flourished at the Troubadour and Max’s Kansas City, where Bruce Springsteen and Bob Marley shared bill. Elvis Presley’s Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite was NBC’s top-rated special of the year, while Elton John’s albums dominated the number one spot for two and a half months.

Just as U.S. involvement in Vietnam drew to a close, Roe v. Wade ignited a new phase in the culture war. While the oil crisis imploded the American dream of endless prosperity, and Watergate’s walls closed in on Nixon, the music of 1973 both reflected a shattered world and brought us together

Rock Candy Ep. 109: Billie Holiday - Adorably Delinquent Mar 12, 2020
    Show notes

The story of Billie Holiday is not an easy one to tell. She was complex woman with endless talent. Not only a woman, but a woman of color, she came into the world of jazz and changed it forever. But it wasn't easy. It wasn't ever easy for Billie. From an abusive childhood, to an adulthood fraught with addiction, racism, and troubles with the law, this woman never got a break, but stood to face it every time. With a voice unlike any that was heard before, Billie performed with the likes of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and many more. Lady Day was not given her due in life, but in death, let us celebrate this legendary woman who brought an allure and elegance to jazz.

Make it Stop: March Badness Round 1, Episode 2 - Nickelback vs. Maroon 5 Mar 11, 2020
    Show notes

Round 1 of the 2020 MARCH BADNESS TOURNAMENT continues, this time pitting butt rock legends Nickelback and their 2005 "classic" All the Right Reasons against radio pop stalwarts Maroon 5 and their 2015 album V. Heather and Mike are joined by Make It Stop returnee and extraordinarily funny comedian Katie McCarthy. Together they endure 22 terrible tracks and must make the dreaded decision of which artist has earned a ticket to the semi-finals to take on the first seed, Mr. Worldwide himself, Pitbull. What style of trash will win the day? The sleazy blowjob anthems of Nickelback or the tepid white boy dance pop of Adam Levine and his supposed "band"? Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.
