Long May You Young 36: Unplugged / Lucky Thirteen Jan 27, 2021
    Show notes

Since both Lucky Thirteen and Unplugged mostly feature songs that we've covered already, we decided to double them up for this episode. And yes, there are a lot of repeats, but there are so many gems in these records. Russ starts in with more Ben Keith stuff. Mike and Luke fawn over Depression Blues. Russ's boss stops by for the first 15 minutes to talk about a board game he made up. We open a mysterious package left by a certain nail salesman. The boys all fawn over this version of Helpless. We imagine Neil running down Broadway. It's an episode of a Neil Young Podcast, but you know that. I'm mostly just writing it to boost our analytics and get in more google searches. Neil Young podcast.

Long May You Young is a proud member of Pantheon Podcasts. Pantheonpodcasts.com for more goodness.

Performance Anxiety: Corey Ledet Jan 27, 2021
    Show notes

Today we are joined by royalty. Corey Ledet’s family has been at the forefront of jazz, bebop, blues, & zydeco from the beginning. His grandfather, Buchanon, is known as the originator of the double clutch drum pattern that defines zydeco. Corey started in his grandfather’s footsteps, as a drummer, playing professionally by the ripe old age of ten. But things really started to click when he took up the accordion.

One of Corey’s albums was nominated for a Grammy (I think the only reason it didn’t win was because Corey forgot to vote for himself). He has just released the 14th album of the band’s 18th year career. Follow Corey Ledet for information about the music. Buy the new album, Corey Ledet Zydeco wherever you normally buy music. Buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. There’s no commitment. Merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Subscribe, rate, review. Now let’ get to steppin right into Corey Ledet on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

See Hear 81: The Stoned Age Jan 27, 2021
    Show notes

Three grown men over the age of 40 (two Brits and an Australian) walked into a podcast to discuss a film about two teenage American guys from the seventies looking to get stoned, drunk and laid.

Welcome to episode 81 of See Hear Podcast – the start of our 8th year.

Tim is still on sabbatical, but Bernie and Maurice were joined by host of The Iron Sequel podcast, James Lawrence, to talk about the 1994 film The Stoned Age. It's a “set in one night” film (a genre unto itself) telling the story of two friends who want to party with a couple of girls visiting LA (was “party” always a verb?). Obviously, there are obstacles (otherwise there's no story). Blue Oyster Cult are a big part of the story (there had to be SOME music connection for it to qualify as a See Hear episode, you see....)

We talk about one-night-films, films that focus on nostalgia, musical true believers, and ask the questions about older films that some will consider problematic in 2021.

Bernie and I are grateful to James for suggesting the film and giving us his time to talk about his love of it. You can search out The Iron Sequel wherever you get podcasts, or from the website https://theironsequel.podbean.com/ You can follow his activities on Twitter at https://twitter.com/blazingmagnums

Rock's Backpages Ep.92: Nick Coleman on Voices + Phil Spector + Miles Copeland Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, we welcome the excellent Nick Coleman into RBP's snug virtual cupboard. Barney, Mark & Jasper quiz Nick about his distinctively personal music writing for the NME, Time Out and the Indie on Sunday, with especial reference to his 1986 interview with jazz-soul siren Anita Baker. This leads seamlessly to discussion of his terrific 2017 tome Voices: How a Great Singer Can Change Your Life, as well as to the harrowing experience of hearing loss that inspired 2012's The Train in the Night.

In this episode, it was impossible to ignore the death of monstrous megalomaniac and murderer Phil Spector. After hearing a chilling audio clip of him speaking to Roy Carr in 1975, Nick and his hosts attempt to separate the man from the visionary architect of the "Wall Of Sound". (Now a certified psychotherapist, Nick compares Spector's narcissistic personality disorder to that of Donald Trump, who finally vacated the White House the day before this recording.) We also bid farewell to Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher, whose lyric for 'The Message' made rap superstars of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and played a huge part in the birth of "conscious hip hop".

Somewhat less megalomaniacal than Spector is Miles Copeland III, whose rapid-fire voice we hear in audio clips from 1989. The man who seemed fated to follow in his dad's C.I.A. footsteps tells John Tobler how bankruptcy made him switch from Wishbone Ash to Wayne County – and how he launched I.R.S. Records as a home for R.E.M., the Go-Go's and Fine Young Cannibals.

Finally, Mark talks us through his highlights among the 100+ new arrivals in the RBP library, including Dan Nooger reviewing our previous podcast guest John Simon live at Max's Kansas City in 1972; Mary Harron explaining U.K. punk to her U.S. readers in 1977; and Deanne Stillman reporting on America's enduring heavy-metal subculture in 1991. Jasper concludes matters with passing remarks on avant-jazz enigma Albert Ayler and the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest, staged in the tiny Irish town of Millstreet…

Many thanks to special guest Nick Coleman; The Train in the Night and Voicesare published by Penguin.

The Rock's Backpages podcast is part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Pieces discussed: Donald Fagen, Anita Baker, How to be Keef, Phil Spector audio, Phil Spector, Phil Spectorer, Phil Spectorest, Miles Copeland audio, Herb Alpert, U.K. punk, Blondie, Heavy Metal Mania, Bob Dylan, John Simon, Al Green, CDs vs LPs, Harold Budd, Midlake, Marc Zermati, Ant & Dec, Albert Ayler and the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest.
