    Show notes

In this Encore Episode, Rob Janicke (Generation Riff, Abandoned Albums) recalls the shift from 80s metal to 90s alt-rock. Although it's often depicted as a cultural light switch, Janicke explains how grunge was already fading when it began to dominate. In this interview, he also recalls seeing some of the 90s legendary rock bands in small New York clubs. Plus, Janicke shares his story of growing old with his favorite group, Pearl Jam.

AllMusicPodcast 112: "Go All The Way" and "Go Further" with Paul Myers Apr 26, 2022
    Show notes

Power poppers are passionate fans. Verrry passionate. Who was the first power pop band? Who’s the best? What’s the definitive power pop album and single? It depends on who you ask, but be careful; everyone is going to have an opinion and will back it up!

Go All The Way: A Literary Appreciation for Power Pop is a brilliant exploration of this notion, and features many astounding writers, writing…well…passionately. Since we interviewed S.W. Lauden, we thought it would be fun to Go Further, and also speak with his co-author Paul Myers and get his thoughts and, yes, opinions on some of the things we spoke about previously. Power pop has meant many things to many people; here’s Paul Myers take.

Shout It Out Loudcast: "Paul Stanley Vs Radio Chick" Apr 26, 2022
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus breakdown the infamous Paul Stanley 2007 radio interview with NYC Radio Host, Leslie Gold better known as "The Radio Chick."

The guys play the YouTube clip which was an interview of Paul by The Radio Chick who was on to promote his art work at the Wentworth Gallery. The interview starts off as a disaster and does NOT get any better. This is a fascinating look at what happens when you get Paul angry.

The guys dissect this interview SIOL style and have a blast doing so as you will see. Another original episode with tons of opinions, laughs and a diagnosis by Criminal Minds expert, Tom!

BTW, if you bring KISS coffee you know where you can put it.

Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: The Sex Pistols Apr 25, 2022
    Show notes

Punk Rock Month '22 wraps up with a new, completely gobby episode all about the one and only, Sex Pistols! The Imbalanced Brothers always mock Johnny Rotten, but it's done lovingly (sic), most of the time! He, along with Steve, Glen, Cookie, and, of course, Sid combined forces for one big noise, but the aftershocks lasted for years!

Like a massive Punk tsunami, the Pistols' shadow covers a lot of bands, and sounds, which came after their noisy, f*cked up arrival! And props must be given to their Svengali, Malcolm McLaren, who is a huge part of this week's story.

What a great episode to wrap up the second edition of Punk Rock Month, with ideas for '23 already poppin' up!

Ska Boom: 2 Tone Legacy - Celebrate the Bullet Apr 25, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to 2 Tone Legacy a special 10-part audio documentary series of the Ska Boom podcast that focuses on the stories behind the songs that contribute to the enduring legacy of 2 Tone music and its ongoing impact on popular culture. In each episode, I'll be joined by Paul Williams, author of "You're Wondering Now: The Specials from Conception to Reunion" and lead singer of UK 2-Tone band The Skapones. Paul is a noted 2 Tone expert and he'll be sharing his memories and insights on all the songs covered in this series.

If pressed to name my favorite album and song of the entire 2-Tone era I would have to say "Celebrate The Bullet" by The Selecter. Surprised? You shouldn't be. In my humble opinion "Celebrate The Bullet" broke the mold and remains the most creative and unique collection of songs to come out of the entire 2-Tone era. The Selecter created a haunting, bluesy iteration of ska that to my knowledge has never been attempted before or since. For that reason, it is a very unique record and it goes against the grain of what 2-Tone fans probably expected when it was released.

Notably, it was also one of the few songs to address guns and gun violence in a direct and confrontational way that was sadly misunderstood when it was released around the gun death of John Lennon in December 1980 and the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan in March 1981.

Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George and appears on Pantheon Podcasts. Ska Boom is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon.
