Deeper Digs: Doug “Cosmo” Clifford of Creedence Clearwater Revival May 29, 2020
    Show notes

Christian gets to spend time behind the kit with Creedence Clearwater Revival drummer, Doug “Cosmo” Clifford. They go through his life in music, first with the giants CCR, which between 1966-1973 were one of the most massively successful rock acts to ever hit the charts. Then they talk about the dissolution, the days in Tahoe as environmental activist, losing Tom Fogerty to AIDS, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame debacle, reforming with CCR bassist Stu Cook that toured as Creedence Clearwater Revisited until retiring last year and most importantly, his new album Magic Window, that was mostly recorded in 1985, but now out for release!

Doug Clifford achieved fame as the drummer of Creedence Clearwater Revival, a band he put together with his friends Stu Cook, John Fogerty and Tom Fogerty. They were in junior high school when they started playing and achieved worldwide success after signing with Fantasy Records in 1967. Although best known as a drummer, Clifford sang harmony vocals and contributed songs to the Creedence catalogue. He’s been singing, writing songs and making music for as long as he can remember.

After a lifetime on the road – ten years with Creedence Clearwater Revival and its predecessors and 25 years with Creedence Clearwater Revisited – the band he put together with bassist Stu Cook to perform live tunes from the Creedence catalogue – he’s ready to again make his mark as a singer and songwriter. He’ll be releasing Magic Window, a solo album recorded in 1985 and updated in 2020 on April 24, 2020, on CD Baby and all on streaming platforms.

Clifford wrote the Magic Window songs at his piano at his Lake Tahoe, Nevada home. During downtime, he’d gaze out at the lake and mountains and write, sometimes alone, and sometimes with collaborators. “I had an analog studio with a good tape deck, so I could try out ideas without looking at the clock. I’d invite friends in to jam and experiment. I made Magic Window with Russell DaShiell on lead guitar. Russell’s also an engineer and co-produced the sessions with me. I was going to use it to look for a record deal, but I got busy with other projects and touring. I just forgot about it.”

Some of those projects included producing albums for Doug Sahm of the Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornados, playing in Steve Miller’s band and then joining Stu Cook to play Creedence hits with Creedence Clearwater Revisited. They have performed worldwide for 25 years, amassing many fans and crossing multiple generations to bring the wonderful CCR hits to people. They released an RIAA certified platinum live album.

Last year, while cleaning out his garage, Clifford found the Magic Window masters.

“I’d forgotten about the tapes, but they were in great shape. We were able to transfer the recordings to digital and warm things up a bit. I discovered more than 100 songs.” “Music’s always been a medicine and a meditation for me. It doesn’t matter if I’m down or up. It works both ways. We’ve seen some trying times in the last few years, and we can all use some love and magic. I put my heart and soul into the positive messages on this album. This is a good time to share them with the world.”

See Hear 73: The Kids Are Alright May 29, 2020
    Show notes

The gents at See Hear Podcast want to pose some questions.

    • Do you mind other guys dancing with your girl?
    • Can we buy your magic bus?
    • Have you ever seen pictures of Lily?
    • Can you hear us?
    • Who are you?

Deep philosophical questions indeed. The Who were that type of band – funny, furious and filosophical.....

Welcome to episode 73 of See Hear Podcast.

Tim, Bernie and Maurice welcome back Marvellous Mike White of The Projection Booth Podcast to discuss the 1979 Who “documentary” The Kids Are Alright” (not to be confused with the 2010 film with Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo). Jeff Stein's film is certainly not a documentary in the traditional sense (no chronology, no talking heads retrospectively outlining the history). It IS a celebration of who The Who were up to Keith Moon's death. It shows their ferociousness and humour as a band....so in that sense, even if we discover little about the events that shaped them, by film's end, we know what made them great.

The crew discuss the film, their own connections to The Who's music, sensationalism versus art, Pete's penchant for beating up people on stage, Keith's habit of destroying hotel rooms, and many other Who-vian peripherals.

Is the show worth tuning into? You better, you bet......

Huge thanks once again to Mike White for joining us for this one and being a supporter of our show. Muses: Sharon Osbourne May 28, 2020
    Show notes

While some may think it was Ozzy who introduced Sharon to the world of rock n roll truth is she was partying with the animals long before the Prince of Darkness entered the picture.

Daughter of infamous music manager turned gangster Don Arden, Sharon entered the family business as a teen and soon became her fathers right hand man helping to manage bands such as ELO and Black Sabbath.

When Sabbath fired frontman Ozzy Osbourne for his drug and alcohol addiction, Sharon stood by his side and took over his management, helping to build one of the most successful solo careers of all-time while also falling deeply in love.

While they're love affair has stood the test of time it was certainly not always smooth sailing. Years of addiction and extremely violent behaviour marred their private life, but the pair always managed to pull through the worst of it and will be celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary this summer.

Whether you love them or hate them one thing is for sure, Sharon and Ozzy are pure rock n roll.

Make sure to purchase your copy of Sharon Osbourne's memoir Extreme where ever books are sold.

Rock n Roll Librarian: Rage to Survive - The Etta James Story May 28, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode of the Rock n Roll Librarian, Shelley tells Christian all about the book RAGE TO SURVIVE: THE ETTA JAMES STORY. One of the great women of American music, Etta was equally at home singing blues, R&B, and jazz, and gave us such amazing songs as “I’d Rather Go Blind”, “Tell Mama”, and “At Last”. She regales us with riveting stories of her chaotic youth in Los Angeles, her teen years in San Francisco’s Fillmore district, and her troubled trip to stardom. From being discovered at age five singing in her church choir, to her first hit record, to her work and friendships with Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, and other stars of the Golden Age of Soul, Etta relates with brutal honesty her struggle with drugs, her childhood dealing with an elusive and unstable mother, and her lifelong trouble with brutal and controlling men. A riveting story told in Etta’s own unvarnished and humorously right-on words.By Etta James and David Ritz

Highway Hi-Fi: Desert Island Recordings - Iron Curtain Innocence by Bobb Trimble May 27, 2020
    Show notes

In a sense, private press records are the ultimate form of isolation music. They are albums that are created completely on an island. Often, recorded by a single person. Usually, created without any support or belief. Always, made without the assistance of a label to provide funding, resources, marketing, or expertise. Putting out a private press record is an act of faith. Faith in yourself...that you are an undiscovered and misunderstood musical treasure. Faith that you’ll see a return on your investment…that the thousands of dollars you spend will be come back tenfold with future riches, fame, and respect. Faith in your fans….the ones that don’t yet exist, but will certainly fawn over you when they finally set the needle down on the shiny black vinyl, spinning at a perfect 33 and a third revolutions per minute. Faith in the system….that if you believe and you work hard, you will fulfill your destiny. Faith, that someone cares and empathizes with your point of view. Faith that you might not be alone.

Bobb Trimble might be the king of the private press. He certainly checks most of the boxes that make a private press record highly sought after: Loner outsider musician, hilariously bizarre cover art, strange story, lo-fi recording, minuscule pressing, cited as influential by big-name independent artists. However, what makes him the master of this lost genre is the music itself which is gorgeously detailed, strangely attractive, shockingly accessible and engaging. Music that is not just rehashed and stylized, but something that lives outside the standard comfortable genre descriptors. Somewhere between acid folk, soft rock psychedelic, fuzzy space rock, and power pop with a streak of musique concrete.
