Make it Stop: Liz Phair - Self Titled with VQ Jun 03, 2020
    Show notes

Oh, Liz Phair. An indie darling and feminist rock icon who DIY-ed herself into underground superstardom with her classic 1993 album "Exile in Guyville", Phair had gone through some ups and downs musically and personally after her breakout album, putting out a few quietly mediocre albums in the late 90s and getting married, having a child, and divorcing. So why did, at the age of 36, Liz "Fuck and Run" Phair team up with bubblegum pop wizards The Matrix, known for their songcrafting for teen pop ingenues Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears, to write aggressively bland midtempo cougar pablum? No one knows for sure, and certainly nobody wanted it - not her loyal fans, not the young girls the Matrixified monstrosities on the album were seemingly marketed to, and certainly not rock critics, who famously derided the album, with Pitchfork giving it a legendary 0.0 rating. Liz Phair's 2003 self-titled album is a mainstay on numerous Worst Albums of All Time list. But is it really all that terrible? Mostly, yes. Parsing through the poor decision making is returning guest, BLOWW wrestler VQ, who once again is asked to analyze the motivations of self-absorbed white women. Give us your Hot White Cum, stoppies. No Filler Sidetrack: Hey Mercedes - Frowning of a Lifetime Jun 03, 2020
    Show notes

After the dissolution of Chicago-based Braid, Bob Nanna and Todd Bell took their post-hardcore emo sound and added some melody and pop to it. The result was Hey Mercedes - but the change in sound was likely thanks to Vagrant records. While there are a couple of stand-out tunes on their debut Everynight Fire Works, we conclude along with many of the critics that this album is largely forgettable. But if you're looking to scratch that emo-pop nostalgic itch like we are right now - this album will do just that, even if only for a few minutes.

    1. Hey Mercedes - A-List Actress
    2. Braid - The New Nathan Detroits
    3. Hey Mercedes - Frowning of a Lifetime
    4. Big Bite - Paralyzed
    5. Hovenweep - Cave
    6. Hey Mercedes - The Promise (When In Rome cover)

I'm In Love With That Song: Earth, Wind & Fire - 'Shining Star' Jun 01, 2020
    Show notes

Earth, Wind & Fire's 6th album, That's The Way of The World, was ostensibly a soundtrack album; when the film bombed, the album was on the verge of fading away, too-- until "Shining Star" was released as a single and it became their first (and surprisingly only) #1 Top 10 Hit. The whole band is on fire here; beneath the pop sheen is the heaviest of funk grooves, with particularly tasty guitar & bass work. Let's climb inside this funk machine & see what it took to create this stellar track.

Earth Wind & Fire - "Shining Star" (Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Larry Dunn) Copyright 1975 (Renewed 2003) EMI April Music Inc.

The Band: A History - Moondog Matinee: Part Two May 31, 2020
    Show notes

When The Band entered the studio to continue to record Moondog Matinee, they switched locations. This time they flew out to Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, California to finish the last few songs. Los Angeles had been pulling The Band westward for sometime. With the rest of an album to finish, The Band couldn't turn down a request from George Harrison and Ringo Starr to help them record in the studio as well.

Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 120: Penultimate Fighting with Tajai May 30, 2020
    Show notes

This week the guys welcome special guest Tajai from Souls of Mischief to the show! We are all huge fans of his work and look up to him as an entrepreneur, MC, and just general extremely smart person. In the second segment we take a closer look at Souls' 1998 album Focus, their first independently-distributed work. The beats for this week's show were submitted by Deuce Ellis and Camoflauge Monk from their new project Camo Ellis, which we highly recommend listening to.
