No Filler: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

By the time 2005 rolled around, the garage rock heavy hitters had already made their mark. The Strokes and Interpol were both working on their 3rd records at this point, and bands that started with "The" were a dime a dozen. Bloc Party put their own stamp on the genre with elements of dance and Brit-rock infused into their sound, and a passion and energy in their delivery that made their debut record Silent Alarm stand out among the crowd.

    2. Like Eating Glass

See Hear 87 - Scott Crawford - Director of "Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine" Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

With the ubiquity of fanzines, blogs and podcasts in the 21st century, anyone can publish their critiques on any form of the arts (including your humble hosts of this very show). For better or worse, we don't have to limit ourselves to the opinions of those who claim to “know better”. There was a time, though, where we'd have to rely on information and analysis about music from the writers at publications like NME, RAM, Juke, Rolling Stone or any number of music magazines.

Welcome to episode 87 of See Hear Podcast.

In 1969 in that most rock and roll of cities Detroit, publisher Barry Kramer and founding editor Tony Reay created Creem magazine. Unlike, the recently founded Rolling Stone which portrayed rock music as a serious artform, Creem was taking the piss out of popular culture – very much in line with counter culture values. It featured writers who would be gain fame and infamy like Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh, Cameron Crowe, Robert Christgau and Greil Marcus among many others who obviously loved the music being created but without being held hostage to its creators. The writers showed no fear no favour in how they wrote about bands. MC5 and Rolling Stones, “Exile On Main Street” received less than favourable reviews to start with, something that seems unfathomable now.

We're proud to welcome to the show, documentarian Scott Crawford to discuss his latest film, “Creem: America's Only Rock and Roll Magazine”. He had access to many of the surviving key players from the magazine's 20 year run and has come up with a fascinating look at how Creem was different from its competitors and why it was so beloved of many musicians. There's a gem of a story involving Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh, a typewriter and a dog. Wanna know more? Tune in.

Our huge thanks to Scott for being such a great conversationalist and for allowing us to spend time with him to talk about a truly interesting part of rock history. We at See Hear highly recommend you watch this film....here's a number of ways you can stream it. (Depending on where you are, you may need a VPN). https://www.creemmovie.com/watch-at-home/

Scott also has a great podcast called Spoke which you can check out here: https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/spoke-scott-crawford-0zTir9pbt-A/

What Difference Does It Make: Gary Kemp INSOLO and in Spandau Ballet Jul 19, 2021
    Show notes

Most of us initially learned about Gary Kemp though his work as the musical architect for the 80s band, Spandau Ballet so naturally we wanted to touch on everything surrounding the band. But first things first, as we launch into a talk about the creation of his cool new album, INSOLO, his work stepping into David Gilmour's spot in Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets and his excellent podcast, Rockonteurs. Gary also gave us a history lesson on all that went into the Blitz Kids club scene in the late 70s to early 80s.

The Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: New Orleans Roots: Back To Bolden Jul 19, 2021
    Show notes

As you'll hear in this week's episode, everyone in New Orleans music, Jazz, as well as other musical forms, owe something (if not everything) to Buddy Bolden. Yes, there was music in The Crescent City before him, but it was the feel and form of the way that he broke and remade music which influences improvisation through today!

Crime in Music 69: I'm Edwin Rist and I Bought a Flute Made of Gold, with Feathers! Jul 17, 2021
    Show notes

Smack it up, flip it, rub it down, oh noooooo, it's episode 69 (hee-hee). Meet a young man with dreams of musical fame and fortune. He grew up in the States, but through hard work and study he earned a spot at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Music as a flautist. While attending Uni for flute playing this exceptional young man had a plan, a grand plan the likes of which hand't been seen outside of a Brad Pitt & George Clooney movie about highly skilled thieves. One night our flautist friend performed at a concert and after the show his adventure began. After a break in and millions of dollars of stolen property had gone un-noticed for weeks, the police finally caught up to our flautist felon and the famous feather he stole. That's right, he stole hundreds of bird bodies. His goal; to tie salmon fishing lures, fly-tying and with the extra money from the underground feather network, he bought himself a gold flute. Plump up your plumage, hang up your hackles and enjoy as we spin the tale of the cat burglar who stole birds.
