Goldmine: Searching for Jimmy Page Oct 28, 2021
    Show notes

The novel Searching for Jimmy Page by author (and Led Zeppelin fan) Christy Hallberg is the subject of this episode of the Goldmine Podcast. Hallberg discusses the basis for her debut novel and her ongoing love for all things Zeppelin. Certainly, Led Zeppelin fans will dig this novel (read synopsis below), but you don't have to be a Zep fan to enjoy the mystery of the book's story,

Listen to the episode and then you can order the book right now in the Goldmine store HERE.

Synopisis: Narrator Luna Kane is on a grief-fueled mission: find elusive guitar god Jimmy Page and ask if he is her father. Luna packs her bags for the misty mountains and becomes a traveler of both time and space, walking a precarious line between personal growth and self-destruction on her pilgrimage from North Carolina to Page’s home(s) in England. Luna’s quest is as flawed as Quixote’s, yet she ultimately finds the answers–and family–she seeks.

SEARCHING FOR JIMMY PAGE by Christy Alexander Halberg is set in 1988 after the death of Luna’s great-grandfather propels teenage Luna to investigate her mother’s suicide years earlier. The identity of Luna’s father is a mystery. Single mom Claudia won’t say but hints it might be guitar wizard Jimmy Page. But Claudia battles mental illness, often locking herself in her bedroom and blasting the offbeat Zep deep track, “Four Sticks” on her stereo, much to her young daughter’s bewilderment and terror. One day Claudia retreats to her bedroom armed with her father’s old service revolver and doesn’t come out. Hallberg looks at the devastation of mental illness and suicide through the eyes of a child, a young adult, a parent, and even a grandparent, which minimizes some family transgressions while amplifying others.

The Age Old Question: Is It Better To Burn Out Than Fade Away? Oct 27, 2021
    Show notes

This week, Rich and Clint debate one of the epic "age old questions" — is it better to burn out than fade away? In 1979, Neil Young famously sang those words, and Kurt Cobain quoted them in his suicide note. Was Neil right? And what did he really mean? With special guest Jeff Symonds.

No Filler Rewind: Spoon - A Series Of Sneaks Oct 27, 2021
    Show notes

In this early No Filler episode, we kicked off our deep dive into indie rock gods Spoon. We started with A Series of Sneaks, where Spoon still had their feet firmly planted in the alt rock post punk that came before them (think Pixies and Sonic Youth). We chat about how the label's lackluster support for the record jaded the band and how it ultimately helped set the tone for the album that followed, and the band we now know and love.

Ditty TV: James McMurtry Oct 27, 2021
    Show notes

Our guest on the podcast today is acclaimed songwriter and Texas-bred luminary, James McMurtry. James has just released his first full-length studio album in seven years via New West Records. It’s titled The Horses and the Hounds, and today, we get into the making of the record, and other topics that show us just what makes this celebrated tunesmith tick. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth at Jackson Browne’s Groove Masters in Santa Monica, California, a world class studio that’s housed such legends as Bob Dylan, David Crosby, of course Jackson Browne, and now James McMurtry. The author Stephen King wrote that “James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation,” and we think King may be on to something.

See Hear 90: Breaking Glass Oct 27, 2021
    Show notes

Music must change. It always has and always will. The common story (probably part truth and myth) is that punk emerged in the UK as a reaction to the so-called “dinosaur” bands...the ones that had been around for a whole 10 or so years (we'd laugh at that notion now....). Bands that were bloated on their success and measured that success on excess...the supposed antithesis of the early days of popular music. Punk burned brightly, but quickly gave way to the “new wave” of British bands. A large umbrella for many bands who often had little in common.

Welcome to episode 90 of See Hear Podcast.

Tim is absent for this episode for the most wonderful reason...he's getting married on Halloween to his fiance' Maria (Bernie and I love you both). We invited long time friend and host of The Projection Booth, Mike White, to help round out the trio. Mike selected this month's film, Breaking Glass released in 1980. Starring Hazel O' Connor, it's set in Thatcher's England and tells the story of a singer who just wants her music to be heard. At that time, artists of the British new wave were exploding (not in the Spinal Taps' drummers sense...) in popularity. O' Connor plays Kate who is part of this musical dawn, but has to fight crooked music publishers, radio station apathy, the National Front and eventually, her own success. It's an oft repeated story, yet still has a vitality set in this musical and historically troubled period.

The film is available on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR5BXDqO_CQ

Our gratitude goes out to Mike for joining us again. You can (and really should) subscribe to The Projection Booth wherever you download your shows or at the website https://www.projectionboothpodcast.com/

Prisoners of Rock and Roll 28: The Life and Music of Bob Marley Oct 27, 2021
    Show notes

Bob Marley was more than just a musician. He was a musical pioneer. An ambassador of Jamaican culture. A humanitarian, an activist, and a really competitive soccer player. He grew up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Kingstown, Jamaica, but thought music could change the world. His songs talk about standing up to oppression, hope, freedom, politics, and love. He survived an assassination attempt and then tragically died of cancer at just 36 years old.

One today’s episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re going to explore the life and music of the man who wove reggae music into the fabric of modern music.
