Rock N Roll Librarian: Shout, Sister, Shout! - The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe Mar 12, 2021
    Show notes

Praise the Lord! Shelley and Christian discuss the “Godmother of Rock and Roll”, whose obscure tale is told in the book Shout, Sister, Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe by Gayle F. Wald, 2007. Brought up in the Pentecostal church where congregants celebrated God with lively, joyful, rhythmic music using voice, trumpets, tambourines, pianos, organs, and guitars, Sister Rosetta brought rhythm and swing, her powerful voice, her charisma and her own brand of guitar playing out into the world. This Black woman’s achievements on the electric guitar have been minimized, but her distinctive fills and thrilling solos were revolutionary and influenced the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and a host of British blues aficionados like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. Join us to experience the story and music of Sister Rosetta, who was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

    The Devil's Music 22: Jennifer Finch of L7 Mar 11, 2021
    Show notes

Multi-talented Jennifer Finch is a force of nature: musician, photographer, record producer, actor, boundary pusher and often, the smartest girl in the room. Best known as bassist, vocalist and songwriter for L7, she also kicked ass in Other Star People and The Shocker. In this episode, Jennifer and hostess Pleasant Gehman recall the Los Angeles indie scene in the late ‘80’s and early 90s, dishing on Courtney Love, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion, Mad Society and the legendary LA club The Starwood. They get into what it was like for to work with director John Waters in “Serial Mom”, wild L7 touring stories, numerology, Sassy Magazine, taking drugs and getting tattoos while underage and more stream-of-consciousness insanity.

Songfacts Podcast: Jock Bartley and Mark Andes of Firefall Mar 11, 2021
    Show notes

Firefall didn't set their sights on soft-rock stardom, but they were stuck with it when "You Are The Woman," from their debut album, dug a trench on Adult Contemporary radio, enduring as a staple of at-work listening.

On this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, we welcome founding members Jock Bartley and Mark Andes. Jock, on guitar, is Firefall's mainstay, part of every iteration. Mark, their bass player, left in 1980 and returned in 2014. Pre-Firefall, Jock toured with Gram Parsons' band; Mark was a member of Spirit when they toured with Led Zeppelin in 1968 and 1969 - their song "Taurus" seeped into "Stairway To Heaven." He left Firefall in 1980 and picked up with Heart a few years later, just in time for their astounding resurgence.

The main songwriters in Firefall were Rick Roberts, last with the band in 1992, and Larry Burnett, who left in 1981. Roberts delivered "You Are The Woman" and the mellow follow-up "Just Remember I Love You"; Burnett came up with the fan favorite "Cinderella."

Firefall has been mostly a live act the last few decades, but they put together an album called Comet that was finally released in December 2020 following coronavirus-induced delays. The lead single, "Way Back When," is a trip through three distinct years: 1965, 1967, and 1969. Jock does an acoustic version at the end of show.

Performance Anxiety: Peter Holmstrӧm (The Dandy Warhols) Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

We welcome the arrival of Peter Holmstrӧm. In addition to playing guitar for The Dandy Warhols, he’s been busy with his project Pete International Airport. He explains how that began and who else is involved. We also get some great Dandy’s history. They’ve been together for over 25 years, so they’ve done just about everything you can think of, including writing both the longest AND the shortest songs you can imagine. Pete talks about the band’s relationship with David Bowie and how that started and how they got to play live with him. We wrap up with some great news about some new projects Pete is involved in, including a third Pete International Airport album! Follow him on social media (most of them are petedx11), follow the Dandy’s, follow us @PerformanceAnx. Subscribe, rate, review. I’m still taking non-committal coffee @ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch with our logo (designed by Mark Dancey of Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger fame) is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. So fasten your seatbelts and bring your seats to an upright position. It’s time for Peter Holmstrӧm of The Dandy Warhols & PIA on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Make It Stop: March Badness PART DEUX Round 1, Episode 2: Train vs. 21 Pilots (w/ Nick Ortolani) Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

On Make it Stop we continue to hone in on a central thesis of bad music - that no matter the genre, no matter the age or era, all bad music begins to flow together into the same swirling cesspool of shit. Nowhere is this more apparent than in tonight's episode of March Badness pitting whiny wine mom fantasy husband Pat Monahan and his band Train against nu-indie-rap-emo-Christian-rock disasters Twenty One Pilots. There exists a synchronicity of sanctimonious and deeply inane drivel so intense that there are several points in which the tracks blend seamlessly into one another, one ukelele riff at a time, synthetic hand clap in hand clap. Joining us on this doomed journey is returning guest and Boston comedian Nick Ortolani, who almost fully cracks as we deep dive into the shallow crevices of these cursed albums. It's a race to the bottom as we duke it out song by song to see which terrible white men are the least worst, and you'll be tearing your hair out till the very end. This is not a Drive By, stoppies. We're just shy guys, looking for a two-ply Hefty bag to hold our love. Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Rock Candy Ep. 154: Sia - Peak Big Pharma Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

First she tried to make a name for herself as a singer. Then she tried to make one as a songwriter. And now, she's both. Sia has been around a lot longer than most might realize, getting her start in the late 90s and quickly realizing that being on stage caused some real anxiety. Soon she would fall down the path of drugs and alcohol, yet still be one of the hardest working and most creative musicians in the pop world. We tell her story from childhood to now; the trauma that let to some bad choices and her ability to heal from it and her addictions.
