GOLDMINE: Pop Hits We Love and Loathe Feb 22, 2021
    Show notes

We all have them: pop songs we love and pop songs we loathe. There are songs that we love from the moment we hear them — and we know exactly why. And then there are certain songs — while being bestselling songs, well-crafted and well-performed — can still hit a certain nerve that can have us leaving the room on first note. It's nothing personal, it all depends on the individual.

On this episode, two podcasters talk about their own personal pop songs that they have loved and loathed throughout their lives for various reasons. It's all in good fun, and maybe listeners can submit some of their own choices.

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Tom Jackson Feb 22, 2021
    Show notes

To mark our 50th episode, writer and podcaster Tom Jackson gives us his clear-eyed take on Dylan’s “Born Again” albums: Slow Train Coming, Saved, Shot Of Love and Trouble No More. “Slow Train Coming is not a smooth record, not a pleasant record, but I enjoy the tension.” And the accompanying live performances? “They were church services, really. But why is Dylan so angry? That terrible, clear-eyed vitriol. He’s got the answer but he’s still furious! I think he enjoyed baiting his audience, messing with people’s minds”. In a 50th outing overflowing with colourful opinions, Tom brings it all back home: “Dylan does nothing straight. I imagine when he puts his Ocado delivery in, there’ll be a note or a poem in it! His older persona, the grizzled storyteller full of wisdom and foolishness, is so appealing”.

Tom has collected postcards for as long as he can remember. He is the author of Postcard From The Past, 4th Estate (‘A book of rare and genuine beauty’ James O’Brien). He has written about postcards for The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Big Issue and talked about them on Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 5, Talk Radio, BBC local stations and Monocle 24. He has produced documentaries for Radio 4 including Postcards From The White City. The Postcard From The Past book started life as Twitter account @pastpostcard, which attracts over 13 million impressions a month. He hosts Podcast From The Past, (“Fascinating, funny, poignant" BBC Radio 4Extra) in which he chats to well-known guests about postcards and their lives.

Kerry and Luke were guests in 2020:

See Hear 82: Interview with Colm Forde of Doc 'n' Roll Feb 19, 2021
    Show notes

Bernie, Tim and I have never ceased to be amazed at the creativity and hard work that must go into making a film (any work of art, really). One thing we've never spoken about on the show is the art of film curation - a subject that Martin Scorcese himself has recently written about.

Welcome to episode 82 of See Hear Podcast.

Bernie and I spoke with Colm Forde, a man who took it on himself to start a film festival in London devoted to music documentaries – a strong part of See Hear's foundation. The festival itself has spread around the UK over the last few years. Colm had grand plans for further the festival, but....ya know....bloody Covid....so he and his team focused on their VOD service. All music docs....all of the time. The best thing is the films are NOT geo-blocked (unlike so many streaming sites – and new Facebook policy for some media websites in Australia)

We discussed the trials and tribulations of film distribution, the delicate art of film selection, why we're living in a glory day for these sorts of films, and naturally, some of his favourite music documentaries – on and off the channel.

Many thanks to Colm for his time. If you want to see the amazing selection of films on the VOD check the website out at https://www.docnrollfestival.com/

Rock and Roll Heaven: Heavy Hitter - Adam Yauch Pt 3 Feb 19, 2021
    Show notes

Evolved... that was the one-word Adam's peers used to describe him. This week, we learn why that was the case. From practical jokes to studio innovation, Yauch and the Beastie Boys grew out of the party-boy image of the 80's. This lead Yauch on a journey of faith that opened his heart to people both across the world, and right in his own backyard.
