Performance Anxiety: Scott von Ryper (The Black Ryder, The Jesus And Mary Chain) Oct 15, 2021
    Show notes

Back in mid-July, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Scott von Ryper. Scott’s love of music stems from his dad’s passion for big band and family organ lessons as a child. He began playing in a band with his brother at age 11, doing covers. He began playing bass soon after. His first one being made from some wood he found under his house, clothesline wire, and some nails.

Once he got a proper bass, he began playing out, doing the biker bar circuit where fights would break out on the dance floor. After playing with the bands Scarlet and The Morning After Girls, Scott formed The Black Ryder with Aimee Nash. They were immediately asked to open shows for bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Jesus and Mary Chain, which Scott would later join as a touring guitarist. Scott is releasing his first solo album with a mix of songs that have been around for years and new music.

Scott shares so many great stories in this episode! So give him a follow @vonryper on Twitter & Instagram. And pick up his solo debut Dream State Treasure wherever & however you get new music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on the socials, send us some coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanciety. Merch is found at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now let’s welcome Scott von Ryper to the Performance Anxiety family, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

I'm In Love With That Song: Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear The Reaper" Oct 15, 2021
    Show notes

Join us for this Halloween Episode where we take a deep dive into one of the spookiest songs to ever hit the charts. There's a reason why this song has shown up everywhere from TV shows like "Supernatural", to films including "Halloween", the videogame "Ripper"-- its lyrics are even quoted in Steven King's "The Stand": because few songs are able to create a mood as deep and rich as this one. And it features one of the best guitar parts of all time. (And yes, we mention the cowbell.)

Performance Anxiety: Luke Condon (Town Meeting, Long May You Young) Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

This episode gives you two guests in one. The multi-talented Luke Condon joins me. Not only is he a part of the band Town Meeting, he’s a co-host of the Long May You Young podcast. Luke and I discuss his early musical venture into rap and being in a band with his brothers Russ and Babe and hearing his dad play While My Guitar Gently weeps while passing gas on the toilet.

Luke reveals his best and worst live experiences, we create a new genre of music called SKUNK, and we talk a lot about Neil Young. That’s the focus of Luke’s show on the Pantheon Podcast Network called Long May You Young. And in honor of the show, I create a cocktail that Luke and I named...Piss Town. Check out Town Meeting, Luke’s solo album, and the Long May You Young podcast. Follow them on social media @townmeetingband & @LongMayYouYoung. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Songfacts Podcast: "Wrecking Ball" writer Stephan Moccio Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the show we have Stephan Moccio, a pianist and composer who has written some songs you may have heard! We talk about a few of those today, including "A New Day Has Come" by Celine Dion and "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus.

When he isn't creating the beautiful melodies of some of pop's biggest hits, Stephan also writes some of the best piano music I have heard, which he features prominently on his album Lionheart, dropping October 15. Our conversation gets detailed on some of songwriting's finer points. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

No Filler: Loud-Quiet-Loud: How Pixies Ushered In A New Dynamic With Doolittle Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

Piggy-backing off our Talking Heads and Sonic Youth episodes, we explore another trailblazer of the alt-rock post-punk variety. When Pixies released Doolittle in 1989, they carried a confidence into the studio that was missing from their first record. With melodic, simple song structures and Black Francis' sporadic, neurotic outbursts sprinkled throughout the record, they created a new dynamic known as "loud-quiet-loud" that helped paved the way for grunge, and countless other indie alt rock bands that followed in their footsteps.

    Tracklist

    1. Pixies - Debaser
    2. Pixies - I Bleed
    3. Pixies - No 13 Baby
    4. Pixies - There Goes My Gun
    5. Pixies - Gouge Away
