I'm In Love With That Song: George Harrison - "Beware Of Darkness" May 15, 2021
    Show notes

George Harrison emerged from the rubble of The Beatles breakup with all cylinders firing. After years of working in John & Paul's shadow, George had amassed a stockpile of great songs. It all burst out in 1970 on his triple-album set, All Things Must Pass. One of the standout tracks was "Beware Of Darkness", a warning to everyone (including himself) to be wary of corrupting influences. Featuring an all-star band, wall-of-sound production, and the introduction of George's slide guitar playing, which would define his sound for the rest of his career. Let's listen to the song many consider George's masterpiece.

Deep Dive All Music Books 53: Somewhere You Feel Free -Tom Petty and Los Angeles with Christopher McKittrick May 15, 2021
    Show notes

When Tom Petty arrived in Los Angeles in 1974 the Gainesville, Florida native found exactly what he was looking for in L.A.,rom the earliest Heartbreakers concerts in Los Angeles at the legendary Whisky a Go Go and the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, to the band’s final concerts at the iconic Hollywood Bowl, Petty aimed to continue the tradition of the Southern California rock and roll. At the same time, Petty’s career often coincided with seismic shifts in the music business, such as Tom’s refusal to back down to label management, industry conventions, and the changing courses of music platforms such as rock radio, MTV, and MP3s and streaming.

Author Christopher McKittrick talks to us about the artistic life of Tom Petty through his career-long relationship with Los Angeles and the many colorful characters and venues that inspired him and his music.

    Crime in Music 66: I'm NOT a Person, I'm the 2010 Love Parade! May 15, 2021
    Show notes

What started out as the most awesome birthday party ever turned into Germany’s Love Parade. This became one of the largest Techno Events in Europe. Dozens of customized audio trucks, loaded with thousands of dollars in audio equipment manned by the greatest DJs on the planet toured the city blasting out the latest and greatest the Techo, Scrance and Gabber music at that time.

As the parade grew, so did their critics. After years of battling the local government for permits and permissions, the Love Parade had changed into a Music Festival in the Ruhr Valley area of Germany. In 2010, at an old railway shipyard, equipped to handle 250K people, a crowd crush takes the lives of more than a dozen people when 1.5 million people attempt to attend the festival.

Pop on your party boots and glow clothes, let’s see if we can get into the greatest amateur circus on earth, it’s the 2010 Love Parade Music Festival!

Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 93: Ringo Tribute Songs May 15, 2021
    Show notes

From 1963 to 1967 hundreds of songs about the Beatles, but not by the Beatles, were issued by no-name artists on tiny fly-by-night labels. An unimaginable amount of these mop top dedications were simply trying to scrape the bottom of the barrel of Beatlemania Bucks. And while the whole band received an unending amount of adulation from the masses of music makers, one member had an almost metaphysical magnetism for bad musicians: Mr. Ringo Starr.

In this episode, we are going to explore America’s Jingoism for Ringoism. The ladies who love the goofball percussionist and the men who love to hate him. Odes to the drummer who is better than the best. Or at least better than Pete Best. And the scores of singers who can’t possibly imagine a better subject matter than those shaggy locks and that Gomer Pyle grin. Listening to this music...it don't come easy. But we’re going to brave the bewildering and backbreaking Beatlemania Bacchanalia to bring you a bounty of the best bedeviling Beatle bauble by bewitched Beatle buffs. In this episode, Ringo Songs.

Songfacts Podcast: Hello Mary May 12, 2021
    Show notes

When you think of alternative, grunge or garage band, what do you think of? It takes me to a time in the early '90s that gave us a new sound and a bunch of great bands: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains.

I was taken to that time again when I was introduced to the female trio named Hello Mary. These three young ladies are combining their sound of fuzzy guitar riffs, big drum fills and uniquely designed bass runs with impressive harmonies to differentiate their style and take the grunge sound of that time into our ears today.

Please welcome Helena Straight, Mikaela Oppenheimer and Stella Branstool of Hello Mary as I catch up with them in Brooklyn to talk about some of their old and new songs, and hear a performance of their new tune "Take Something."
