Long May You Young 51: Greendale May 28, 2021
    Show notes

We've arrived at Greendale. And what a perfect way to head into our second year of this beautiful wonderful nonsense that we call a podcast. Seriously though, what an album. More than that. What a world! Whatever Greendale is supposed to be or not be, all your hosts agree Neil executes everything perfectly. Down to the little details in each song. We get into the geography of the town, the way the Horse perfectly handles carrying the story, and who we'd cast in an HBO series based on the album. It's a long one, but honestly we could have talked for three more hours about these songs and characters Neil created. And we probably will. There's so much more to Greendale than just the one album, I'm sure we'll get back into it down the road at some point.

Love That Album Ep. 145: Dan Warner and James Stewart of The Warner Brothers May 27, 2021
    Show notes

Melbournians are a resilient lot. We had some of the harshest lockdowns anywhere in the world during 2020 (very necessarily – I won't argue with anyone on that point). Most of us got through it with good humour, grace, and countless Zoom meetings. One song kept going through my head the whole time – it should have become the Victorian state anthem....that song was “Stuck In Melbourne” by The Warner Brothers.

Welcome to episode 145 of Love That Album.

Back in the mid 80s, musicians and songwriters, Dan Warner and James Stewart started performing around Melbourne as a duo before expanding to a full band lineup calling themselves The Warner Brothers, heavily influenced by rootsy / Americana styles. They played many many shows around town, and truly lived the rock and roll lifestyle. Under that name they independently released the excellent Talking In Your Sleep album (years before crowd-funding was an even an idea never mind a reality).

Who would have thought that a big international film and music conglomerate would threaten a small Melbourne band over their name??? They changed their name to Overnight Jones, recorded a couple of albums, then went their separate ways in the late 90s. All went on to other projects, before reforming annually for one-off shows to the faithful.

I'm thrilled to have Dan and James on the show to talk about their experiences with radio programmers, record producers, and band bookers. I found the conversation entertaining as hell...they are passionate about music.....and we discuss their back catalogue as well.

The WB / OJ albums are currently not in print, but listen for a great announcement late in the show for their forthcoming reissue. Meanwhile you can get Dan and James great solo albums from

    https://danwarner.bandcamp.com/ and https://jamesstewartcarcane.bandcamp.com/

Download this episode of LTA from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”).

Make it Stop: Crash Test Dummies - Give Yourself a Hand (w/ Mistress Carrie) May 26, 2021
    Show notes

MMM MMMM MMMM...nah. The world was briefly captivated in the early 90s by Brad Roberts' low, smoldering baritone and his band of eccentric Canadian rockers the Crash Test Dummies. The one hit hit hard, but after a string of sloppy follow ups, the Dummies were in the doldrums by the time 1999's Give Yourself A Hand rolled around. To switch things up they decided to have Roberts sing in a falsetto and let keyboardist Ellen Reid play lead on a few songs for some reason - though those tracks provide the only bright spots in an otherwise chaotically awful album. No wonder their label dropped them after sharting out miserable musical monstrosities like "I Want Your Goo". Getting into the goo with us is none other than legendary Boston Rock Goddess Mistress Carrie of the Mistress Carrie Podcast and formerly of 107.3 WAAF (rest in peace), who does her best to honor the artistic intent while also eviscerating their bleating boring bullshit. It's a heck of an episode folks, and it's MMM MMM bad. Enjoy!

Deep Dive All Music Books 54: "LoudMouth" with Robert Duncan May 26, 2021
    Show notes

Author Robert Duncan was barely out of his teens when he started writing for the influential music magazine Creem, becoming its managing editor at 22. He worked alongside legendary rock critic Lester Bangs, witnessed his tragic spiral, and finally discovered him dead of an OD in the apartment next door. He went on to write for Rolling Stone, Circus, Life, and dozens of other publications, interviewing hundreds of rock stars at the top of their game.

These experiences, and many others, provide the fuel for his debut novel, Loud Mouth, a rock ‘n’ roll coming-of-age novel about sex, drugs, attempted murder, successful arson, love, hate, faith, fraud, family, Springsteen, Clash, Stones, Creem magazine, Lester Bangs, the Seventies, New York, Detroit, Memphis & buck teeth. Duncan promises that “Some of it is factual. All of it is true.”

Performance Anxiety: Rabih Gebeile (Mondo Cane, Backbone Party) May 25, 2021
    Show notes

Today we head to France with Rabih Gebeile. We decide to take a walk through the French countryside and no, that’s not a euphemism. So occasionally there will be a bit of wind noise. But Rabih has led a fascinating life, including escaping civil wars. He’s lived all over the world and all of this can be felt and heard in his music. It’s also been influenced by the medical condition his father developed several years ago, called normal pressure hydrocephalus. We discuss how moving so often as a kid has had an effect on him (and me) as we get older. We disagree on French gangster rap, and he ruins my conspiracy theory of 8’s with coincidence. Rabih also talks about how he felt the first time he found a bootleg of his albums. This episode has something for everyone, including birds, angry cows, and overly affecioante dogs. Follow Rabih @mondocane_tv. Get the EP on Bandcamp. Send it to other people! Send this show to other people; rate & review it. We accept coffe at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is up at performanceanx.threadless.com. Get some comfy shoes on and walk with me & Rabih Gebeile on Performance Anxiety on Pantheon Podcasts.
