No Filler: Beyond Zombie - The Overlooked Gems From The Cranberries First Three Records May 10, 2021
    Show notes

You've heard "Dreams" and "Linger". You've probably heard "Zombie" close to a gazillion times by now. But as we like to say around here, it's often the tracks between the singles that need another listen (or for some - a first listen). We dive into The Cranberries' first three records and marvel over how unmatched Dolores O'Riordan's powerful and unique vocals were in the 90s rock landscape, and how refusing to shed their Irish origins made her voice that much more powerful by giving western audiences a perspective we may never have heard.

    Tracklist:

    1. The Cranberries - Reason
    2. The Cranberries - Pretty
    3. The Cranberries - Still Can't
    4. The Cranberries - Yeats' Grave
    5. The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again
    6. The Cranberries - I Just Shot John Lennon
    7. The Cranberries - Bosnia
    8. The Cranberries - Linger (live from MTV's Most Wanted)

The Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Famous First Lines #2: Chiming In May 10, 2021
    Show notes

In our second episode of Famous First Lines, not only are the lyrical opening couplets key, but the resounding "chime" that signals the true start to The Beatles' "Hard Day's Night," and U2's "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" are also a commonality! Markus and Ray discuss both of these songs and those sounds that tell you just what you're in for in the remainder of each!

Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!!

Performance Anxiety: Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes May 10, 2021
    Show notes

Josh Caterer is our guest. And he’s got quite a story. He started a band with two brothers which became the Smoking Popes. They decided to let Josh sing because he was the best at singing and playing while not looking at his hands. They quickly went from recording 18 songs in a day to opening for bands like Green Day. There’s a funny story about that. But with all that success came a pretty big fall in the form of a cocaine overdose. Josh survived and found a new purpose in his Faith. But trying to integrate that into his music was a challenge. After forming Duvall, forming his occasional blues band Jackson Mud, and then returning to Smoking Popes, Josh is releasing a new live solo album. It’s a mix of Popes songs and cover songs. Pick up physical copies from Pravda Records or digitally on Bandcamp. Follow Josh @joshcaterer. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. We accept coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. I hope you enjoy Josh Caterer on Performance Anxiety part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Songfacts Podcast: Donna Jean Godchaux of the Grateful Dead May 09, 2021
    Show notes

Donna Jean Godchaux is the only woman to ever be a member of the Grateful Dead. Along with her husband Keith, she was in the group from 1972-1979 as a singer and songwriter. She joined them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Pre-Dead, Godchaux sang backup in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, appearing on the Percy Sledge classic "When a Man Loves a Woman." She later sang back up on two of Elvis Presley's most famous songs: "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto."

In this episode, we talk about those Elvis sessions and get the story behind a song she wrote for the Dead called "Sunrise," which appears on the Terrapin Station album. But we start the show with the story behind "Shelter," a song she wrote in 2007 with her guitarist, Jeff Mattson, that she remixed and re-released in 2021.

Long May You Young 49: Are You Passionate (w/ John Craigie) May 09, 2021
    Show notes

The results are in, Youngsters. We are passionate about Are You Passionate!

The incredible John Craigie joins us for a second time, this time to talk about Neil's second album of the 2000's. And boy do we have mixed thoughts. We talk about Booker T. Jones meets Ol' Silver Gold. We get really close to getting into 9/11 conspiracies, but we show a little restraint. Luke wonders why McGruff the crime dog didn't make it into the liner notes. Russ thinks this album would have fit well in the middle of Neil's 80's records.

Apologies in advance for the not-as-stellar audio quality. I'm still working out the kinks for zoom episodes.
