    Show notes

Pat Spencer: From Tewaaraton winner to NBA prospect?

The phrase in itself seems farfetched, but with each day, Spencer pushes closer to making it a reality. The former Loyola men’s lacrosse star decided to spend a fifth year playing basketball at Northwestern, a school competing in the top league in all of college basketball.

After a successful 2019 season in which he led the Wildcats in assists, Spencer had a decision to make. Would he pursue a career in professional lacrosse — where he’d surely be one of the best players in the world — or make a career playing his favorite sport, basketball?

Last week, Spencer signed with Tandem, an agency aimed at getting players exposure to the NBA. For now, Spencer, the two-sport star, will try to make his childhood dreams come true. He spoke with Paul Carcaterra about his multi-sport upbringing, following his passion at Northwestern and why he’ll always have love for the lacrosse community.

    Andy Towers S3 | E13 May 12, 2020
    Show notes

Andy Towers is a blue-collar guy, despite how many viewed him as he grew into a star lacrosse player. He made his name known at Brown, before being kicked out during his junior year.

During a pivotal point in his life, Towers did some soul searching while coaching at Denison. He returned to Brown and launched a successful pro lacrosse career before joining the college coaching ranks.

Decades later, the Chaos Lacrosse Club coach reflected on a few decisions that changed the course of his life. He sat down with Paul Carcaterra to talk about his career and what’s next.

    Tom Schreiber S3 | E12 May 05, 2020
    Show notes

Tom Schreiber is one of the best players in the world, but he’s still looking to improve. Schreiber, the quiet Long Island native, has emerged as a star in both the PLL and the NLL, in addition to scoring the game-winning goal to help the U.S. national team win gold in 2018.

He’s 28, but he already has a resume better than most to ever play the game. He followed his father, Doug, who was a Hall of Famer and helped motivate Tom to become who he is today.

Schreiber, currently training on his own during the COVID-19 crisis, spoke with Paul Carcaterra about his Princeton days, his transition to box and how long he plans to stay in the game.

    Cathy Reese S3 | E11 Apr 28, 2020
    Show notes

Cathy Reese is one of the sport’s most decorated coaches, and often appears to be one of most relaxed with her team. She’s built a dynasty as head coach at College Park to the tune of five national championships and is still as motivated as she was when she took over for Cindy Timchal in 2007.

Reese embraces the individuality of each of her players, allowing them to take chance and have fun while chasing NCAA titles. It’s how she enjoyed her college experience, winning four straight national championships with Maryland.

Now, she’s missing the interaction with her players at College Park. She spoke with Paul Carcaterra about her coaching philosophy, how her husband inspires her as she continues her career and why she’s so proud to be a mother.

    Dave Pietramala S3 | E10 Apr 21, 2020
    Show notes

Dave Pietramala was Johns Hopkins lacrosse.

Pietramala became one of the best defensemen in the sport’s history while at Homewood Field in the late 1980s, winning the 1987 NCAA title. He learned plenty about himself during that time, and cherished the people he met at Johns Hopkins. Years later, he joined as head coach of the Blue Jays.

And just like he did as a player, Pietramala made his mark for 20 seasons at the helm of the Johns Hopkins program. Last week, he mutually agreed to part ways after two national championships.

For Pietramala, it’s a new era, and one he hopes doesn’t last long. He hopes to coach again soon. He shares his reaction to the past week with Paul Carcaterra.

    Gary Gait | S3 E9 Apr 14, 2020
    Show notes

Gary Gait is often regarded as the greatest lacrosse player in the sport’s history. The acclaim isn’t unwarranted — Gait revolutionized the game during his time with Syracuse and in Major League Lacrosse.

Now the coach of the Syracuse women’s lacrosse program, Gait still has the same fire he used to win national and professional titles. But he’s focused now on having the same success at his alma mater. The grind never stops for one of the legends of the game.

Gait joined fellow Syracuse star Paul Carcaterra in a unique discussion about his lacrosse beginnings, the transition to field lacrosse with the Orange and why coach Roy Simmons Jr. had such a big impact on his life.

    John Tillman | S3 E8 Apr 07, 2020
    Show notes

John Tillman has been busy building the Maryland men’s lacrosse program into one of the most dominant in all of college lacrosse, but he won’t forget his roots.

Tillman, who grew up in Corning, N.Y., learned the value of toughness from his older brothers. He brought that mentality to the sport of lacrosse, where he used his tactical skill to make-up for differences in physicality. Tillman eventually took his talents to Cornell, where he competed with greats like Paul Schimoler.

After his Big Red career, Tillman quickly figured out he had a passion for coaching. From Ithaca to Navy, Harvard and now at Maryland, he has dedicated himself to his players and has reaped the benefits. He’s made seven of the last 10 final fours with Maryland, and he wants to keep learning.

Tillman talks with Paul Carcaterra about his beginning in the game, and what he’s doing now that the sport has been put on pause.

    Michelle Tumolo | S3 E7 Mar 31, 2020
    Show notes

Michelle Tumolo has become one of the biggest stars in women’s lacrosse with her unique style and flashy skills.

She picked up the game in high school and quickly found role models in Gary Gait, Katrina Dowd and others from the Northwestern dynasty. She wanted to stand out on the lacrosse field and make an impact.

Consider that goal accomplished. The 2017 U.S. national team gold medalist has become one of the biggest role models in the sport, both on and off the field. She’s helped inject a level of fun to the game, not unlike Dowd, and she’s helping girls who, like herself, are gay lacrosse players.

Tumolo spoke with Paul Carcaterra about her beginnings in the game, how she got into coaching at Wagner and why she feels the need to give back to girls who look up to her.

    Grant Ament | S3 E6 Mar 24, 2020
    Show notes

Grant Ament’s historic career abruptly ended just weeks ago. Just yesterday, he announced that, despite an NCAA announcement that he may be able to pursue an extra year, he was moving on from Penn State.

Ament’s final season may go unremembered, but his legacy in NCAA lacrosse will continue for decades. He’s the NCAA’s single-season leader with 96 assists in 2019, and he’s the Big Ten’s career leader in assists. His ability to find open shooters has set him apart from almost any other player in the history of college lacrosse.

But there’s more to Ament than his on-field abilities. He spoke with Paul Carcaterra about his Penn State upbringing, his feelings on the canceled season and why he’s moving on to pro lacrosse.

    Anish Shroff | S3 E5 Mar 17, 2020
    Show notes

The lacrosse community was dealt a blow last week with the cancelation of the NCAA season. It was an unprecedented move and one that influenced not only the players and coaches, but those who love the sport at large.

Anish Shroff certainly qualifies. As ESPN’s lead play-by-play lacrosse announcer, he made his career out of sharing his passion for the game. Shroff, a Syracuse grad, joined his good friend Paul Carcaterra on Overtime.

Together, they share their thoughts on the lost season and what we all can look to for optimism.
