Crime in Music 72: I'm Billy Idol and I Hate Teasing the Yank! Oct 24, 2021
    Show notes

This english punk rocker was raised in New York City, USA. After his sister was born his family moved back across the pond, where he fell in love with the english punk scene. He played guitar for the band Generation X. After the band breaks up, he takes his shot at being a lead singer and with the help of some local musicians, he ditched the glasses, bleached his hair and bought a studded leather jacket.

After several radio hits in America and back in his homeland of England, he started branching out and became one of the most played artists on a brand new television channel, MTV. With the popularity of his music videos, his stardom skyrocketed. He could be scene in movie, tv and live performances around the globe. While on vacation in Thailand, he and his friend Harry Johnson accidentally buy heroin, piss off the President of Cambodia and are forcibly removed by the Thai Army after 3 weeks of drugs, alcohol and prostitutes. Buckle up for the furiously feverous fast paced fun of Billy Idol.

Ditty TV: Billy Bragg Oct 22, 2021
    Show notes

Our guest on the podcast today is renowned singer-songwriter and longtime activist Billy Bragg. Bragg is a quick-witted artist and productive generator of change. He’s been a fearless recording artist and political campaigner for over 30 years, and as of this week, he’s released 10 solo studio albums. The latest of which is titled The Million Things That Never Happened. Declared “the first pandemic blues album of our times,” the record features 12 soulful country rock gems that were produced and recorded at Echo Zoo Studio in Eastbourne, England. And if that’s not enough, Bragg also added best-selling author and musicologist to his resume with the success of his acclaimed 2017 book Roots, Radicals & Rockers – How Skiffle Changed the World. We dig in to all this and a lot more in the next hour, so listen in and enjoy.

Make it Stop: Van Morrison - Latest Record Project Vol. 1 Part 1 (w/ Brandon Vallee) Oct 22, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome Back, Stoppies! We're officially rounding the corner on a whole 100 episodes and 5 seasons of musical masochism, so thank you for your patience in advance for what will likely be a much more relaxed release schedule this time around. As punishment for our tardiness we kick off the "fun" by attempting to tackle cantankerous Celtic crooner Van Morrison's Latest Record Project Volume 1. An album that finds the short statured human neck lamenting the endless persecution he has suffered and continues to suffer at the callous hands of his ex-wife as well as the deep state. For Van the only thing worse than paying alimony and child support is having to wear a mask while you do it, and make no mistake he will let you know exactly how he feels about it, over babby's first 12 bar blues, for about 6 minutes at a time, about 28 times in a row. Your fave, returning guest Brandon Vallee, gets roped in to try to parse which of the two boogeymen Van is railing against on any given track, and now we're worried he'll never talk to us again. A wild night is calling, but don't blame us for what happens when you answer. Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network!

The Real Me: Sara Carreras Oct 21, 2021
    Show notes

The Real Me follows the stories of young songwriters and performers with cancer who found hope, healing and connection through music.

Presented by Teen Cancer America, the national non-profit founded by rock icons Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, “The Real Me” highlights the moving experiences of cancer patients in TCA’s Play It Back program, which matches them with music professionals to write, perform and record fully produced studio versions of their original songs.

    This episode is about Sara!

Sara Carreras is a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist. She grew up in a family of music and has been singing in church since she was 12. Her voice is as clear as a bell...and as Belle’s. Sara plays the guitar, but recently got into keys, bass, and drums. Her favorite genres are Gospel, R & B, and 90s/2000s Pop (she loves N’SYNC). And she will school you on the K-Pop group Red Velvet. Sara is hilarious and loves to entertain. Although cancer took away her energy to practice instruments and listen to music, she grew to love gospel music (Kirk Franklin & Fred Hammond) while in the hospital. Her church recently reopened and she’s back to singing on stage. Sara loves working with the other artists in Play It Back. Play It Back gives her hope that she can live a normal life after cancer and continue to pursue her dream of being a songwriter. Her favorite Play It Back memory was learning about Kenli’s obsession with bananas from a call with Benny Blanco.
