Rested & relieved, LC & Bakko get back to basics this week. There is a correction to a past ep. Ordering Taco Bell with an app. Needing proof of vaccination to get into concerts. Bakko gets turned down by Rolling Stone magazine. Dave Mustaine erases David Ellefson. The art of the selfie. See Hear 88: Songwriter Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

So, let's say you're a working songwriter and musician. Life is hard enough as it is (and we're talking pre-Covid) without a couple of divorces, management of a singer with an inferiority complex, keeping an agent inline who's trying to cheat you, and a publisher is HAS cheated you to worry about.

    Unless you're Doc Jenkins.....

Welcome to episode 88 of See Hear.

Bernie, Tim and Maurice gather around to talk about the 1984 film Songwriter starring Willie Nelson (as Doc Jenkins) and Kris Kristofferson (as Blackie Buck). The film looks at the day to day issues of a pair of country singers from Texas who aspire to stardom, but not before the industry takes ITS cut. They decide the industry can just stop cheating them out of their due, and they take some fun steps towards that.

The See Hear crew have some fun talking about the music and filmography of these giants of country music as well as the film and its songs. What did they think? Tune in and find out.

To follow along, you can watch the film on Tubi (but will need a VPN outside of the US). Sssshhhh......

If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens.....

Performance Anxiety: Jimmy Gnecco Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

Jimmy Gnecco joins me for this one. His voice is one of the most powerful instruments I’ve ever heard. But he didn’t start off singing. He started as a BMX racer. He got a sponsorship from TNT bikes but he also got hit by a car. Jimmy describes seeing the power of music as a kid and discovering his own voice in the studio with a Black Sabbath tribute band playing a Motley Crue song.

The story of the band Ours is a fascinating one with so many detours. It starts with a bidding war after the band had played just five shows. But there are a lot of lessons learned in this story, the most important of which is sometimes missed opportunities aren’t bad, just a chance to get the work done the right way. Jimmy describes how the new self-title Ours album brings the band full circle and how pasta saved his voice. Follow the band @oursmusic on Instagram. Look for them on FaceBook. The website is ours.net for merch, tour dates, and more.

Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety is where you can show us some love with a cup of coffee. Now settle in for a rollercoaster ride with Jimmy Gnecco of Ours on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 108: Richard Williams on Laura Nyro + Beach Boys audio interviews Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode — the first we've recorded in our London office for over 18 pandemic months — we persuaded long-time RBP contributor Richard Williams (far left) to make his second appearance on "the show", principally so we could pick his brains on two of his favourite musical subjects. We start with a conversation about Laura Nyro, of whom both he and co-host Barney are besotted devotees (fellow co-hosts Mark & Martin can't get past the voice), then move on to the Beach Boys of 1970's Sunflower & 1971's Surf's Up. Richard is particularly fascinating on the role on the latter masterpiece of manager/co-writer Jack Rieley... and at least Martin likes the Beach Boys!

The BBs discussion provides the perfect cue for three clips from the week's new audio interviews: John Tobler's conversations with Mike Love (1976) & Bruce Johnston (1980), both of which prompt further thoughts on the quintessential California band & the doomed "Brian Wilson Is Back!" campaigns of the mid-'70s. We then segue into the work of a quintessential California writer, Deanne Stillman, and her featured RBP pieces about Surf culture & Tom Wolfe's 1965 Phil Spector profile "The Tycoon of Teen".

After paying our respects to Texan country-folk icon Nanci Griffith – with quotes from interviews conducted with her in 1988 & 2012 — Mark talks us through his favourite new additions to the RBP library, including interviews with John Lennon, Sid Vicious & Nancy Spungen & Madonna producer Pat Leonard, while Barney rounds things off with remarks on a 2007 interview with Raymond "Gilbert" O'Sullivan.

Many thanks to special guest Richard Williams; find his blog at thebluemoment.com.

The Rock's Backpages podcast is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network.

Pieces discussed: Laura Nyro by Richard Williams, Laura Nyro by Ian MacDonald, Laura Nyro by Rob Steen, Mike Love audio, Bruce Johnston audio, Surf culture, Phil Spector, Nanci Griffith by Adam Sweeting, Nanci Griffith by David Burke, Paper Lace, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, Bow Wow Wow, Pat Leonard, Sandy Bull, Hair, John Lennon, Buck Owens and Gilbert O'Sullivan.

No Filler: When Techno Meets Downtempo - Underworld's A Hundred Days Off Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

After a decade of success in the vibrant British electronica and techno scene, Underworld reinvented themselves in 2002 when Rick Smith and Karl Hyde released the dark and beautiful A Hundred Days Off. The record remained true to the duo's dance floor roots with a house and techno backbone, but introduced ambient and downtempo elements to the mix. Add Hyde's dreamy and drone-like vocal delivery, the result is a truly exceptional record that's as energetic as it is hypnotic.

    Tracklist:

    1. Two Months Off
    2. Freur - Doot Doot
    3. Dark And Long
    4. Mo Move
    5. Sola Sistim
    6. Little Speaker
    7. Ballet Lane
