    Pain Reframed

    Pain Reframed is a podcast for physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapy assistants and other health care providers about pain and how pain is managed in our society. Pain is a large issue right now and we will bring powerful and helpful insights on how we can manage pain in a much more efficient and effective way. Pain Reframed is committed to changing language and practice patterns across disciplines and points of care in order to reduce the unnecessary suffering that results from the propagation of misinformation, insufficient understanding of the pain experience, and the over-medicalization of pain in society. Dr. Tim Flynn and Dr. Jeff Moore will share their expertise, as well as the expertise from others in the medical and psychological fields, about pain management and our roles in dealing with pain. We want to create a sustainable, multi-disciplinary, international conversation on pain.

    28: We Have Ignored the Pain Psychology of Patients | Dr. Beth Darnall Oct 05, 2017

    This week, on Pain Reframed, Dr. Tim Flynn and Dr. Jeff Moore are joined by Dr. Beth Darnall, who is a pain psychologist, clinical scientist, and Clinical Professor at Stanford University. Beth has a focus on pain catastrophizing as well as treating some of the key issues that prevent patients from succeeding with other pain treatments.

    Clinically, Beth provides psychological services to patients with catastrophic burn, spinal cord injury or amputation. Her desire to specialize in the management of chronic pain was inspired by her clinical experiences and by her own personal experience with chronic pain. Beth brings a wealth of knowledge to the episode as they discuss some key aspects to managing patients with chronic pain as well as altering systems to maximize positive treatment effects.

    Don't forget to save the date: June 8-10, 2018 in Denver, Colorado, the Align Conference will be taking place, focusing on neuropathic (nerve) pain. All of the various concepts of calming the nerves down will be covered at this conference.

    This week, on Pain Reframed, Dr. Tim Flynn and Dr. Jeff Moore, once again, reunite with Dr. Adriaan Louw, co-founder and CEO of the International Spine and Pain Institute! We will be diving into the topic of neuroplasticity and how it relates to the management of patients with persistent pain.

    Adriaan, Tim, and Jeff discuss what neuroplasticity is, what is going on, neurologically, with the patient when dealing with persistent pain, and some really cool and new evidence-based practices that are currently going on, and in the works, for dealing with neuroplasticity and persistent pain!

Rachna started off as an emergency room physician and moved into the area of medical marijuana to, specifically, help patients with chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia. Rachna brings a cool perspective of walking with patients through the choices they make and empower them to decrease their use of prescription drugs and get them back living and exercising again.

One theme he discusses in the episode is that an abundance of fear and a lack of proper movement really drives most of the problem of chronic pain. It's a simple solution. David is an orthopedic surgeon and has an incredible story on how he found success with his own experience of pain. As a result, David has some amazing and effective strategies that he developed and uses with his patients. David is the author of the book "Back in Control."

    David will discuss with Jeff and Tim safe and effective alternatives to surgical management. David will share a successful model you can follow in your practice to put surgery in the appropriate point of the care pathway, still using surgery responsibly, but also using an evidence-based paradigm to get to that point correctly.
