Decibel Geek 439: Conversation with Ron Keel Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

This week we're joined by Ron Keel for an insightful conversation on his career and future plans. As recently announced, Ron has been added to the roster for ROCKNPOD weekend taking place in Nashville this August. In this conversation, Ron talks about his early days in Nashville. Coming to Music City in 1979, Ron encountered a much different Nashville than the way it is today. In this discussion, he shares stories of what led him to Nashville, the rock scene at the time (or lack thereof), and how he planted roots and founded Steeler. The formation of Steeler would lead Ron and the band to Los Angeles in the early 80's. In this conversation, Ron shares the story of the band's early days, lineup changes, and how he feels about the legacy of the band. Things would go full-circle in 2019 when Ron reunited with several past members of the band at KEELFEST which would take place at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, OH. It was a great way to cap off the history of Steeler.

Steeler would give way to the formation of KEEL. The band would ascend the rock ranks through the 80's and work with producers like Mike Varney, Gene Simmons and Michael Wagener. In 1986, Keel won the Best Band of the Year award in the second annual Metal Edge magazine reader's poll, beating such noted bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Their studio albums 'The Right to Rock,' 'The Final Frontier,' and 'Keel' are celebrated by many hard rock fans. 2010's 'Streets of Rock n' Roll' showed the band could still rock with the best of them.

From that first Steeler album to recent releases like “South X South Dakota” and “Fight Like A Band,” Ron Keel’s 35-year career in entertainment has taken him from the concrete jungles of arena rock to the dirt roads of country music. Along the way, he has sold millions of albums and toured the world as both a heavy metal screamer (KEEL, Steeler, and a brief encounter with Black Sabbath) and a southern rock/outlaw country artist (with dozens of songs in major films and TV shows). For the past two decades, the Metal Cowboy has combined both genres, establishing a style and a persona which captures the heart and personality of this self-proclaimed rock n’ roll outlaw.

In this conversation, Ron talks about the great connection he has with his fans. His following spans generations and he regularly interacts with them through his Patreon content which is uploaded constantly. He also shares some details of an upcoming album that he's working on as songs continue to flow. Additionally, Ron hosts his longtime radio show 'Streets of Rock n' Roll' and 'The Ron Keel Podcast,' both of which feature tons of great music and great interviews.

We had a great time talking to Ron Keel this week and look forward to seeing him at ROCKNPOD in Nashville this August! Get all-things-Ron-Keel at www.ronkeel.com!

We hope you enjoy our Conversation with Ron Keel and SHARE with a friend!

Rock's Backpages Ep.93: Nick Kent on the NME + Iggy Pop audio + Sophie R.I.P. Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode we welcome the legendary Nick Kent as our very special guest. Unarguably the most famous British rock writer from the golden era of '70s rock journalism, Nick tells Barney, Mark & Jasper how he began writing for the underground Frendz and then for Nick Logan's super-hip New Musical Express. Recollections of Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson and the Rolling Stones lead inevitably to tales of self-indulgence and self-destruction — and eventually to Nick's sometime drug buddy Iggy Pop, who is heard speaking in March 1977 about his beloved proto-punk band the Stooges and about his new Bowie-produced solo album The Idiot.

The conversation turns briefly to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain before we pay our respects to departed Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine and then — led by a very eloquent Jasper — to the extraordinary electronic producer and trans icon SOPHIE. Among the new library articles Mark highlights are pieces about Cream's Eric Clapton, Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City, Fun Boy Three and 12" disco master-mixer Tom Moulton. For reasons that will be obvious to many of you, Nick pitches in after Mark quotes from Barry Cain's 1978 Record Mirror interview with PiL's John Lydon and Jah Wobble. Jasper wraps up the episode with passing remarks on Simon Reynolds' 2017 retrospective on Donna Summer's epic 'I Feel Love'...

Many thanks to special guest Nick Kent; his novel The Unstable Boys is published by Constable and out now.

Pieces discussed: Nick Kent on David Bowie, Nick Kent on Brian Wilson, Nick Kent on Iggy Pop, Nick Kent on Kurt Cobain, Chris Salewicz on Nick Kent, Iggy Pop audio, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl, The Animals, SOPHIE, Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix, New York Dolls, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash, Sound of the City, Public Image Limited, Fun Boy Three, Tom Moulton, Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder and Jon Bon Jovi.

No Filler: Jesse Johnson & The Minneapolis Sound Feb 08, 2021
    Show notes

As part of his contract with Warner Bros., Prince was able to recruit and produce his own artists. One of those bands was The Time, formed in 1981 fronted by Morris Day with Jesse Johnson on lead guitar. Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Time's blend of funk rock with elements of synth-pop and new wave was the origin of what came to be known as the Minneapolis sound. A collection of songs written by Prince that allowed him to experiment and be a bit edgier than the music he wrote under his own name, The Time's debut is an absolute blast of a gem from that era, with Jesse Johnson shredding on the guitar in moments that rival the best of 80s glam metal. We play a couple of tracks off his solo record Jesse Johnson's Revue, where he carried the torch of The Time and continued to cultivate that unmistakable Minneapolis sound.

    Tracklist:

    1. Jesse Johnson - Be Your Man
    2. The Time - 777-9311
    3. The Time - Cool
    4. The Time - Jungle Love
    5. Jesse Johnson - Just Too Much
    6. Jesse Johnson - Special Love
