Songfacts Podcast: Leigh Kakaty of Pop Evil May 21, 2021
    Show notes

Pop Evil has been making pulse-pounding rock with a positive message for 20 years now, defying the long odds every step of the way. Bands aren't supposed to break out in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and they're not supposed to pay their dues playing covers, but frontman Leigh Kakaty knew better than to head for a coast and abandon their support system, and those covers paid the bills. It was rough going, especially when their major label deal went horribly wrong, but this is a resilient bunch, and struggle only seems to strengthen their resolve and fuel their musical fires.

On this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, Kakaty talks about some of their key tracks and explains the band's philosophy. On May 21, 2021, Pop Evil release their latest album, Versatile.

    The Devil's Music 27: Miss Guy May 20, 2021
    Show notes

Guy Furrow, aka Miss Guy is a multi-talented rock’n’roll legend: singer for the acclaimed punk/glam band The Toilet Boys, deejay, music producer, songwriter photographer and makeup artist. Born in Southern California, he came of age and hit his creative stride in the New York City rock scene when it was still something to be wildly excited about. He became fast friends and collaborators with his mentors Deborah Harry and Boy George; his duets with both can be heard in this episode. The Toilet Boys toured North America, Europe and Asia with The Ramones, Motorhead, The Damned, Joan Jett, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. As a deejay, he’s spun worldwide, everywhere from Manhattan clubs to high fashion shows and even art museums. Guy’s photography is beyond-especially since so many of his subjects are rock stars and glamorous drag queens. In this episode, Miss Guy and hostess Pleasant Gehman talk about New York City in the 90’s: wild times and the notorious club/party Squeeze Box; his wildest tour stories, spirit communication in dreams. They dish on Angela Bowie, Jayne County and iconic rock photographer Leee Black Childers...and about spooky hookups a la “The Blair Witch Project” in the middle of a forest.

    See Hear 85: Hellzapoppin' May 20, 2021
    Show notes

The early history of musicals often includes romantic comedies with slight plots as an excuse for big song and dance numbers (often in the context of “let's put on a show”). The romantic sub-plot is a big criticism of the Marx Brothers films at MGM, getting in the way of the anarchy of the masters of mirth.

In 1941, a musical was released by Universal that broke all the rules of narrative and made fun of those romantic subplots.

Welcome to See Hear Podcast episode 85.

After 3 years on Broadway, a Vaudeville revue of song and sketches called Hellzapoppin' was made into a film. Knowing that it was unfilmable in its stage form, it was recreated as something completely different. This may not have been the first film to smash down the 4th wall, but it made it into an artform. Hellzapoppin' also features satire, surrealism, self mockery a film within a film within a film....and some great dancing and even a few good songs (we ARE a music film podcast, after all).

A plot description of Hellzapoppin' would not do it justice..... Marx Brothers mixed with Warner Brothers cartoons is the best I can come up with. Check out the film at https://youtu.be/c2TOriWWSLE then listen to our thoughts. Bernie, Tim and I acknowledge that in many respects the film is way ahead of its time (we discuss what we believe it influenced) and in others is of its time. We don't all agree on its merits, but we had a great discussion and hope you enjoy.

Goldmine: Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes May 20, 2021
    Show notes

Vocalist/guitarist Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes is the guest on the Goldmine Podcast. He discusses the 40th anniversary of the formation of the folk-punk band with bassist Brian Ritchie and original drummer Victor DeLorenzo, and with that the recent vinyl release of the compilation Add It Up (1981–1993) — originally produced for CD in 1993 — and its unique track listing.

Performance Anxiety: Astrid Young May 19, 2021
    Show notes

Astrid Young comes from a long line of creative people. Her father is legendary writer, journalist, & author Scott Young. And her brother is...well her brother is Neil Young. Those are some tough acts to follow. Astrid talks about growing up and getting into music in her own way. She describes what it was like when Neil asked her to sing on Harvest Moon. There are some great stories about the Unplugged show and Road Rock. She’s also done some cool work with Nancy Wilson, Heart, and her own solo work, which is clearly different from her brother’s music. She’s played metal, desert rock, folk, and some wild alternative music. And she wrote and starred in a movie and wrote a biography (which she is considering expanding on, with the help of her brothers). Her latest album features Victor DeLorenzo on drums and the Integratron. Definitely look into the album and the structure. Give her a follow on IG @wandaplez to keep up with what she’s up to. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Rate & review us because it helps get us in front of people. We accept coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now buckle up because there’s a lot going on on this one with Astrid Young on performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.
