The Hook Rocks: The Journey Legacy Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

Journey is a band that is often overlooked by rock fans when it comes to identifying music that defined a generation. Armed with great songs and an identifiable sound the band is one of the reasons '80s hard rock rose from the ashes after the era of disco. With radio hits with an edge Journey helped make rock mainstream. Sonny Pooni returns to The Hook Rocks to talk their music, songs, and their legacy. Please enjoy the episode.

The Ugly American Werewolf in London 74: Sting Live in London & The Cult Live in Orlando Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

Over the last 2 years live music has been absent from our lives and it's been hard. With COVID restrictions lifting, bands are getting back out on the road and we're as psyched as anyone for that. The Wolf held his Sting tickets for over 2 years before finally being able to see him at the London Palladium where he delivered a classic performance. Action Jackson caught his favorite hard rock band of all time, The Cult, in Florida with some dedicated Cult fans. We have 5 new pre-show questions & 5 new post-show questions for all our concerts and we ask them of each other as we relish being able to see our heroes live again!

Long May You Young 74: Hitchhiker Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

The jury is in: This is one hell of an album. Almost every review we found, and everyone we asked seems to have the same feeling - this is raw Neil doing what he does best and doing the hell out of it. Recorded in 76 but not released until 2017, this stripped down collection is some of the finest Neil we've heard. We geek out for quite a while on it.

Mike unfortunately had a family situation and had to bail last minute, but thanks to our top tier Patrons John Locke and Craig Bitch - we had a hell of a time!

For real though - top ten Neil album. At least in my (Luke's) opinion.

Songfacts Podcast: Lester Chambers of The Chambers Brothers, Moonalice Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

Even by the lofty standards of the late '60s, The Chambers Brothers were visionaries, blending rock, gospel and psychedelia into a musical bouillabaisse seasoned with social awareness. Lester is the third of the four Brothers, who were joined by a white drummer named Brian Keenan.

The Chambers family is from Mississippi, but they formed their band in Los Angeles after the oldest brother, George, was discharged from the Army and settled there. "He went to California because he no longer wanted his brothers and sisters to grow up in a place like Mississippi," Lester says. "We got in the car one night and drove up. And, after two-and-a-half to three days we wound up in California, but it was a struggle getting out of Mississippi on the road."

They started performing in 1961 and added Keenan in 1965, the year they earned great acclaim with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where they went electric hours before Bob Dylan. Their first album, The Time Has Come, was released in 1967 and includes their masterpiece "Time Has Come Today," a song that still rings true five decades later. That album also includes "Uptown," a song you can see the band perform in the documentary Summer Of Soul.

We touch on all these topics in this conversation with Lester, who also talks about his latest venture, the band Moonalice.

Performance Anxiety: Mark Stewart (The Pop Group, Mark Stewart & The Maffia) Apr 28, 2022
    Show notes

If you’ve checked out this podcast more than once, you may have noticed that I like to listen to a lot of different styles of music. And I also like to discover styles that I’ve never heard before. That’s the case this week with my guest Mark Stewart. From the experimental sounds of The Pop Group to the dub sounds of The New Age Steppers and Mark Stewart & The Maffia, I went down a very deep rabbit hole. It was actually a little intimidating knowing that Mark has such a discography and I was not familiar with the majority of it. But as as soon as we connected, we were laughing our asses off.

We bond over Romanian Gypsy Music, swap Guns & Roses stories, and lament the loss of Mark Lanegan. At one point, Mark starts to interview me! He talks about forming The Pop Group and getting support slots for Pere Ubu and Patti Smith and then having to go back to school to finish exams. Mark also reveals the connection between The Pop Group and The Simpsons.

Mark’s latest album is a throwdown, of sorts; kind of a musical steel cage death match with collaborations featuring KK Null, Ye Gods, Lee Scratch Perry, & many more. Grab the album, follow Mark on Facebook and on Twitter @_markstewart. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Rate and review. Five stars would be nice. Help support the show with a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Check out the other shows on the Pantheon Podcast Network and lets dub step into the one and only Mark Stewart on Performance Anxiety.

The vocalist and keyboardist for Edge Of Paradise loves to explore metaphysical and sci-fi concepts in the band's music. She also brings them into her work as a painter, and for this episode she discusses that artistic process and how it ties into her musical life.
