No Filler Sidetrack: Lazer Guided Melodies - Spiritualized's 4-Suite Space Rock Masterpiece Mar 23, 2020
    Show notes

On this week's Sidetrack we're listening to one of Billy Corgan's favorite bands, Spiritualized, with a couple non-singles from their '92 debut Lazer Guided Melodies. Another example of just how varied the landscape of nineties rock was shaping up to be, LGM is at times quite minimalist and cinematic, and other times much more progressive and heavy, with a solid shoegaze backbone. The album's twelve songs are segued together into four color-coded, cross-faded suites, each one providing their own unique 15-minute dream-pop experience.

    1. Spiritualized - Step Into The Breeze
    2. Spiritualized - If I Were With Her Now
    3. Spiritualized - Angel Sigh
    4. Biosphere - Lounge
    5. Falcons of Fine Dining - Wash Your Hands
    6. Spiritualized - Run

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Nish Kumar Mar 22, 2020
    Show notes

Comedian Nish Kumar says: “Bob Dylan is the most enduring and important creative relationship of my life. If you can’t think of one Dylan song you like, then a part of your humanity may be missing”. When Bob and his band played the Hendrix arrangement of All Along The Watchtower at his first (and only) Dylan concert, it was “one of the greatest moments of my life”. In other words, he’s our sort of chap.

Cheerfully agreeing that “there’s no bore like a Dylan bore”, Nish gives us his takes on Tangled Up In Blue (“I don’t think he’s ever finished it”), The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream and I Shall Be Released. We get the inside story on using Bob as a role model when being booed (“bloody-minded obstinance in the face of people being dicks is very inspiring”) and for personal grooming inspiration (“my hair grows the way it grows because of the Blonde On Blonde album cover”).

Nish Kumar grew up in Croydon, South London. He has a degree in History and English from Durham University. His sold-out solo shows have won awards at the Edinburgh Fringe and toured nationally and internationally to huge acclaim. Nish’s TV appearances include a Netflix Special, The John Bishop Show, Have I Got News For You, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled, QI, Mock The Week, and Live At The Apollo. He has been the presenter of the topical comedy show Newsjack on Radio 4 Extra, hosts television’s very popular The Mash Report on BBC Two and chairs The News Quiz on BBC Radio 4.

Highway Hi-Fi: Desert Island Recordings - Tusk by Camper Van Beethoven Mar 22, 2020
    Show notes

Isolation causes people to do funny things. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes mad, often both. We're both under the recommended self-quarantine and as we're waiting for this pandemic to hopefully quickly subside. We started thinking about albums that were made while in confinement. Many came to mind quickly. The Rolling Stones recorded Exile on Main Street while holed in France avoiding tax penalties. Of course, that is less like quarantine and more like a weekend at Caligula’s. Bon Iver’s post-break-up self induced retreat in a hunting cabin turned into For Emma, Forever Ago. Songs of Pain by Daniel Johnston was recorded in his parents basement as his bipolar swings made social engagements tremendously difficult. The majority of Cat Power’s Moon Pix was written during a terrifying hallucinatory nightmare while left alone in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. And of course, David Allen Coe, Charles Manson, that psycho guy from Burzum, and countless hip hop artists made records while incarcerated.

That's when we remembered Camper Van Beethoven’s Tusk. As we recalled, the band got snowed in at a cabin somewhere in the depths of the California mountains in the late 80s. To stave off boredom, the band did a track by track remake of the Fleetwood Mac maligned bizarro AOR classic, Tusk. CVB got through most of the tracks before the thaw, stashed the tapes, and went about their merry way. Many years later, about to embark on a reunion tour, the band found the tapes, cleaned them up, added and rerecorded bits, and released the record. We both love Camper Van Beethoven and Tusk, so we decided it would be a good exercise in exploring what happens to bands when cabin fever sets in. So, today, break into your emergency vodka, settle into your confinement, and check your supply of toilet paper as we cover the bizarre tale of Camper Van Beethoven’s Tusk.

Dad Bod Rap Pod 110: Count Bass D and Platurn & Edgewize Mar 21, 2020
    Show notes

We are back with a double dose of DBRP. Our entire region of the Bay Area in California is under "shelter in place" orders so we do a quick check-in to see how people are passing the time and staying sane in these crazy times. Then we have a great and frankly inspiring interview with Count Bass D, whose debut album came out 25 years ago and his latest album CBD came out last week. The Count discusses his life growing up playing in church bands, tells great stories about collaborating with MFDOOM, and being treated as a "guest" in hip-hop culture. CBD is full of life and ready to assert himself as one of the only members of his generation still making waves in the culture.

Next up we have a special in-studio interview with Platurn & Edgewize, a DJ/MC duo with a new EP called Apatheater on Needle To The Groove Entertainment (full disclosure, Dave is a partner in the label). They took hip-hop back to the essence of dope beats and dope rhymes with no frills but a modern sensibility on the new project and we were happy to have them on. As you can imagine, it's very hard to promote a record in the current environment and we are happy to provide artists on our wavelength with the opportunity. All beats on this episode except our theme song were produced by DJ Platurn!
