Sample Excavator 06: Yeah! Woo! Jun 14, 2020
    Show notes

For the first time I am tackling a song in the top 10 most sampled of all time list. In fact this week's sample has been used in 2340 other songs in the last decade, making it the third most sampled song of all time. It has been used in 60+ songs in 2019 alone, making it one of the most enduring samples in history. I can't go through all 2300+ uses but I try to break down the most notable and most obscure uses in order to give a complete overview of this legendary sample.

Playlists with all the songs from this week's episode can be found on Apple Music and Spotify under 'Sample Excavator Episode 1.6'

Is It Rolling Bob? Talking Dylan: Danny Horn Jun 14, 2020
    Show notes

Actor/musician Danny Horn, 31, played The Kinks’ frontman Ray Davies in the West End; but it was listening to Dylan at age 14 that changed his life. Do Dylan and Davies have anything in common? Danny tells us that - in 1967/68 - “they both made love letters to versions of their own countries that never existed. And they share a mercurial way of thinking”.

Despite hanging out with Ray D, Danny knows his Bobby D. The conversation ranges from analysis of songs like Abandoned Love (“he’s both wounded puppy and venomous snake”) to the film I’m Not There (yes to Charlotte Gainsbourg, no to Christian Bale). All topped off with a hilarious near-death experience at The Royal Albert Hall. Join us for a funny, socially-distanced but intimate take on “the clown inside” of Bob Dylan.

Danny Horn is an actor and musician, born in London in 1989. He trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and has worked frequently on stage and screen since graduating in 2010. He won acclaim for his performance in the hit West End musical Sunny Afternoon, which charted the early years of The Kinks. Other stage acting work includes The Dead Dogs and The Revenger’s Tragedy. Film and television work includes Emmerdale, Vera, Hetty Feather, Scar Tissue, M.I. High, Legend of the Bogeyman and Doctor Who. With his group the Shared Myths, Danny has just released his first album: Quitting Smoking.

Muses: Ronnie Spector Jun 13, 2020
    Show notes

This week's episode is based on the autobiography of Ronnie Spector: Be My Baby- How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness or My Life as a Fabulous Ronnette.

Ever since Ronnie was a baby, she was singing for people on the subway. Growing up in a musical household, Ronnie would perform with her sister, cousins, aunts and uncles every weekend. Ronnie knew that show business was her destiny, and that music was the only thing she ever wanted to do.

Ronnie, her sister Estelle and their cousin Nedra formed the Ronnettes and performing in New York, and perfecting their live show until they knew it was time that the Ronnettes had to make a record.

Searching for the perfect producer, the Ronnettes reached out to Phil Spector who agreed to record them immediately. Phil knew how to write a song for Ronnie's voice and his famous wall of sound made "Be My Baby" an instant hit, and an all time classic. However, while Ronnie's dream of becoming a famous singer was coming true, her home life and relationship with Phil was becoming a nightmare.

In this story of survival, Ronnie tells the tale of rising to the top of the charts with the Ronnettes, having the Rolling Stones on tour as their opening act, meeting and developing a special friendship with the Beatles and how she was ultimately able to get free from Phil Spector to find her voice again.

Deeper Digs: Tal Wilkenfeld Jun 12, 2020

This episode we get the immense pleasure talking with Tal Wilkenfeld! Known first as an extraordinary bassist playing on just about everyone’s record for the last decade or so, and now her very own solo artist with a record called, ‘Love Remains’, out now!

Rock Candy Ep. 122: The Prodigy - Pretzel and the Ball Jun 11, 2020
    Show notes

This fearless group took electronica to a whole new level in the 90's. Breaking the boundaries of genre by incorporating the sounds of techno, hip hop, rock, and everything in between to create the most unique music the world had heard up to that point. They made it ok for metal heads to want to dance and ravers to want to mosh. The Prodigy just started out as a one man show, that quickly turned into a 3-piece collective, after he let some ravers join in on the fun. Their story is their own, creating music without compromise and proving that they have the talent and inventive nature to show the world what they were missing. Doesn't get much more rock n' roll than this, kids.
