Performance Anxiety: Lyle Hysen (The Royal Arctic Institute, Das Damen) Feb 24, 2022
    Show notes

Lyle Hysen’s career in music has been different from most. And as the drummer for the grammatically incorrect Das Damen, he schlepped his drums across the States and Europe. He toured with Screaming Trees and Nirvana before grunge took over the world. The band even toured as Arthur Lee’s backing band for a time. But Lyle’s career would take a left turn when he accidentally started a niche market licensing music for small, indie bands through Rough Trade’s publishing company. That eventually led to the formation of Bank Robber music, where he’s helped so many bands stay in the business through the licensing and publishing side of music.

But he wasn’t quite done making music. He’s a foundational member of The Royal Arctic Institute. Sounds fancy, I know. But they write some beautiful instrumentals. You have to check out their music, especially if you like cassettes, since that’s the only physical copy you’re going to get. Follow the band @theroyalai on IG, @royal_arctic on Twitter, The Royal Arctic Institute on FB. Pick up the album on Bandcamp or wherever you get music. We would love a review, a follow, stuff like that. We’re @PerformanceAnx on the socials. Get stuff at performanceanx.threadless.com. You can help support the show like our good friend Sandy Olivia at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. So do a few jaw exercises because I couldn’t stop laughing on this one. Welcome Lyle Hysen from The Royal Arctic Institute on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Decibel Geek 468: The Best & Worst of 70's Cheap Trick Feb 24, 2022
    Show notes

This week we welcome good friend, podcaster, and author Brian J. Kramp to discuss The Best & Worst of 70's Cheap Trick! In addition to his hosting duties of the awesome Rock and/or Roll Podcast, Brian's got an awesome new book coming out this Summer based on the early days of Cheap Trick!

This Band Has No Past tells the story of a bar band from the Midwest—the best and weirdest bar band in the Midwest—and how these four baby boomers, having been lucky enough to avoid the Vietnam draft, doggedly pursued a most unlikely career in rock’n’roll and made it on their own terms. It traces every gnarly limb of the family tree of bands that culminated in Cheap Trick, then details how this unlikely foursome paid their dues—with interest—night after night, slogging it out everywhere from high schools to bars to bowling alleys to fans’ back yards, before signing to Epic Records and releasing two brilliant albums six months apart.

Drawing on more than eighty original interviews, This Band Has No Past is packed full of new insights and information that fans of the band will devour. How was the Cheap Trick logo created? How did the checkerboard pattern come to be associated with the band? When did Rick Nielsen start wearing a ballcap 24/7? Who caught their mom and dad rolling on the couch? Read on and find out. The book is set for release June 21, 2022 and we can't wait to get it!

In this episode, the guys each share their favorite and least favorite songs from Cheap Trick's 70's output. This episode covers the self-titled debut, In Color, Heaven Tonight, and Dream Police as well as the landmark Cheap Trick at Budokan release. There are some definite differences in taste among the guys in this episode and it makes for an interesting discussion.

What are your Best & Worst of 70's Cheap Trick picks? Let us know in the comments below! Be sure to pre-order your copy of This Band Has No Past by Brian J. Kramp at https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1911036874/creativepubco-20

Rock's Backpages 121: Peter Guralnick on Blues + Southern Soul + Jerry Wexler Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode we invite the great Peter Guralnick — Zooming in from his native Massachusetts — to discuss his "adventures in music and writing"… to quote the subtitle of his wonderful 2020 collection Looking to Get Lost.

Peter takes his hosts back to his discovery of Delta blues giants Skip James and Robert Johnson in the early '60s — and to the first pieces he wrote for Paul Williams' Crawdaddy! in 1966. He explains his approach to the masterful profiles he collected in Feel Like Going Home and Lost Highway, and the friendships with Charlie Rich and Bobby "Blue" Bland that resulted from them. Conversation leads from Howlin' Wolf to Solomon Burke and southern soul, and from there to the use of Val Wilmer's remarkable photos in Peter's books.

Talk of Memphis and Muscle Shoals prompts Mark to introduce the first of three clips from Barney's 1985 audio interview with Atlantic Records legend Jerry Wexler. Peter reminisces about his relationship with "Wex" (and with Ray Charles), then follows up with riveting recall of Joe Tex and Jerry Lee Lewis. Pieces by Memphis writer Andria Lisle — one of many Guralnick disciples — brings us on to discussion of Bobby Bland and the late Hi Rhythm section drummer Howard Grimes. We also remember the brilliant Betty Davis and Syl ('Is It Because I'm Black?') Johnson.

Finally, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about John Lee Hooker, Nik Venet, the Nazz and Simon Napier-Bell, while Jasper notes articles about Norah Jones and Robert Glasper. Bringing things full circle, Barney quotes from Peter's friend Bill Millar's tribute to recently-deceased soul specialist Bob Fisher.

Many thanks to special guest Peter Guralnick. Looking to Get Lost is published by Little, Brown, and you can visit his website at peterguralnick.com.

Peter Guralnick interviewed by Bob Ruggiero and by Maud Barthomier, Sweet Soul Music, Jerry Wexler audio, Andria Lisle on Memphis, Mick Hucknall meets Bobby "Blue" Bland, Hi Rhythm, Betty Davis, Syl Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Nik Venet, The Nazz, CBGBs, Hoagy Carmichael, Simon Napier-Bell, 'River Deep, Mountain High', Stephanie Mills, Norah Jones, Robert Glasper and Bob Fisher.

Let It Roll: The Cultural Blend That Made New Orleans Music Unique Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

Sublette's book is "a tale of imperial war, religious conflict, the search for treasure, the spread of slavery, the Cuban connection, the cruel aristocracy of sugar, and the very different revolutions that created the United States and Haiti" culminating in the magical drum music of Congo Square, sounds that echo on today via Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll, Funk and Hip-Hop.

No Filler: And We Were So Small - The Music of Polaris Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

With Miracle Legion's future in limbo after legal troubles with their label at the time, Mark Mulcahy came up with a new name for the group (and alter egos for each band member) when they were approached by Will McRobb to write songs and appear in his upcoming Nickelodeon project. The show was of course The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Not only did they appear in the opening credits and write the theme song for the show, Polaris also played a heavy role in an episode all about discovering your favorite song at a young age. We talk about what an amazing television network Nickelodeon was and hour fortunate we feel to grow up in the 90s, and how Polaris and the music of Pete and Pete played a big role in shaping our taste in music.

Prisoners of Rock and Roll 35: The Faces of David Bowie Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

David Bowie defied every category society tried to put him in. He constantly experimented with new sounds in his music and releasing albums that were glam, proto punk, industrial, and plastic soul. He blurred the lines of gender, fashion, and sexuality. He also combined theater and music by inventing characters that he played on stage and in his music.

In this week’s episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re going to take a look at the faces of David Bowie including Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, Halloween Jack, The Thin White Duke, and the Blind Prophet from his final album, Blackstar.
